PRESENT CONTINOUS TENSE

Present continous tense is used to describe a continued or an on going action of the


present. These action are occurring exactly at the time of speaking. It’s called progressive
tense because it refers to action which are currently in progress at the time of speaking.

For instance , I am reading a book. It mean the action (reading a book) is being done exactly
at this time of speaking.

Functions of the present continuous tense


The present continuous is used:

 to describe an action that is going on at this moment:


- You are using the microscope.
- You are studying English grammar.
- Olivia is making pizza.
- They are eating lunch right now.
- Panji is talking on the phone at the moment.

 to describe an action that is going on during this period of time or a trend:


- Are you still working for the same company?
- More and more people are becoming vegetarian.
- Shopping online is growing in popularity nowadays.
- The stocks are dropping constantly due to the economy.
- Today, most people are using whatsApp instead of text message.

 to describe an action or event in the future, which has already been planned or
prepared:
- We're going on holiday next week.
- I'm meeting my classmate tonight.
- Are they visiting you next month?

 to describe a temporary event or situation:


- He usually plays the drums, but he's playing bass guitar tonight.
- The weather forecast was good, but it's raining at the moment.

 word like "always, forever, constantly", can be used to describe and emphasise a
continuing series of repeated actions:
- Aliya and Ulan are always arguing!
- You're constantly complaining about your mother-in-law!
- They are always fighting.
- She is constantly complaining about her sister.
- Her mother is forever misplacing her keys.

 Structure of sentence :

Main verb : Present participle ( base + ing )


Ex : eating, dringking,reading,looking,swimming etc.
Auxiliary verb : is, am, are

 if subject of the sentence is “I”, then the auxiliary verb “am” will be used in
sentence
 if subject of the sentence is “She,he,it or a singular noun” then the auxiliary
verb “is” will be used in sentence
 if subject of sentence is “They,you,or a plural noun” then the verb “are” will
be used in sentence

 POSITIVE SENTENCES :

Subject + Auxiliary verb + Main verb + Object


 Subject + (is / am / are) + Present Participle verb ( verb + ing) + object

Example :
1. She is sleeping
2. You are eating some food
3. I am watching TV now
4. He is meeting his friend after school
5. They are eating lunch right now
6. We are leaving for the beach tomorrow
7. Annisa is speaking at the conference this evening
8. He is asking any question
9. Olivia is eating her meal
10. She is doing her homework now

 NEGATIVE SENTENCES :

Subject + Auxiliary verb + Not +Main verb + Object


 Subject + (is / am / are) + Not + Present Participle verb ( verb + ing) + object

Example :
1. She is not sleeping
2. You are not eating some food
3. I am not watching TV now
4. He is not meeting his friend after school
5. They are not eating lunch right now
6. We are not leaving for the beach tomorrow
7. Annisa is not speaking at the conference this evening
8. He is not asking any question
9. Olivia is not eating her meal
10. She is not doing her womework now

 INTEROGATIVE SENTENCES :

Auxiliary verb +Subject + Main verb


 (is / am / are) + Subject + Present Participle verb ( verb + ing)

Example:
1. Are you laughing at me?
2. is he calling you?
3. Are they running on the road?
4. Are you listening to me?
5. Am I telling a lie?
6. Is Olivia cooking some food?
7. Is Karina cooking in the kitchen?
8. Is he learning English grammar?
9. Are they shouting?
10. Is she doing her homework now?

 Adverb of time which mostly used in Present Continous Tense :


Just, still, now, right now, at the moment, and tomorrow
Example : - Olivia is making pizza.
- They are eating lunch right now.
- Panji is talking on the phone at the moment.
- I am writing a book now.
- We are eating noodles at the moment.
- She is still waiting for her son.
- Tomorrow, they are going to go to Jakarta.
