Answer:
DriveMonitor is a useful tool for digitally exchanging parameters and diagnosis data with the
6RA70. The interface is one of the serial basic unit interfaces of the 6RA70 with
communication in accordance with the USS protocol. To use DriveMonitor in conjunction with
Profibus, you need the optional software package Drive ES Basic.
DriveMonitor is supplied with the 6RA70 on a CD. Alternatively, you can download it from the
Internet.
Address: http://support.automation.siemens.com/WW/view/de/10804984/133100
The following sections explain just some of the many DriveMonitor functions enabling you to
save device parameters and carry out diagnoses using the trace function. Our Technical
Support team can help you with the analysis (for contact details, see section 14.1 in the
operating instructions. Please e-mail a complete parameter upload (.dnl) along with your
trace 1 and trace 2 files (.trc) (always read and save trace 1 and trace 2).
Procedure:
A) Install DriveMonitor with "install.bat" from the CD supplied. If an older version is
installed on your computer, you must de-install this first.
B) Launch DriveMonitor via the icon on your desktop.
C) Choose "File" - "Open..." (to open an existing parameter file .dnl) or
"File" - "New" - "Based on Factory Setting…" (recommended setting).
The following screen is then displayed:
1
Unit type: "SIMOREG DC
MASTER"
You can use the "Save As" screen that is then displayed to save the factory settings file.
Confirm that you want to overwrite the file or save it under a new name.
In the following descriptions, the menu names are highlighted in blue (e.g. "File").
The "View" menu allows you to display or hide the "Toolbar", "Drive Navigator bar",
"Parameter view", and "Status bar".

"View" menu:
"Offline": work without a connection to the device. You can use this menu to display and
change parameters in the current file ("Parameters" – "Parameter List").
"Online (Write RAM)": When you go online, a connection with the device is established and
you can change the parameters in the RAM. The RAM is a volatile memory, which means
that any changes you make to parameters online are not saved when the electronics power
supply for the 6RA70 is switched off. When the electronics power supply is switched on
again, the values stored in the EEPROM are copied to the RAM and used. For this reason,
this setting is only used when parameters are frequently overwritten or when the original
parameter settings in the EEPROM are not to be overwritten.
"Online (Write EEPROM)": recommended setting. Parameters transferred to the device are
saved in a non-volatile memory.
3
"Download [Save EEPROM]": Write the parameter file to the device and save it in EEPROM
(non-volatile). This setting must be made if the parameters for a defective device are to be
transferred to a replacement, for example.
"Print": You generally only need to choose "Changes only..." here, that is, print out the values
that differ from the factory settings.
"Drive Properties": You can change the bus address here so that you can select different
devices on one RS485 bus, for example.
"Compare to...": This option allows you to compare parameters with each other and display
the result of the selected comparison condition. This is normally "<>" (not equal to), which
means that only those parameters that differ from each other are displayed. See the
following screenshot.

3) The Trace Function:
The 6RA70 features a trace memory. You can use this function via DriveMonitor.
The trace function is an important tool that helps you diagnose special problems with the
drive. The Technical Support team can help you analyze the traces (for contact details, see
section 14.1 in the operating instructions). Please e-mail a complete parameter upload (.dnl)
along with your trace 1 and trace 2 files (.trc) (always read and save trace 1 and trace 2).
Short description: with trace 1, you can record up to 10 curves (any connectors) in the same
way as with a storage oscilloscope. A user-friendly trigger can be used to start the trace. If
you set the pre-trigger, the events leading up to and following the trigger are recorded.
With trace 1, 400 measuring points are recorded for each curve. The time between two
measuring points is defined by the trace interval (factor 1 to 99) with respect to the time
between two trigger pulses (e.g. 3.333 ms at 50 Hz). Two options are available under
"Settings" – "Start": activate and transfer once and activate and transfer continuously.
With trace 2, 6 curves are measured via the A/D converter and recorded with 800 measuring
points for each curve. The sampling interval between two measuring points is set
permanently to 250 µs. The time characteristic of the armature current, armature voltage,
and the line voltages (armature and field), therefore, are recorded. The filtered values are
measured (curves 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10), while the remaining curves are values calculated for
the signals before a 0.42 ms hardware filter. The total trace interval of trace 2 is 200 ms. The
assignments of the recorded signals cannot be changed. Trace 1 and trace 2 are timed so
that they finish at the same time. The trigger, pretrigger, and trace interval of trace 1
determine the timeframe of trace 2.
You do not necessarily need a PC to parameterize and activate the trace as this can also be
carried out via an operator panel (e.g. the PMU). A PC is required, however, if you want to
read the data at a later stage. Below is a description of the trace parameters. You can enter
these via the PMU, OP1S or DriveMonitor, for example. When you parameterize the trace via
"Settings...", these parameters are set automatically.
Note: when you switch off the electronics power supply for the 6RA70 or the power supply
fails, the measured values and the trigger status stored in the device are lost.

Application 1:
This section outlines a possible solution for triggering the trace on a particular fault or alarm
number. You simply have to load the "trigger on fault number.dnl" parameter file stored under
.zip to SIMOREG.
See also the function diagrams in Chapter 8 of the operating instructions:
The diagram below shows the sheet number of the associated function diagram
(e.g. -G120-).
Technological software option S00 must be enabled for this application (see the description
for parameter U977). If the function blocks specified below are used for other purposes, you
must provide other function blocks for the evaluation.
In connector K0801, the number of the current alarm is transferred in the low byte and the
number of the current fault is transferred in the high byte.
K0801 is connected to connector-binector converter FB10 so that the bytes can be evaluated
individually with binector-connector converters FB13 and FB14. The bytes separated in this
way are evaluated via limit monitors FB73 and FB74 to determine whether they correspond
with the relevant fault or alarm number. The trace is triggered with a high signal on the
corresponding binector B9171or B9174.
Required settings:
P412.F: enter the alarm number for the trigger
P413.F: enter the fault number for the trigger
Pxxx.F are function data set parameters; when the function data set is switched, enter the
number in all the function data sets used.
Set P834 = 5
U845 = 9171: trace is triggered on the alarm number set in P412.
U845 = 9174: trace is triggered on the fault number set in P413.

Application 2:
When the trace for a device is triggered, the trace for a further device is also to be triggered
in order to obtain comparable traces that can be evaluated together.
Applications include devices connected in parallel via a parallel interface, applications for 12-
pulse operation, master/slave device operation, and applications for device load balancing
control.
Binector B9999 (trigger condition for trace function fulfilled) can be evaluated for the master
device. This binector can be transferred as a binary signal, or, following connection of a
binector/connector converter, transferred to a slave device via the parallel or peer-to-peer
interface. The incoming binector is used here to simultaneously trigger the trace function via
U845 = required binector number for the trigger and P834 = 5.
This enables traces to be recorded almost synchronously in more than one device.

4) Error diagnosis:
A connection cannot be established:
Check the cable that you are using.
Do you have the latest version of the DriveMonitor database? If not, download it from the
Internet.
The factory setting for 6RA70 and DriveMonitor is preconfigured to USS interface 1
(connector X300) and a baud rate of 9.6 kBd.
The trace function does not work properly:
Do you have the latest version of the DriveMonitor database? If not, update it.
Writing parameter files:
If a CUD1 is replaced by a module with a more recent firmware version, no further action,
such as a new parameter download, is necessary. The new parameters are copied with their
factory settings and do not affect the module in any way. After the module has been
replaced, you are advised to carry out a (complete) parameter upload to ensure that an up-
to-date parameter file is available for the application.
If a current CUD1 is replaced by a module with an older firmware version, F062 may occur
with fault value 1. You can hide the error message by pressing the P and higher keys
simultaneously so that you can access the parameters. Then restore the factory settings
(P051 = 21) and recommission the device or enter the system-specific parameters.
If a replacement device with a more recent CUD1 is used, you may need to modify a number
of parameters after you have downloaded the original system parameters. After the
parameters have been downloaded, a message appears indicating that it was not possible to
write certain parameters. Go to “Details” to find out the numbers of the parameters
concerned and change their contents accordingly.
Note: The download does not include the parameters for the serial interfaces, for example,
Profibus address P918; these parameters must be modified manually afterwards.
The device parameters not included in the download are as follows:
P051, P055, P057, P781, P783, P786, P791, P793, P796, P801, P803, P806, P825, P826,
P918, P971.
Note: for additional information, see also "Help" – "Help Topics" in the menu bar and "F1" for
online help.
