Task: Research Paper 
● Your task is to write a formal research paper on the topic of your choice.  
● You will synthesize the research you have compiled to support your ideas and 
document that research using citations.  
● You will also include graphs or charts that you create, which supplement your 
research.  
● You will use the appropriate format (font, font size, spacing, indentation size) 
when submitting the final product. 
 
Think:  

Communication​ is the key concept for this unit. Why might I have selected it for this 
unit? (this might might be important when thinking of your audience) 

Communication might have been selected as the key concept for this unit since we 
have to communicate effectively to the audience. They should be able to 
understand what we are trying to talk about throughout the research paper. 
Therefore, we have to use a sense of language and communicate in a way that are 
appropriate for the audience.  
 

What does a formal research paper look like? 

A formal research paper consists of an introduction (thesis statement and attention 


grabber), multiple body paragraphs and a conclusion.  

Structure​ and ​purpose​ are the related concepts I have selected. Why might they be 
of particular importance for this style of writing? 

Structure and purpose might particularly important since we have to follow the 
structure of a research paper by following an introduction with strong thesis, 
multiple body paragraphs and a conclusion and the ideas should build on each 
other so that readers can better understand. Purpose are also important since we

have to know the audience of the paper to communicate effectively.  

You have been given the opportunity to select your own Global Context for this. 
Which have you selected, justify why. 

For my global context, I have selected Identities and Relationships. This is because 
my topic fits the subheading, “people, boundaries, exchange and interaction” since 
people interact with the place, Iceland for my paper over boundaries and borders 
from their own country. By this, people exchange their cultures and traditions. My 
topic also fits the subheading, “natural and human landscape and resources” since 
Iceland is famous for their landscapes, such as glaciers and volcanoes and these 
often becomes tourist attractions. I will be looking at the change of tourism over 
time and how humans have impacted the nature.  

If you could choose just two ​ATL Skills​ to help you with your summative task, which 
would they be? Justify why.  
 
If I could choose just two ATL Skills, it would be communication, because as 
mentioned in the previous question, it is important to communicate effectively to the 
audience. They should be able to understand what we are trying to talk about 
throughout the research paper. Therefore, we have to use a sense of language and 
communicate in a way that are appropriate for the audience.  

I would also choose research, especially information literacy since we have to 
collect, record and verify data and analyze these data. We also have to collect 
information from the research and present the information using a research paper.

Summative #1:​ You will follow the structure of a research paper by including a strong thesis 
statement, an introduction paragraph, multiple body paragraphs and a conclusion 
paragraph. You will effectively use transitions and follow appropriate formatting. You will

properly format the essay following APA guidelines for a Reference List and in-text citations.

Overall, I think I should get a 7 for this 
assessment for Criterion B.
