The Nawab observed that there were millions following Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
on his way to Ramkeli and the unison of the Harinaam Sankirtan that people
performed on the journey astounded him.He was bewildered at the magnanimity
of the Lord and was falling short of reason to explain this phenomenon. He
summoned his Hindu minister Keshav Chattri. He asked Keshav “Who is this
mendicant who has the whole of Bengal deliriously dancing and singing behind
him. My reasoning fails me and I am impatient beyond wits to know what is
happening.” This exclamation by the Nawab frightened Keshav.Keshav knew from
before how cruel the Nawab could get. The Nawab’s height of cruelty can be
gauged by a particular incident. When the Nawab’s palatial mansion was under
construction he would go for site inspection just to check on the quality of work
that was underway. He would often go to the fourth or fifth floor and pick up a
squabble with a lowly worker. He would complaint about the walls and the
windows that were being constructed. He would call the worker to have a close
look at the unfinished wall to check the defect. The worker would innocently close
in to the wall. When this worker got sufficiently close to the edge of the floor
railing, the Nawab would mercilessly kick the worker off the railing and the worker
would land with a thud on a hill of stones from the fifth floor. In this way the Nawab
would ruthlessly murder innocent beings and derive sadistic pleasure out of such
activity.

Rupa and Santana were actually serving such a cruel master. This cruel Nawab
however softened when he was in the company of Rupa and Sanatana. One can
imagine the transcendental qualities that both the brothers possessed to have
such a cruel person approach them with seeming humility! The Nawab who was
nothing less than an unforgiving and hard hearted ghoul, would often melt in the
company of Rupa and Sanatana. Keshav Chattri was sure that if the Nawab lost
his temper then probably he would leave no stone unturned to devastate Sri

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. To protect Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, he replied politely
to the Nawab’s question. He said “Nawabji , the Pandit whom everybody calls
Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is not a big man.He is just a measly mendicant who is
wandering aimlessly. He does not have any other occupation and therefore
chanting the Mahamantra out of want for a better indulgence. You are mistaken
that he is being followed by millions. Actually there are only a few handfuls of fools
who are following him and the reason they are following him is because they
themselves are unemployed. You have been totally misinformed about this insane
mendicant. It would call for your wisdom to just forget this mendicant and
concentrate on other important activities.” This enraged the Nawab and he
retorted “Do you feel that I have lost it, to summon you and enquire? The times are
so bad that nobody trusts anybody. It is impossible to garner a huge crowd even if
you spend the entire wealth from the royal coffers. This particular mendicant has
gathered millions without even spending a single penny. This does not appear to
be a normal happening to me. This is impossibility where someone can have the
whole state sing and dance behind you. This fellow is definitely not an ordinary
human being. He has some sort of divinity attached to him. This fellow seems to
be none other than God.” Hearing the Nawab speak thus, Keshav Chattri thought,
“This is a miracle, how is it possible that a person whose stomach is the burial
ground of cattle and horses, understand the divinity of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.
This individual whose lungs are filled with the obnoxious gases of the ‘hukka’ and
the stomach is filled with all sorts of meat savories, how such a person could
divine the nature of the Lord.” This was a simple demonstration of Sri Chaitanya
Mahaprabhu spiritual prowess and nothing else, he believed.

The Nawab issued a proclamation that “If anybody posed any impediment to the
activities of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, he would destroy such a person”.Keshav
Chattri was simply overjoyed at the Nawab’s statement. This happening reached
the ears of Rupa and Sanatana and they were terrified imagining the turn of
events. They knew that one who does not have his senses under his control can
no way be trusted. Today the Nawab may do something and tomorrow the same
person may do something totally contrary. The Nawab can never be depended
upon. They could just equate the behavior of the Nawab to that of Kamsa. Kamsa
was the charioteer of his sister for one moment and the next moment he wanted to
behead the same sister whom one thought Kamsa loved very much.Rupa and
Sanatana immediately approached Lord Chaitanya and fell down at His feet. They
told the Lord. “We are the most fallen sinners. We are also ashamed to be
standing before you. You have appeared to raise the fallen souls and there are no
more fallen souls than both of us. We are even more degraded and depraved than
Jagai and Madhai.O Lord we have spent our whole life by indulging ourselves in
unholy acts and thereby casting the noose of death around our own necks. Not

only that, we are also happily tightening the very same noose. We are immersed
in this sea of filth. Please uplift us from this entrenchment of dirty mire.

Once Srila Prabhupada was on a Morning Walk. The waves of the expansive

ocean were arriving at the shore from great distances. Looking at the waves one
devotee exclaimed “Prabhupada, just see how beautiful the ocean is, just look at
those waves”. Pat came the reply from Srila Prabhupada “Yes you are right, the
ocean is always beautiful from a distance, go near it, enter it and you will know
what I am saying. The ocean will grip you to death.” Once the devotees had gone
for a holy pilgrimage to Jagannath Puri. The Ocean at Puri is dangerously
rough.Radhanath Swami Maharaj had gone into the ocean to have a bath in a one
piece cloth. He did not come out of the ocean for a very long time. Swamiji’s
servant went inside to find out what was wrong. Maharaj said, “The ocean has
consumed the one piece of cloth with which I entered into it , how is it possible for
me to come out in this state?”The servant immediately came back to Maharaj with
a fresh piece of cloth which Maharaj used to wrap himself up. Maharaj after
coming out quipped “I entered the ocean as a Gaudiya Guru and there was every
possibility that I come out as a Naga Baba”.There was another incident where a
devotee was warned from going too deep into the ocean waters. There are some
specimens who always do contrary to what is advised. They derive a particular
pleasure in doing so.

The person who really challenges the ocean waves is usually the one who is
confident of his swimming skills. The one who is not a good swimmer always
stands at a safe distance from the ocean and is happy deriving pleasure by
sprinkling water on himself from the dead waves that manage to touch his feet
with dragging difficulty. A person who is an adept in swimming is in actuality more
vulnerable to drowning as compared to a person who does not know swimming. A
person who does not risk the ocean waves has no fear of drowning. However the
one who is proud of his swimming prowess runs the risk of drowning. One such
devotee entered deep into the ocean even after much deliberations and warnings.
Then the inevitable happened, he was dragged farther into the ocean by the
colossal waves and he had to raise both his hands towards the heavens to
indicate that he was actually drowning. The other devotees on the shore mistook
his gestures for the ecstasy of “Hari Bol” but soon realized that their candidate was
actually caught between the devil and the deep sea. Luckily for them, knowing the
nature of both humans and the oceans, there were some life guards who went for
the rescue. Thus the life of the foolish devotee was saved.
