WHY OSPEK SHOULD BE ELIMINATED

OSPEK (Orientasi Studi Dan Pengenalan Kampus) is an initial activity for every new
student who took the college level. OSPEK aims to introduce the university environment to new
students such as the introduction of how universities work, the use of facilities and infrastructure,
and understanding of the rules and regulations on campus. Furthermore, OSPEK also aims to make
new students get to know each other from different regions. However, OSPEK activities in
Indonesia are often filled with verbal violence and even rarely physical violence (Permana, 2013).
As though the participants of OSPEK often wearing unreasonable and humiliating clothes and or
ornaments. Moreover, participants have to receive physical punishment from senior even in some
cases it leads to death. After that Should OSPEK be eliminated ?.
OSPEK has many problems and bad judgment on the Society because the reporting of the
students who died just because of following OSPEK activities and lack of supervision by the
University Administration. But that is not without cause, OSPEK into hereditary cultures to be
done “inhumanely” (I will call it Broken OSPEK). One of the reasons is the form of revenge what
the seniors did because they were treated like that before. Broken OSPEK affects participant’s
physical and mental health because of the pressure of Broken OSPEK.
However, OSPEK had severals positive outcome like uniting a group of people who don’t
know each other. Solidarity in one batch is very necessary when someone had a problem with their
academic, mental health, economic or anything he/she can ask help without any doubt because
they bonding. Furthermore, OSPEK makes Participants have a big picture how college life is (if
it’s done well and correctly). For example, Based on Zenius Blog new students NTU Singapore
they are given the task every day should make 30 people happy, very cute isn’t it?.
Although to be fair OSPEK have the good effect. But in the field due to the bad is mostly
Because of cultural factors, seniority, and misconceptions in mental health. even the media that
always Seek for negative things from OSPEK exacerbate the bad perception of society.
However, OSPEK remains to exist in Indonesia to introduce how campus life is. but in a
better polite way, and no side effects like NTU in Singapore. the government should also keep a
closer eye on OSPEK to make Indonesia's education healthier.
