I’ve been on Social Media platforms long before I started using them for my business. I belong to the
generation that practically grew up on Social Media sites and can hardly even remember a time when
they didn’t exist. My first one, as I can remember, was Myspace, back when it was still a thing. Then
Facebook appeared and swooped the playground. Honestly, I find it’s UI to be super user-friendly and
easy to operate, but at the same time, as a private user, I consider it to be its biggest downside.

The worst thing about Facebook- yes, the worst- is its addictive setup, the way it drains people of
their free time. Notification system triggers neuro hormonal reaction, making us reply just to this one
comment, then another one, then yet another one… Before we know it, we’re hooked, and our lunch
is burnt.

As a business owner, I find Social Networks extremely helpful in terms of finding the jobs and
expanding my business reach. It has never been easier to find new clients, and that provides for a
sense of security and freedom, which are so important in any field of work, freelancing especially.

Having said that, I do think that the scene is cluttered nowadays. That forest is becoming too dense
for my taste. Do we really need all of those sites? Working for my clients over the years, I’ve noticed
that at least two-thirds of Social Media platforms are obsolete, existing by inertia.

You kind of have to make a profile on each and every one of them, in most cases, and maintain it, basi-
cally wasting money and time. In order to appear serious, we have to be present on every one of them,
although we know, that the real effect will come from just one or two of them. Others are there just
for show, to show up on the first page Google search. Not once have I made all those profiles just to
try and squeeze out the competitor of that first page.

I hope the market will level itself in upcoming years.
