Learning Target: The students will be able to choose between a word that is singular and a word that is
plural.
Students’ Needs: The students are learning how to read and write, so this lesson will help them to move
up into first grade. I will first give a lesson to the students on the difference between singular and plural
words as well as how to make a singular word plural. Students need to be familiar with the words given
to them, and if they are not it will be necessary to provide pictures. I will have the students tell me what
they know about the first Thanksgiving and then I will have them tell me all that they know about
Thanksgiving in general and the traditions that they do with their families. Students will also have to be
familiar with the vocabulary from the book, which will be reviewed before the book is read. These
words will focus on some of the vocabulary mentioned in the book.

Materials: One Little, Two Little, Three Little Pilgrims by B.G. Hennessy, worksheet on singular and
plural words, overhead projector, easel, markers, chart paper for easel.
Language Function: I will be teaching my students how to make words plural and teaching them the
distinction between singular and plural words. Explaining, evaluating, and interpreting would be
appropriate for this lesson. In this lesson, the teacher will be explaining the lesson to the students of how
to identify singular words and distinguish them from plural words as well as making a singular word
plural. The teacher will also be evaluating the students on how well they grasp the lesson with the
activity (worksheet) after the lesson is taught. The main goal for this lesson is to have the children be
able to write words that are singular and plural and to identify words that are singular and plural.
Lesson Plan (step by step sequence of the lesson)
Before: First, I would give my students a mini lesson on singular and plural nouns and making a
clear distinction about what is plural and what is singular using an overhead to demonstrate.
Then, before reading the book, I would highlight some of the words that will be in the book and
ask the students what they know about the first Thanksgiving. I would write their responses on
an easel for them to see visually.
During: I will have my students identify words in the book that we have gone over that are
singular and plural by calling on students during the reading to prep them for the post reading
activity.
After: For the post reading activity, I would have my students fill out a worksheet using
vocabulary from the book telling me if the word is singular and plural. I will have them color the
pictures on the worksheet if they wish. There will be check boxes with “S” for singular and “P”
for plural that they check. I thought this form of assessment would be good for the students.
Since it is so young, it is hard to formally assess them on things. How I will evaluate the students
is shown below.

Assessment:
Resources: Worksheet, One Little, Two Little, Three Little Pilgrims by B.G. Hennessy
6E Model in Lesson:
1. Engage: Having the students tell me what they know about the first Thanksgiving and by having
students tell me when a word is singular or plural.

singular and plural words and the students identifying them.
3. Explain: The actual lesson teaching them the distinction of singular and plural words and how to
make a word plural.
4. Explore: I will have the students ask each other for help during the worksheet activity as well as
walking around while they are working on the worksheet for any additional help
5. Evaluate: The worksheet
6. E-Learning: Overhead projector, the text can be provided electronically
