Battery Development: Electricity Storage of the

FutureLast Updated on 2018-01-21 11:03:55BATTERY DEVELOPMENT: Electricity Storage of the Future We have
long relied on batteries for powering small electronic devices. However, battery technology has evolved far past the AAAs we
still use, and hold significant promise for transforming our present into a sustainable future. Among the many places that
battery technology is changing is for electric and hybrid vehicles. For example, research is underway that shows semisolid
fuel cell batteries hold significant advantages over current lithium ion battery designs – once the bugs are worked out. Should
today’s research be fully implemented, lithium ion batteries could hold over ten times as much energy. Even further in the
future, when battery development moves past lithium, the potential is greater still. The implications of advanced vehicle
battery designs are potentially... More »

CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE RISK OF

NUCLEAR WARLast Updated on 2017-01-16 08:12:19CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE RISK OF NUCLEAR
WAR For some time experts, including the U.S. military, have been warning Congress that climate change has serious
national security implications, including increased risk of armed conflict.[1] Now a December 2016 article from the Princeton
University Project on Science and Global Security[2] specifically calls attention to risks of nuclear war. One of the most
dangerous possible nuclear flash points is in South Asia, where nuclear-armed India and Pakistan have fought three wars and
numerous smaller armed conflicts, often over the disputed territory of Kashmir. Now the danger is being heightened by
increasing tensions over water rights. Both countries depend heavily on the Indus River system, originating in the snow and
glacier meltwater of the Himalayas, and tensions have been rising over such actions as India’s construction of dams on... More

Republicans and anti-science ignorance: Nature
editorialLast Updated on 2017-01-16 08:09:51Nature, the science magazine, wrote a scathing editorial in 2011, called
Into Ignorance. It describes the increasingly anti-science Republican attitude exhibited in pushing their bill to prevent the
Environmental Protection Agency from regulating greenhouse-gas emissions, which the agency declared on the basis of
reliable scientific evidence to be a threat to public welfare in 2009. The Science editorial says: "...Republicans on the House of
Representatives' energy and commerce committee have made clear their disdain for climate science. At a subcommittee
hearing on 14 March, anger and distrust were directed at scientists and respected scientific societies. Misinformation was
presented as fact, truth was twisted and nobody showed any inclination to listen to scientists, let alone learn from them."

Carbon Tax Bill introduced by Rep. StarkLast Updated

on 2014-04-11 21:04:00Stark Introduces Carbon Tax Bill to Reduce Emissions, Deficit
CBO Says Carbon Tax is Most
Economically Efficient Way to Cut Carbon Emissions WASHINGTON October 24, 2011 - Congressman Stark (D-CA)
announced the introduction of the Save Our Climate Act, H.R. 3242. This legislation would levy a carbon tax on fossil fuels in
order to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, spur development of alternative energy, protect consumers from rising energy
costs, mitigate climate change, and reduce our deficit. The Carbon Tax Center estimates that over 10 years, the Save our
Climate Act would raise more than $2.6 trillion in revenue and reduce carbon emissions by 25 percent. Over several decades,
the legislation will reduce the United States' carbon emissions to 80 percent below the country's emissions levels in 1990,
which is the level scientists say must be achieved to stabilize our... More »

Power Shift and Youth Involvement on Climate

ChangeLast Updated on 2014-03-29 09:24:31POWER SHIFT Introduction Green Economy Climate change is often
thought of as a political issue mostly discussed and dealt with by adults in the confines of a congressional house or the United
Nations. But global warming is something that affects everyone, not just politicians. Young people will be especially affected
because they will live longer and experience the more severe effects of global warming, since it is only getting worse. Many
youths have realized this and decided to take action. Some are being galvanized by the organizations Energy Action Coalition
and Power Shift. Both seek to increase youth involvement with the movement to mitigate climate change. One major event
organized by Power Shift was a march in Washington, DC. The big push was on April 18, 2011, in which thousands of youths

Quick one-liner rebuttals to contrarian claimsLast

Global Warming has NOT stoppedLast Updated on 2014-

02-03 10:33:46GLOBAL WARMING HAS NOT STOPPED! The fallacy "global warming has stopped" starts with a cherry-
picked unusually high surface atmosphere temperature point in 1998 that resulted from a huge "El Niño", which basically
transferred a lot of heat out of the ocean to the atmosphere. Following 1998, La Niña dominated, which transferred heat from
the atmosphere into the ocean (and lately into the deep ocean). Looking only at the atmosphere and neglecting the heat transfer
in and out of the ocean leads to the fallacy. The total warming of the planet (ocean + atmosphere) has been trending upwards.
If the El Niño/La Niña noise is subtracted out, or if the Arctic region is included, the global warming trend in the surface
atmosphere is clear (as shown below). The scientific consensus is that with careful analysis there has been no pause in
global... More »

is a match-making service to connect climate scientists with lawmakers and the media. The group is committed to providing
rapid, high-quality information to media and government officials. Climate Science Rapid Response team member scientists
are chosen to cover a wide array of topics related to Climate Science. They have been selected based upon their publications in
professional peer-reviewed scientific journals. There is a wide gap between what scientists know about climate change and
what the public knows. The scientists of the Climate Science Rapid Response Team understand that better communication can
narrow this gap. The media is in the best position to deliver accurate science information to the general public and to our
elected leaders but only when they have access to that... More »

Risky Business (Climate Change)Last Updated on 2014-

01-13 05:36:54RISKY BUSINESS How much economic risk does the United States face from the impacts of climate change?
The Risky Business initiative will help us find out. Risky Business includes two core components: An independent risk
assessment will combine existing data on the current and potential impacts of climate change with original research that will
quantify potential future costs. The results, to be released in the summer of 2014, will reveal the likely financial risk the
United States faces from unmitigated climate change. An engagement effort will target the economic sectors most at risk from
a changing climate, and begin the process of helping leaders from across these sectors prepare a measured response to the risks
they face. The engagement will be led by a risk committee composed of top national and regional leaders from across the
American economic and political spectrum. Risky... More »

FOI Abuse and Attacks on Climate Risk

ManagementLast Updated on 2013-11-11 05:53:39FOI Abuse and Attacks on Climate Risk Management. This topic
is concerned with abuse of Freedom of Information Acts (FOI Acts) ultimately aimed at attacking responsible climate risk
management. The backers are fossil fuel interests and right-wing libertarian supporters. Attacks on climate science is a main
intermediary strategy. While FOI Acts generally protect the public, FOI is misused by some climate science deniers as a
weapon with two main goals. First goal: Request many emails and documents to find a few isolated comments that are
misinterpreted and used as fodder in right-wing media to attack climate science. Second goal: Harass targeted climate
scientists, sometimes including intimidation, disrupt their work, and try to discredit them. Examples are documented below.

Michael Mann: Climate-Change Deniers Must

Stop Distorting the EvidenceLast Updated on 2013-10-03 19:57:07" It happens every six years or so: The
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) publishes its assessment of the current state of scientific understanding
regarding human-caused climate change. That assessment is based on contributions from thousands of experts around the
world through an exhaustive review of the peer-reviewed scientific literature and a rigorous, several-years-long review
process. Meanwhile, in the lead-up to publication, fossil-fuel industry front groups and their paid advocates gear up to attack
and malign the report, and to mislead and confuse the public about its sobering message. So in the weeks leading up to the
release of the IPCC Fifth Assessment scientific report, professional climate-change deniers and their willing abettors and
enablers have done their best to distort what the report actually says about the genuine scientific evidence and the... More »

Hurricane SandyLast Updated on 2012-11-03

00:00:00 HURRICANE SANDY and GLOBAL WARMING. SANDY was a tropical cyclone that severely affected the Mid-
Atlantic and Northeastern US in late October. It was the largest Atlantic hurricane on record, with winds spanning 1,100 miles
(1,800 km)... (see Wikipedia) Global warming makes extreme events like Sandy more probable. The Atlantic ocean gulf
current is warmer, giving more energy to the weather system. The sea level is getting higher, making flooding worse. The
anomalous jet stream configuration that lead to the "left turn" of Sandy smack into shore is an example of the destabilization
of the jet stream that has been qualitatively linked to global warming heating up the arctic, see HERE. In the diagram below,

created by the XL pipeline. The Keystone XL Pipeline, or just the XL Pipeline, is a proposed extension to a pipeline system
that would transport synthetic crude oil from Canada to refineries in the United States. For a comprehensive introduction to
issues with the pipeline, see HERE. XL pipeline proponents have attempted to frame the debate over whether the pipeline
should be constructed in terms of whether it will be economically good for the American people. (They have no argument for
how it will affect the environment; environmental impacts will unquestionably be severe.) Their arguments in this frame of
mind have taken on two forms: they claim that the pipeline will... More »

Water-Based Renewable EnergyLast Updated on 2011-08-

27 00:00:00Climate change is upon us, and is causing devastating effects already, with more to come. One area it is affecting
is our water resources (see http://climate.uu-uno.org/blogs/view/169148/?topic=71030). But water can be enlisted as an ally
in the fight against global warming. Several different forms of renewable energy are water-based. The most widely used
form of water-based renewable energy is hydropower. Turbines are placed in streams, rivers, and other small bodies of water
with a current. The current of water turns the turbine, and this motion is converted to usable electricity. Hydropower
currently supplies about 2% of the electricity used in the United States and 20% worldwide. Pros: Hydroelectric power is
relatively cheap and produces low carbon emissions. Cons: In many cases dams are used to facilitate the current; these dams

Skeptical Science website has done it again with a great compilation of Monckton Myths. Christopher Monckton, trained in
classics and journalism with no scientific credentials, is influential among the right-wing libertarian and fossil-fuel supported
contrarians/deniers/faux skeptics. Monckton falsely claims that he is a member of the British House of Lords and claims to
have invented a cure for AIDS and the common cold. He was invited by Republicans to testify on climate science before the
U.S. Congress in 2010, and that testimony was described by actual scientists as containing, among other attributes, "chemical
nonsense". As the distinguished MIT climatologist Kerry Emanuel says, "Thus into the arena steps a whole host of charlatans

Winter Snow and Global WarmingLast Updated on 2011-

01-17 00:00:00Global Warming, Extreme Weather, and Snow Storms in the US and Europe The global warming trend of
climate change and the recent huge winter snow storms in the US and Europe are consistent, because both exist. A new line of
inquiry by Overland et al. and by Petoukhov et al. suggests that global warming and the recent huge snow storms are actually
causally linked. Here's why. The jet stream, which circulates the globe mostly west-to-east azimuthally with some meanders
(see video and picture below), usually provides a "barrier" that contains the cold winter Arctic weather near the north pole.
However, the jet stream sometimes destabilizes, so that the barrier becomes "broken", large south-north meanders occur, and
the jet stream thus no longer contains the cold Arctic weather. Now, with global warming, the Arctic has been heating up, with
Arctic sea ice... More »

Cancun Agreements adopted at COP16Last Updated on

2010-12-11 00:00:00The Cancun Climate Conference COP16 (10 Dec 2010) adopted the "Cancun Agreements". The vote
was unanimous with the sole exception of Bolivia. While not a binding treaty, the Cancun Agreements unexpectedly made
some significant progress. See HERE for some background and HERE for our Cancun Blog. "Adoption" is significant since
the Copenhagen Accord from the COP15 Conference was only "noted". When the Cancun Agreements text emerges, we will
publish it. A summary is given in an AP report HERE: The new agreement creates "building blocks" for a new global pact
and, unexpectedly, gives recognition to the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions from industrial countries by 25 to 40
per cent from 1990 levels within the next 10 years. Current pledges amount to about 16 percent. Debate on a larger pact was

Climate summit in Cancun intent on progressLast

Updated on 2010-12-11 00:00:00The U.N.-sponsored climate talks entered a new phase on Monday, Dec. 6 ,as delegates and
high-ranking ministers from nearly 200 countries settled into vast, sunless meeting rooms, intent on restoring the credibility of
a process aimed at slowing global warming. "In stark contrast to Copenhagen, there's less acrimony, and less ambition and less
expectations," said Jennier Haverkamp, managing director for international climate policy at the Environmental Defense Fund.
"Ironically, that seems to have opened the door to some modest progress." One sign of potential movement came Monday
when China indicated that it would subject its voluntary carbon cuts to detailed international scrutiny and verification,
something the United States has identified as a sticking point. But it remains unclear how this process would be conducted.

2010 Ties for Warmest Year (NASA)Last Updated on

2010-12-10 00:00:00NASA Research - 2010 Tied for Warmest Year on Record January 12, 2011 Global surface temperatures
in 2010 tied 2005 as the warmest on record, according to an analysis released Wednesday by researchers at NASA's Goddard
Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York. The two years differed by less than 0.018 degrees Fahrenheit. The difference
is smaller than the uncertainty in comparing the temperatures of recent years, putting them into a statistical tie. In the new
analysis, the next warmest years are 1998, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2009, which are statistically tied for third warmest
year. The GISS records begin in 1880. Previous information: NASA: 2010 Meteorological Year Warmest Ever The 2010

carbon dioxide out of the air. "We don't really grasp the scale of the problem we're facing," says Gates."The right goal is not to
cut our carbon emissions in half. The right goal is zero." Gates supports next-generation nuclear plants, traveling-wave
reactors which use waste uranium for fuel . Unlike energy-farming approaches such as wind and solar, traveling-wave reactors
don't have a problem with location and storage. "Climate change is a terrible problem, and it absolutely needs to be solved. It
