5.0 Corrosion Charts

The Sulfuric Acid Chart and the Caustic Soda Service Chart are defined as the charts shown
in the Corrosion Data Survey, published by NACE (National Association of Corrosion
Engineers).

6.0 Pipe Wall Thickness

Unless otherwise specified, piping component wall thickness, specified in the individual line
classes or indicated on flow diagrams or drawings, are based only on design considerations of
pressure, temperature, and allowances for corrosion, erosion, manufacturer's minus tolerance
and any allowance for the depth of threads or grooves. Piping component wall thickness do
not include additional thickness that may be required to compensate for design considerations
such as thermal loads due to restraints, live loads, hydraulic shock, or loads and sources from
other causes, all of which must be considered in the design of piping systems.

7.0 Vacuum Ratings

Unless otherwise specified, pressures specified in the individual line classes are positive
pressure. Piping subjected to a negative pressure shall be investigated on an individual basis
since the engineering design specified in the applicable line class may, or may not, be
suitable.

8.0 Manufacturer Reference

Items specified or referenced by manufacturer and figure number are not intended to exclude
items offered by other manufacturers. Products of reputable manufacturers and of comparable
type, quality, and characteristics may be submitted to the Fluor Piping Engineering for
acceptance.

25.1 Construction Details

A. Pipe Bends

Bends may be used in place of fittings subject to authorization by Fluor Piping Engineering or
when it is specifically noted. These fittings shall be fabricated using seamless pipe.

B. Seal Welding

26.0 Thread compound or Teflon tape shall not be used on threads to be seal welded. Threads shall be covered
with weld metal whose weld leg dimension shall be no less than the pipe wall thickness.

27.0 Ball and plug valves shall be disassembled prior to seal welding to prevent heat damage to packing and
seals.

28.0 Screwed connections at instruments shall not be seal welded.

C. Valve Installation

29.0 The preferred orientation for swing and split-disc type check valves is horizontal; however, vertical
orientation is an acceptable alternative in upward flow installations. Where allowed, split-disc wafer type
check valves, when installed in horizontal lines, shall be installed with the shaft in the vertical position.
Other types of check valves shall be installed in the horizontal position. Other orientations require Fluor
Engineering authorization.

30.0 The type of check valves shall be individually investigated for reciprocating pump or compressor discharge
lines.

31.0 Valves installed against water storage tank nozzles shall be made of steel and shall be so identified on
P&IDs and drawings.

32.0 Flanged valves shall be used in place of socketweld in locations where isolation by blinding is required.

33.0 Flanged valves shall be used in place of socketweld or screwed valves whenever mounted directly to
vessels or other equipment that has been furnished with flanged connections. The rating of the valves shall
match the nozzle connection.

34.0 Diaphragm valves shall be oriented as specified by the manufacturer for self-draining.

D. Underground Protection

Buried steel piping shall be externally protected.
