COURSE OVERVIEW: This course provides students with the knowledge of the properties of different types of
materials used in construction ranging from wood, steel, aluminum, and iron. A detailed
analysis of the methods of application of these materials is the main subject of this
course.

LEARNING Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to review how some of the
OBJECTIVES: building materials (mainly wood and steel in this course) are obtained and processed.
The intent of this course is to help the students understand the evolutionary
development of the system, and the properties of its major materials.
COURSE A weekly two hour lecture along with weekly quiz, a group project, and a final exam will be

STUDENT Students are expected to:
RESPONSIBILITIES: • Attend classes regularly and punctually.
• Study and perform as necessary to obtain passing grades.
• Conduct themselves in a professional manner at all times.

• Follow directions outlined by instructors or school administrators.
• Respect and follow the policies of NewSchool.
Please make every effort to preserve the quality of the learning environment. Limit your
use of spray paints and adhesives to approved locations. Always use drop cloths and
cutting boards. Students are required to complete Shop Certification Courses prior to
using shop equipment. Refer to Student Rules of Conduct in the School Catalog.
ATTENDANCE: A student must attend a minimum of 70% of scheduled class hours in each course to be
eligible for graduation. Any student whose cumulative attendance falls below 70% will be
put on attendance probation until the end of the following quarter. If, at the end of the
probation period the student’s attendance is still below 70%, the student may be
terminated from their program. Students with attendance problems may be advised,
reassigned, placed on probation, failed or dismissed from NewSchool. Students may
follow the student appeals policy if they wish to appeal their attendance record.
MAKE‐UP WORK: NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS ALLOWED!
GRADES: Students will be evaluated and graded according to the following procedures:
Participation/quizzes: 5%
Mid‐Term Exam: 30%
Research Project: 25%
Final Exam: 40%
SPECIAL NEEDS: Students requiring special accommodations must meet privately with the Director of
Student Advising to determine what specialized services and accommodations are needed
to successfully complete the educational program here at NewSchool.
RETENTION OF All student work including drawings, models, papers and tests that have been submitted
STUDENT WORK: to NewSchool to satisfy course or degree requirements become the property of the
NewSchool of Architecture & Design. This work may be used for exhibition purposes,
documentation for accreditation proceedings or instruction. Students must photograph
their work for their portfolio before the final jury of each quarter. NewSchool is under no
obligation to retain student work.
STUDIO CULTURE: Students and Faculty working together over the past academic year revised the studio
culture policy. A handout will be available on the first day of class, student

representatives will visit each studio to discuss the policy and the issue will also be
addressed at the all school convocation.
NAAB CRITERIA: Our accredited degree programs must ensure each graduate possesses knowledge and
skills set forth by the National Architectural Accrediting Board in their Student
Performance Criteria which address two levels of accomplishment:
Understanding: the assimilation and comprehension of information without necessarily
being able to see its full implication.
Ability: the skill in using specific information to accomplish a task, in correctly selecting
the appropriate information, and in applying it to the solution of a specific problem.
Selected NAAB Criteria for this course are listed below and in the NAAB Matrix. Bold type
indicates primary criteria while standard type indicates secondary criteria. The letter “E”
indicates that evidence in the form of tests, papers, projects or other assignments will be
collected and retained to document the student’s understanding or ability of the selected
criteria.
