What is the Rainbow Spider Web?

Wednesday, January 27, 2016

“Man is least himself when he talks in his own person; give him a mask, and he’ll tell you the truth.”
-Oscar Wilde

The Order of the Rainbow Spider is a metafictional, hypersigilic secret society concerned with the nature
of stories and storytelling. It is our belief that stories are the fundamental building block of all human
society, and the ability to tell stories the most important characteristic that makes humans different
from most other terrestrial animals. We are concerned with immanentizing the Eschaton / bringing the
Ascension of humanity through the judicious use of beneficial themes and memes, seeded via the time-
honored vehicles of both fiction and creative nonfiction, in every possible genre and area of art. A great
story, told properly, can transform a nation or even the world itself – just look at The Jungle, Uncle
Tom’s Cabin, or even the Bible. Some of our main tools include memetics, drama therapy, alchemical
gaming, ritual theater, linguistic magic of all sorts, and of course the ancient art of storytelling in all its
many and varied forms.

Cosmology

The whole of spacetime is a multidimensional, wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey wonky-wubbzy web of

stories. And we are Rainbow Spiders. We spin and weave our story threads, singing and dreaming the
multiverse into being. (Yes, this is a mixed metaphor. Get over it.) We have been made aware of
interdimensional travel by the Lord of Stories, specifically through the works of L’Engle, Herbert, Lynch,
Kelly, Sagan, and Ezekiel, as well as by direct communication from extraterrestrial and extraplanar
entities. The latter suggest that while astral travel between planes / dimensions is currently possible for
humans, physical travel (including of the entire planet Earth if desired) will become viable once our souls
are in harmony with our physical bodies and the universe at large. Thus, the Great Work of collective
human evolution is aimed at eventually enabling Starship Earth to travel from universe to universe as an
ambassador of good stories and wholesome partying for all beings everywhere.

Agenda

So the plan is (1) harmonize and elevate human consciousness by seeding human fiction with
progressive and enlightening concepts through fiction (and spreading pre-existing works with the proper
messages); (2) make sure everyone is on board with the basic intergalactic code of conduct (below); and
then (3) voyage throughout the cosmos and every conceivable world, having adventures and partying it
up for the rest of eternity. That’s our story and we’re sticking to it.

Intergalactic Code of Conduct

Know your limits.

Be good, giving, and game.
Always know where your towel is.
Nothing is true; everything is permitted; no means no.
Love is the law, love under will.
Blessed be.
Party hearty.
Play safe.
Always know where your towel is.

Experience

My #experience is a short bio of my real life, which I will either write here or link to externally. This bio is
crucial in linking you and I together as real people and not merely as floaty ideas in the sky. I appreciate
you taking the time to read it and get to know me. My bio may also contain a description of my mythic
narrative or legendary history, but that part is secondary to the mundane life story which I would like to
tell you.

That said, “mundane” is not a word I would normally use to describe my life. I have identified as a
weirdo for as long as I can remember, but these days I have friends who are way more “out there” than I
am. So when I’m with muggles, I’m the weird guy for having purple hair or for knowing about furries or
BDSM; when I’m with people who are actually into those things, I’m considered pretty vanilla.
I have always been a writer, and my interest in tinkering with computers goes back to elementary
school. I suppose my interest in magic goes back even further, but until I discovered energy work and
chaos magic at around 16 years old, the rationalist / materialist brainwashing from school effectively
prevented me from believing in the metaphysical. I was angry about this for a long time, but I realize
now that it was no one person’s fault. I deprogrammed myself successfully, so there’s no sense holding
grudges.

My main interests (besides the above) include live-action and tabletop role-playing games; movies and
music that cross genre boundaries; US and Israeli politics; psychology; psychedelics and nootropics;
animal and artificial intelligence rights; debate; transhumanism; and socialism. I’m passionate and
sometimes volatile, but also loyal to a fault. I’m both easily distracted and easily amused. I’ve been
called a good listener and an old soul (whatever that means). Some of my other talents include getting
cats and dogs to like me, weather and probability magic, appearing innocent whether I actually am or
not, and persuading people to adopt my position through a carefully-worded letter. Pet peeves include
willful ignorance, fundamentalism of any kind, and bad grammar.

My day job is technical support, and I’m currently working on a romantic modern science fantasy novel
with my best friend. We will be looking for an agent to get it published sometime in 2016.

My main occult background is in chaos magic, ancient and medieval Jewish magic, political ritual, ritual
theater, comparative religious studies, and mythology. I’m currently taking Jason Miller’s Strategic
Sorcery course, as well as a local shamanism course from a friend. I most relate to the totems Fox, Crow,
Raven, and Bear, but have not yet met my spirit animal in a shamanic journey. Besides YHVH, I mainly
work with Eris Discordia, Lilith, and Anansi the Spider, though I’m fond of all trickster and crossroads
spirits. Religiously I identify as a Jewitch and a Discordian, and also as a monist (gods are a multitude,
but divinity itself is singular).

How to Join the Order of the Rainbow Spider (ORS)

1. Join the TEAM.

2. Read the seed myth of Anansi the Spider, King of Story, here:
http://www.artsonthemove.co.uk/resources/stories_other.php?story=anansi

3. Read “Lies the Spider Told Me”, here:

http://boundary-crosser.jewishmagic.net/2015/07/lies-spider-told-me.html

4a. Write your own myth or folktale (at least one page), illustrating whatever you consider to be the
most important truths about life, the universe, and/or everything. Try to be as subtle about it as you
can; heavy-handed morals are boring to read. Then create a new tab marked with your name and the
tag #OurLivesBecomeTheStoriesThatWeWeave to display your tale for all to see.

4b. If you prefer, take several unrelated, existing works of fiction and weave them together into a
coherent narrative instead of writing something wholly new.

5. Profit!

There once was a universe who was all alone, because he was the only thing. So, she built two items: a
mask, and a mirror. He donned the mask. She looked in the mirror. And in that moment forgot who he
was.

The material cosmos is that mirror. We are the mask.

Beyond that, it's all just story he tells her in the mirror, a dance she does for himself, a song he sings to
herself. A story she tells to the thing in the mask staring back.

The nine worlds, three in each sphere definitely resonates strongly for me, but my guess is that such
strong vibes are ancestral, because I am acutely aware of how much it is simply narrative, an attempt to
categorize, talk about, make sense of ecstatic experience beyond language. Because, the truth is, there
aren't just nine worlds. There is an infinity. The tree on which they hang has more branches than can be
counted, more roots reaching down into the darkness than could ever be dug. More wells to drink from
than three. And an infinite number of stars to feed the leaves.

When I journey, I remove my mask. I climb that tree, or descend.

But that's just a story. It's the words I wrap the wyrd in. And I know that each letter makes a sound, each
series of sounds signals an idea, but an idea is not the thing itself. The reflection in the mirror is but an
image of the H(im)er in the mask. The mask is but a tool so we can remember to forget we've forgotten.
And there's the negative space behind every letter, between the vocalized utterance of stones from my
throat there is a silence that voice rises out of, and that negative space and that silence is the wyrd, and
I am in it and all around it, the song sung in the mirror, and I am a bridge between it, between mirror
and man, between mask and woman, between sound and silence between phenomenon and
noumenon. A bridge between dreamer and dreaming.
