Findings:
Question 1: 100% of my students knew my name. This means I have formed a great rapport
with my students. My name was given to the students verbally and was written on the board
everyday as a reminder. Having all the students know my name created a higher respect and
relationship in the classroom. I believe students felt extremely comfortable in my classroom
which meant I had created a safe learning environment.
Question 2: 100% of my students agreed that “my teacher asks us to summarize what we have
learned in a lesson.” During each activity of the lesson I am always asking questions to facilitate
discussion. I do this to check for understanding and to set high expectations in the classroom. I
want my students to be able to express their own opinion as well as be able to handle when
someone does not agree with their opinion. As an educator I want to hear reasoning behind
their answers to see if they really know what they are talking about. For the next day, when I
begin the following lesson I will ask the students what we talked about yesterday to see how
much they remembered and to make a connection between classes.
Question 3: 92% of students agreed and 2% of students disagreed that “I am able to connect
what we learn in this class to what we learn in other subjects.” A lot of the topics we have
discussed in class apply to other subjects. As an educator I try to make my classroom as cross-
curricular as possible. For example, when talking about the body systems, it can be implied that
the students learn much of them in science. However, I was not there when Miss. Siegel went
over these subjects or, if I was there, it was her teaching them and not me. My subjects that I
taught were more health related such as self-esteem and bullying. For the students that
disagreed they were most likely only thinking about the topics I taught and how they would
apply to subjects like math, social studies, or science. For the students who agreed, they were
thinking of the overall subject matter in the class for the whole semester as well as my
activators that I introduced to the classroom which are ELA based.
Question 4: 100% of the students agreed that “My teacher uses open-ended questions that
enable me to think of multiple possible answers.” For all my units I try to ask questions that get
students to think of every possible answer that can be applied. In my classroom no answer is a
wrong answer to create a safe learning environment. To meet diverse needs of every student I
try to make students think of multiple possible answers when talking about sensitive topics
such as body image, sexual harassment, or puberty. This way everyone can feel comfortable in
the classroom and many things feel normalized.
Question 5: 84% of students agreed and 16% disagreed that “In this class, students review each
other’s work and provide each other with helpful advice on how to improve.” Unlike Physical
Education there is not a lot of feedback provided on activities or projects until they ae
completed. As an educator I try to provide the students with more interactive activities that get
everyone moving and working collaboratively rather than individual worksheet work. For the
students that agree they are probably thinking of the projects and jeopardy games we play. For
projects I allow students to work together, and when they do they are able to give each other
advice to create the best presentation. During jeopardy games, students work n groups and
must collaborate with their team hearing everyone’s opinion before they give a final answer.
However most of the time work is done individually because I am all about self-expression so
for the students that disagreed they are thinking of individual work where no feedback or
review is given until I, the educator looks over it and grades it. For future lessons and classes I
should provide more collaborative activities and work for students to give advice and review
each other’s work.
Question 6: 100% of students agreed that “The material in this class is clearly taught.” As an
educator I make sure my lessons are well-prepared. They all have a well thought out sequence
and pacing to them which makes the material easy to learn and connect with. I provide myself
with enough days to get the material across and if more time is needed I work it into my
schedule to fit it in for optimal learning. Questions are always asked for further understanding
and time is taken out of class for students to ask questions if they are confused on a subject or
need further explanations. An agenda board is shown visually and verbally as well as
instructions to work sheets, to meet diverse needs and create a safe learning environment.
Question 7: 90% of students agreed and 10% disagreed that “My teacher asks me to rate my
understanding of what we have learned in this class.” I do not necessarily ask student to rate
their understanding, but I do ask them multiple times verbally if they understand what they are
learning. Worksheets are provided as well so I can see where each student’s understanding is at
and what I need to go over in more detail. For the students that disagreed I believe they were
looking at this question literally and thinking of it as if I ask them 1-10 what their understanding
for the lesson was.
Question 8: 100% of students agreed that “In this class, I learn how to use technology well to
support my learning.” Every lesson I try to introduce multiple uses of technology in the
classroom. For presentations I have introduced Prezi, Nearpod, and google slides. For class
projects I have introduced Animoto which is a video presentation. For quizzes or tests in class I
have introduced Kahoot and Plickers. Videos are also shown in class through Amazon, Netflix,
Disocvery Ed. and Kids Health. I have used the Elmo as well when going over worksheets in
class.
Question 9: 100% of students agreed that “I am challenged to support my answers or reasoning
in this class.” If a student has a specific opinion on a topic I ask them to express their view more
thoroughly. In the classroom we do a lot of activities where students need to choose a certain
side to agree with and then have a professional debate discussion about it. Students must
express why they agree or disagree with the topic that is being discussed. On the activators,
students must answer with a why, to express their own emotions and feelings. A “why” is
always expected in order to set high expectations in the classroom.
Overall Findings: I have demonstrated a lot of positive efforts in the classroom through my
teaching in relations to the questions on the survey. I need to improve the way I have students
approach activities, by making them more group oriented. I also must check in with students in
a clearer way such as exit slips, to see what students are excelling in and what they personally
are having difficulty with. By doing this, the results will change to show everyone is succeeding
in the classroom. I have met diverse needs, set high expectations, made well-structured lesson,
and created a safe learning environment. To meet all six elements, I must improve my teaching
by using a higher level of reflective practice and adjustment to practice.
