Water Supply and Wastewater Engineering Lab 2015-En-11

Purpose
The purpose is to provide Water Supply Network to the H.B.F.C. Co-Operative
Housing society.
Water Supply System
A water supply system or water supply network is a system of engineered
hydrologic and hydraulic components which provide water supply.
To supply safe and wholesome water to consumers.
To supply water in sufficient quantities.
To supply water at convenient points and timings.
To supply water at reasonable cost to the users.
To encourage personal and house hold cleanliness of users.
Water Source
As this area is situated in Lahore and Ground Water is used as source of water
supply due to following reasons
 Water is sweet in taste
 Within extractable limits
 Requires no treatment except disinfection

To extract the ground water, installation of tube wells/deep wells is done by WASA
for water supply.

Design Criteria
Design criteria is a document that provides suitable values of different design
parameters that must be adopted during the design process.
Design criteria is based upon following parameters
 Scientific knowledge
 Past experience of service providers
 Changes in summer s life styles and habits.
 New emerging technologies.
Design Engineers are suggested to obtain and follow Local Design Criteria for
public water supply for required area. In Pakistan, Public Health Engineering
Department (PHED) and Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) provide Design
Criteria. We mostly obey the local design criteria provided by PHED.

Design of Water Supply System

Design of Water Supply System depend upon the following Factors:
 Design Period Adopted for Water Supply
 Selection of per capita water consumption (WC)
 Future population forecast

Design Period Adopted for Water Supply

Design Period is defined as number of years in future for which a proposed facility
would meet the requirement of a community.
The design period for tube well is selected 25 years in case of Direct Pumping and
pumping with Storage. The shorter design period is selected due to following
reasons:
The tube well can easily install (ease of extension) in 2-3 months and its first cost
is low as compared to dams that’s why we take its shorter design period.
Time period of 25 years is greater than the 2-3 months lead time (time from the
start of the project to its completion).
Selection of per capita water consumption (WC)
Per Capita Water Consumption is defined as the amount of water used by a
person on daily basis. It usually ranges from 45 to 650 LPCD.
For residential Usage
The water consumed by a person is 300 LPCD.

RESIDENTIAL USEAGE LPCD (Liter per Capita Per

Day)
Toilet 100
Bath 60
Kitchen 40
Laundry 20
Cooking 35
Cleaning of Cars and 25
house
Gardening 20
Total 300
Water Supply and Wastewater Engineering Lab 2015-En-11

For Commercial Purposes

For Commercial Purposes per capita water demand is 80 LPCD because each
person requires to meet his daily requirement (for drinking, toilet and washing of
shops).
For Mosque
For Mosque per capita water demand is 25 Liters per nimazi per day because each
nimazi requires 5 liters foe each prayer.
For School
For School per capita water demand is 35 Liters per student per day to fulfil daily
requirement of a student (Drinking and Toilet).
For Parks
Depending on area parks requires 350 Liter/Day for watering the plants.

Population Projection

Design of water supply scheme is based on the population projection of a city for
design period. As the population increases day by day that’s why we take into
consideration the population at the end of design period.

1. Any underestimate value makes system inadequate for the purpose intended
2. Overestimate will make the project costly.

Design Considerations
The design requirements of water distribution system is to satisfied

1. Total water demand

2. The minimum residual pressure

Total water demand
Average water Demand

The total volume of water delivered to the system. The average use in a single day
expressed in Liters per day.
Qavg=¿ 2182600 Liters/Day

Qavg=25.26 Liters /Sec

Peak Hourly water Demand

The peak consumption during any hour of the year, excluding fire demand, is
called Peak hourly consumption.
It is around 150% of the maximum daily consumption & 225% of the average daily
demand.
Q peak =56.83 Liters/ Sec

Maximum water Demand

It is the maximum water consumption during any one day in the year.
It is about 150 to 180% of average day consumption.
Qmax =37.89 Liters /sec
Water Supply and Wastewater Engineering Lab 2015-En-11

Minimum Residual Head in Pipes

Minimum Residual Head is lowest pressure at the farthest point in Water
Distribution System under maximum demand.
According to WASA Design criteria Residual head value must lie between 14m to
35m.
The Minimum Residual Head value is maintained 20-21m in the water supply
network of above area so that water can reach to end consumer with sufficient
pressure and to meet the most critical demand node in water distribution system
under maximum demand.
If pressure is below the minimum residual pressure or negative then require large
diameter of pipe and hence flow of water decreases that’s why we have to
maintain the minimum residual pressure.

Type of Pipes used in water distribution system

Type of Pipe selected for the distribution system is Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC). It is
used due to following reasons:
1. Cheap
2. Easy to install
3. Have small pumping cost
4. Non-corrosive

It mostly use in Water Supply System. It is available in 20mm to 800mm diameter.

It have types due to operating Pressure Rating of B type (200ft), C type (300ft), D
type (400ft) and E type (500ft).
B type PVC is suggested to use because it can operate at 60.97m and our
operating pressure is 21 m and it is within this pressure range of pipe B that’s why
B class Pipe is suggested to be chosen and no need of C, D and E type of PVC pipe.
Previously Asbestos pipe was frequently used in water Supply System having high
strength and offering low resistance toward flow but it is now banned due to
drastic cancer causing reasons.

Design Procedure for EPA.Net Software

Procedure
1. Draw the layout of distribution system.

2. Assign plots to each node.

3. Find out the design population to be served.
4. Adopt suitable per capita water consumption from design criteria.

5. Calculate the average consumption at each node.

6. Assign water demands to nodes (nodal demand). This should be realistic as
possible.
 Maximum Demand in case of Pumping with Storage.
 Peak demand in case of Direct Pumping.
7. Start with a trial diameter of distribution network.
8. Run the program to see whether requirement of terminal head is met in the
entire Distribution System.
9. If terminal head is less than required, increase pipe diameter and vice versa.
10.Measure the length of each pipe.

1. We mostly adopt pumping with storage method with intermittent supply of 8
hours because it is efficient and reliable as compare to Direct Pumping.
Why Pumping with Storage is better than the Direct Pumping?
Pumping with storage is better than the direct pumping due to following reasons.
 No doubt capital cost of pumping with storage method is high as compare to
Direct Pumping but it because it is efficient and reliable. Direct Pumping will
have high cost of electricity to operate pumps.
 It require few pump to deal with the constant flow rates while Direct pumping
has several pumps to deal varying demand of community.
 In case of Direct Pumping we have to bear high electricity cost in order to
operate several pumps.
 There is no storage of water in Direct Pumping that’s why we cannot deal with
firefighting demands.
 Direct pumping requires constant attendance of operators while Pumping with
storage do not require Constant attendance.
 In case of Power/tube well shut down there is no supply to community due to
no storage while in pumping with storage we the water is supplied to
community at constant rates.
 In case of Pumping with storage excess water pumped during periods of low
consumption stored in Overhead Reservoir and High consumption periods
water drawn out to be pumped while, in Direct Pumping cannot perform this
phenomenon.
 Pumping with storage is economical as pumping rate is set at maximum daily
instead of peak hourly flow in Direct Pumping.

2. The Minimum Residual Head value is maintained 20-21m in the water supply
network of above area so that water can reach to end consumer with sufficient
pressure and to meet the most critical demand node in water distribution
system under maximum demand.
If pressure is below the minimum residual pressure or negative then require
large diameter of pipe and hence flow of water decreases that’s why we have
to maintain the minimum residual pressure.

3. Provision of Air Valves is necessary after every 100-150m, Sluice Valves are
necessary on the suction of the pump.
