Astronomy I – Basics of Astronomy and the
Birth of the Universe

The course begins with the basic science of astronomy
and evolution of telescopes to the discovery of the big
bang creation of the universe, the development and life
cycle of the stars and sun, to their death in supernovas
and their remnants as white dwarfs and black holes.
The course is highly visual with the use of images from
the great ground-based and spaced-based telescopes
and videos/simulations from NASA, ESA and leading
universities.

Using ground based and space-based telescopes and
interplanetary space probes, the solar system’s forma-
tion, evolution, its major and minor planets, moons,
asteroids, comets, Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud will be
explored. Going beyond our immediate solar system,
distant galaxies, galaxy clusters, theories of dark mat-
ter and dark energy and the evolution of the universe
and possible multiverse will be examined. Finally, the
search for extraterrestrial life and intelligence will be
explored.
The Brain, Consciousness and
Artificial Intelligence

This course will review the human brain, its network
and functioning and the maintenance activities that
help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. We then explore the
nature and mysteries of consciousness and their lead-
ing current scientific theories. Lastly, we review prog-
ress in developing artificial consciousness and intelli-
gence and their potential benefits and dangers.

Want to learn about streaming alternatives to watch
local and cable networks? This class will review the
major companies that stream local stations and many
cable networks including major news, entertainment
and sports channels. We will review a comparison
of the four major applications that will allow you to
drop your cable and/or satellite services. It will also
include a list of stations provided by each company, the
equipment needed to stream, menu differences, cloud
DVR capabilities and costs. Please note that Internet
services provided by Cox or Zona are still required and
you should be familiar with streaming Netflix, Hulu, 3 or
other online viewing applications.

Travelers’ verbal and non-verbal essentials for a visit-
ing and enjoying ‘la belle France’. Cultural notes and
explanations will provide context for introductions,
directions, shopping, and restaurant encounters. Learn
words to say and words “not ever to repeat.” This class
will focus on the 25 most essential phrases for a stress-
free trip, encouraging proper pronunciation, providing
immediate feedback and practice. Beginners and those
with high-school French are welcome.
Get color and variety into your yard with Spring con-
tainer gardening to brighten your home and help pol-
linators (hummingbirds, butterflies and bees) survive
in the desert. How to select the right plants, locations,
soils, irrigation and suggested fertilizer options for suc-
cess. Specific designs for pots, along with recipes and
sizes to select will be covered. Container gardening for
our other States will also be briefly covered.

Captain James Cook the 250th Anniversary

Captain Cook was one of the most famous navigators
of the 18th Century and was responsible for a daz-
zling array of discoveries including continents, islands,
peoples, flora, and fauna plus an impressive array of
nautical aides.

This is a 4 session presentation;

Class 1: We will meet the man and learn about his early
life which led to his career as an officer in the British
Navy.

Class 2: The 1st Voyage of Discovery, to observe the

transit of Venus over Tahiti and then attempt to find
the great southern land (Australia) that was believed to
be in the South Pacific.

Class 3: The 2nd Voyage of Discovery, to find another

great landmass that many believe lay in the southern
oceans but further south than Australia.

Class 4. The 3rd Voyage of Discovery, to discover the

northwest passage around the top of Canada. He dis-
covered many Pacific islands and the northwest Cana-
dian and Alaskan coasts before being killed in Hawaii.

A further look into the early people of the Southwest.
We will discuss sites, not as well-known as Mesa Verde,
but closer, more accessible, and less crowded.
Their early attempts at pottery, and early examples of
jewelry. Take a look at the lives of the people at: Ban-
delier N.M., Puye Cliff Dwellings, Homol’ovi S.P., with
three distinct groups of people, the inhabitants of the
Painted Desert, and Casa Malpaís.
The Oregon Trail – Travel West with the
Pioneers

Take a three-day trip on the Oregon Trail. Decide on
what type of vehicle, the team you wish to use, what
you can put in your wagon, the amount of weight your
wagon can hold. Problems that occur along the jour-
ney, and 12 destination stops that have become famous
before you reach your goal.
The White House: The Building and the
Organization within

The White House: Why is it located where it is? Who
and how is life and work managed within those walls?
Conflicts and challenges of getting things done in
Washington or any place by the Federal Government is
not a shock. Considering how difficult it is to accom-
plish tasks in the nation’s capital, there are quite a few
stories about Generals wanting to demolish the pres-
ent White House. They had some good reasons. The
class will review historical as well as some unexpected
happenings in the White House. It came very close to
demolition at the end of World War II. Join the class
and find out why.
Secret Service

The Secret Service created to protect the President of
the United States. This organization is made up of an
elite corps of agents who pledge to take a bullet to pro-
tect the President and his family. This course will dis-
cuss some of the dangers of the job and how missions
are carried out. Assassination attempts on President
Truman, the devastating day Kennedy was killed, and
actions taken that saved President Reagan’s life. Plus,
some ways in recent days, cutting corners that are have
resulted in less than admirable situations.

The Beatles “The Making of Revolver”

This lecture will follow in the footsteps of The Beatles
as they redefine contemporary music, breaking bound-
aries by expanding the scope of pop and rock sounds,
as they create their timeless masterpiece - “Revolver.”
We will discuss the genesis of how the songs were con-
ceived and written, their musical influences, recording
and experimental studio techniques and the creation
of their legendary artwork cover sleeve. “Revolver”
is recognized as inspiring diverse subgenres of music
including electronica, baroque rock, and world music
among others.

time!
Bob Dylan Revisited

This lecture will travel on the road with Bob Dylan as
he navigates through the turbulent decade of 1960’s.
From his childhood in Minnesota, to folk troubadour
of Greenwich Village, to his ground-breaking trilogy
(“Bringing It Back Home” “Highway 61”, “Blonde on
Blonde”) to becoming the rock/poet enigma of his
time. Highlights from the post-60’s work (including
“Blood on the Tracks” to the American Songbook Tril-
ogy) will also be briefly explored. We will discuss his
extraordinary artistic achievements as a songwriter,
poet and cultural icon of the 20th century.

This lecture is the story of rock’s original “bad boys” as

we journey with them thru their formative years as a
cover band devoted to American blues, into their early
shows which dictated violence and chaos, thru their
notorious drug busts, personal and songwriting con-
flicts, and management and legal issues while earning
the reputation as the greatest rock n roll band with
classics from “Satisfaction” to “Brown Sugar”. For our
encore we will highlight some of their post 60’s work.

addition to effecting personal illumination and trans-
formation. It invites the reader to a response by asking

How many of us think about (and use) good Composi-

tion when you are setting up to take a photo? Good
Composition is what most photographers struggle to
achieve and end up with “Snapshots” and frustration.
This class is less about traditional “Rules”, more about
Guidelines, with lots of great photographs to empha-
size the point. This class is designed for beginners to
advanced Digital camera users who want to learn how
to capture better photographs.

Joseph Aibinder, B.S., M.S. is a Sun City Festival resident
and Del Webb scholar who served as a Connecticut high
school science teacher, a college advanced placement in-
structor, an adjunct professor at the University of Connecti-
cut, and as a NASA Endeavor Teaching Fellow.
Eric Brown, is a Sun City Festival resident who has over 50
years of experience playing the 10 diatonic harmonica. Eric
was born and raised in New York City and was fortunate
enough to be surrounded by a great musical environment
growing up. He is the author of eight self published books
and also performs a bit of magic.
Vincent Bruno is a Beatles Scholar and Sixties Rock Histo-
rian. He recently retired as Director of First Year Programs
at LaGuardia Community College. He holds an MPA from
Baruch College and has taught courses in Humanities, Busi-
ness, Mathematics and cooperative Education as an adjunct
professor for the past 25 years.
Doug Chatem, M.B.A., is a Sun City Festival resident and
community scholar who has over 40 years of experience in
information systems engineering and management. Doug’s
avocations include over twenty years of leading and teach-
ing boys and adults for the Boy Scouts.
Linda Cinnamond, B.S.N., Rn (retired) was a practic-
ing registered nurse for 38 years. She worked in hospitals
and clinics, as well as in the educational arena for several
major corporations and community colleges. She owned a
health club for over 10 years and has a special interest and
advanced certifications in Health and Wellness, Aromather-
apy, and Essential Oil Counseling. She is a Sun City Festival
resident and community scholar.
Digby Cook, Digby was born in Sydney, Australia and
embarked on a career in corporate finance. He earned his
B. Commerce from the University of NSW and in 1965 was
transferred by his American-based employer to their inter-
national headquarters in New York City. As VP of Interna-
tional Finance, he traveled worldwide including being based
in Brussels, Belgium for 6 years. In 1986 he was recruited by
New York Life Insurance to join their operations in Alaska.
He earned his CLU, ChFC, and LUTCF from the American
College in Philadelphia. Digby retired in 2009, and he and
Karen, his wife of 48 years, moved from Anchorage to Sun
City Festival in September 2010.
Lou-ellen Finter, Ph.D., has been in the educational field
for 50 years. She has taught musicology as well as been a
guest lecturer across the valley. She shares her passion for
Southwest Archeology and History in her classes.
MEET THE FACULTY
Jean-Marie Givens-Myers, B.A., is a Sun City Festival resi-
dent, a Del Webb Scholar, and a former adjunct instructor
for the Institute of Health and Healing in Newport News,
VA. She has taught classes incorporating energy healing and
meditation since 1995.
Nancy Haga has played Native Flute for 10 years, studying
under some of the finest recording artists in the field. A
Sun City Festival resident, she is a teacher and performer
and is the Director of the Solstice Native Flute School in
Park City, Utah.
John Hamilton, BASc., is a resident of Kelowna, BC, a Sun
City Festival resident and community scholar. His 37-year
career included work as a geophysicist, chief mine geologist,
and manager of exploration and acquisition evaluations,
traveling to all the continents except Antarctica. John is a
past President of the Geological Institute of Canada.
Robert F. Jeckel, J.D., has practiced law in Sun City for over
40 years and taught courses on various aspects of Ari-
zona and federal law for the ASU Osher Lifelong Learning
Program, the ASU Extended Campus, and in the Maricopa
Community College system.
Constance M. Kislan, MA in French as well as diplo-
mas from the University of Montpellier, France. Further,
I have a certificate fluency from the French Army, when I
attended the French Command and General Staff College
in Paris. I taught all undergraduate-levels of French for 4
years at Penn State University where I earned the “Lecturer
of the year award” in 1980; taught for NATO Confedera-
tion Interalliee des Officiers de Reserve between 2008 and
2013; Served as French linguist for the US Army. Training
in Education: My undergraduate degree was in Secondary
Education.
Carol Komassa (born in London, England) is a Sun City
Festival resident and spends her time between the desert
southwest and Wisconsin. Carol is an award winning free-
lance photographer, writer, and photography instructor at
the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix, and ASU, as well
as at The Cedarburg Art Museum in Wisconsin, the Weyen-
berg Library and two digital camera clubs in Arizona. Carol
is a Photography Coach and teaches on private photo walks,
workshops, classes and has gallery representations at The
Pink Llama Gallery in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. Her photog-
raphy articles have also been printed in the Ozaukee News
Graphic, Wisconsin.

Ann Lambert is a Certified Dog Trainer and American
Kennel Club (AKC CGC) Evaluator. Ann is canine educa-
tion instructor that specializes in Basic Training, Puppy
Training and Clicker Training. Ann is also the President of
the Sun City Festival Dog Club.
Raph Martin, M.A., has spent his career as a teacher –hav-
ing taught in high school, college, university, diocese, and
adult community education centers. He is also a lifetime
student –having studied theology at St. John’s University
in NYC and religious education (M.R.E.) at St. Michael’s
College/University in Toronto, Canada. He trained as a
Spiritual Director at the Institute for Spiritual Leadership at
Loyola University in Chicago and employs Ignatian/Jesuit
style approaches to spirituality in counselling and retreat
work. For the past 20 years he has worked in parishes of the
Diocese of Oakland, CA as adult faith formation coordina-
tor. He’s a native of NYC (Manhattan) and a recent retiree
in our Sun City Festival community.
Nancy Middlemas, M.A., is a Sun City Festival resident and
a community scholar. In her 37-year career as an educator,
she taught in Indiana, Georgia, and California, and retired
as curriculum coordinator for a national charter school,
developing diploma programs for at-risk youth.
Steve Miller, B.S., has been a Sun City Festival resident
since early 2007. He was a Principal in a large local CPA
firm located in Los Angeles and was a Chief Financial Of-
ficer for several companies after his move to Northern Cali-
fornia. He also started Barrel Buddies almost 10 years ago
and was a Neighborhood Representative for three years.
Carin Offerman is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer,
CPDT-KA, and competes successfully with her Giant
Schnauzer, Zelda, in National Association of Canine Scent
Work (NACSW) and AKC Scent Work Trials. Carin has
found that Nose Work has helped on blind retrieves when
duck hunting.
Allen Reamer, B.A., M.F.A., represents the fifth genera-
tion of a family of artists. He has completed 60 additional
graduate credits in art history and education and has taught
a variety of studio art and art history courses for 33 years
before coming to Arizona in 1999. During this time, he
was the president of a state art education association for
ten years and very active for a decade with the National Art
Education Association. He has been a member or chair of
various art related boards and has gratefully been recog-
nized in a variety of ways including art teacher of the year,
a fellowship to China, letters from President Clinton and
other elected officials, plus sells his paintings. Allen teaches
for ASU and a number of other educational institutions and
art organizations. He exhibits with his friends in the Neu
Art Group in Arizona.
MEET THE FACULTY
John Schneeg, B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and a Mas-
ters in Industrial Engineering, has lived in Sun City Festival
since 2007. John taught as lead faculty in Mechanical En-
gineering Technology at a community college in Michigan.
He had been a practicing engineer in industrial automation
prior to that, and has done engineering design consult-
ing and technical training for Honda America, the former
Chrysler Corporation, and La-Z-Boy Chair Company.
Barbara Waggoner has been a Festival resident since 2007
and has taught for Festival Learning since 2009. Her career
choice in law enforcement gave her personal insights on
safety techniques both as a female and Deputy Sheriff. She
taught personal safety classes for women and worked with
the senior population to help them avoid being a victim of
scams, fraud and violence. Barbara was part of her agen-
cies field training team and learned computers early on.
She tries to stay updated on everything Apple and finds this
operating system simple and safe for those wanting to stay
connected with family and friends afar, for social network-
ing, or just to read and learn.
Linda Wangner, B.A., M.A., is a Sun City Festival resident,
a community scholar and a retired New York state high
school teacher with 38 years of experience teaching Global
Studies, U.S. History and Government, as well as Law. Lin-
da has traveled to most of the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and
has developed an interest in researching background stories
related to various political events. She has been sharing her
knowledge on various topics for over five years through the
ASU program and now the Festival Learning program.
Alicia Weinkrantz, E-RYT, RPYT is a Sun City Festival
resident, and has been teaching yoga since 2010. She cur-
rently teaches Gentle Yoga and Chair Yoga at Sun City
Festival and is a Registered Yoga Teacher through Yoga Alli-
ance. She has many years in other forms of physical training
in the martial arts: Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Judo, but found
that Yoga fulfilled her needs of physical strength, flexibility,
energy and mental calmness.
Trevor Wilson is a Sun City Festival resident and a com-
munity scholar who spent his entire professional career as
a tour guide on trips throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Over this time, he has gained significant knowledge of the
“ins and outs” of the cruise, air travel, hotel and tour busi-
ness.
