LANGUANGE/GRAMMAR FOCUS Present simple, present continuous and stative verbs.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
1. Create at least 2 grammatically correct sentences from the word given in the class.
ACTIVITIES PRE-LESSON 1. Write on the board and ask pupils what the verbs are.
2. Ask what tenses have been used and how they differ in
meaning.
- “Grandpa always sits near the window” (sits;
Present simple; This sentence talks about habit.)
-“ Grandpa is sitting near the window.” ( is sitting;
Present Continuous; this sentence talks about
something that is happening now.)
LESSON DELIVERY 4. Ask pupils to read sentences 1-4 and a-d quickly. (make
sure pupils understand why we use Present Simple.
5. Ask pupils to read sentence 1 again and to find its use in a-
d and to write answer in the box provided. Check they have
the correct answer before they do the rest of the task.
6. Ask pupils to do the task individually but check answer as
a whole class.
7. When going through answers for Grammar Activity C,
explain that stative verbs are verbs that are only used in the
present simple and provide examples (e.g. ‘Peter hates his
new school’ not ‘Peter is hating his new school’).
POST LESSON 8. Ask pupils to write two sentences using vocabulary
introduced in the unit. One sentence using a stative verb and
the other using an action verb in the present continuous.
9. Allow peer assessment and give individuals feedback as
you move between pupils’ desks.
10. Remind pupils that they can find more information about
today’s lesson in the Grammar Focus section at the end of
the Student’s Book (p.162).
