7 Electrical Load Study

7.1 Terminology
The following terminology is used within the electrical load study.
 Absorbed Load kW (P1)
For pumps, the absorbed load is the shaft load on duty point.
For packaged equipment, the absorbed load is the load during normal operation.

 Rated Load kW (P2)

Motor / packaged equipment nameplate power rating.

 Efficiency % ()
Motor / packaged equipment efficiency, usually taken from the datasheet or estimated.

 Power Factor (Cos Ø)

Motor / packaged equipment power factor, usually taken from the datasheet or estimated.

 Load Factor
Factor used to predict actual load on motor / consumer, the load factor is calculated as
follows:
Absorbed Load
Load Factor =
Rated Load
 Absorbed Current A
Current absorbed by the motor / package during normal operation

 Consumed Load kW
Is the actual power consumed by the motor / packaged equipment under normal
operation, taking efficiency and load factor into consideration.
For continuous loads, the consumed load is calculated as follows:

Rated Load (P2) x Load Factor

Consumed Load =

For intermittent Loads, the consumed load is calculated as follows:

Rated Load (P2) x Load Factor x Diversity

Consumed Load =

 Consumed Reactive Load kVAr

The consumed reactive load is calculated as follows:

Consumed kVAr = Consumed Load (kW) x Tan Ø

= Consumed Load (kW) x Tan (ACos Power Factor)

 Diversity
Factor used to predict the percentage time that the load is operated:
C - Continuous - Motor / packaged equipment running or operating
continuously (diversity = 100%);
I - Intermittent - Motor / packaged equipment running or operating
intermittently (diversity between 0 and 100%);
S - Standby - Motor / packaged equipment in standby (diversity 0%).

 Data
The load data shown in the Electrical Load Study is updated during the project, as the
design progresses:
E - Estimated - Based on past projects and engineering judgment, no input
from the equipment suppliers;
P - Preliminary - Based on information provided by the equipment suppliers in
their bid;
C - Confirmed - Based on confirmed information provided by the equipment
suppliers or as-built information for existing equipment.
 Contingency / Design Margin
Contingency / design margin added to the load of individual switchboards and distribution
boards for the purpose of ensuring equipment is not undersized and has sufficient spare
capacity for reasonable future growth. Note, the contingency / design margin on a
downstream switchboard is not reflected in the total load of the upstream switchboard.
This is to avoid distortions caused by multiplying contingency / design margins together.
