What is Bitumen
Bitumen (also known as Asphalt) is a sticky, black, and highly
viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. It has water-
proofing and adhesive properties. Bitumen production
through distillation removes lighter crude oil components,
such as gasoline and diesel, leaving the “heavier” bitumen
behind. Bitumen is composed of complex hydrocarbons,
and contains elements such as calcium, iron, sulfur, and
oxygen.

It is a semi-solid hydrocarbon product produced by
removing the lighter fractions (such as liquid petro-
leum gas, petrol and diesel) from heavy crude oil
during the refining process. As such, it is correctly
known as refined bitumen.
