Telescopes
1A
How does a telescope work?
The pictures below show the difference between how we see
things with our eyes and how we see things through a telescope.
The pupil doesn’t allow enough light to enter the eye for us to see
the details of distant objects. Also, a distant object only projects a
very small picture onto the back of the eye.
Telescopes use lenses to enable us to see distant objects and more
details. The big end allows lots of light from the distant object to
enter. The lens in that end focuses the light to make a small, bright
image. The small lens on the part of the telescope close to our eye
magnifies the image over a bigger area of the back of the eye. The
result? We can see distant objects with great detail!
