1.

When Jupiter, Lagna lord, 7th lord and 5th lord are without any

strength, there will be a denial of children or there will be

anapatya yoga.

2. When Sun, Mars, Rähu and Saturn are posited in the 5th house in

strength, while simultaneously the 5th lord and/or Jupiter are bereft of

any strength there will be anapatya yoga.

Paräçara in his primary analysis takes into account the afflictions

on the 5th house, the 5th lord and Jupiter, by Mars, Saturn and Rähu.

Jupiter is included here as it is the karaka for children and the 5th

house. He then takes the planet and the house associated with a

particular curse. The examination of Pitåçäpa would entail not only

the condition of the 5th house and its lord and Jupiter but also the Sun

and the 9th house and its lord. Similarly for the curse of the spouse,

the 7th house, 7th lord and karaka Venus are examined and so on. This

gives an indication that curses represent the severe affliction of a

house, its lord and its karakas by the three primary malefics, Mars,

Rähu and Saturn, resulting in the eventual destruction of the house

and its signification. Two aspects are highlighted, namely, the

strength or bala of the houses and the planets and secondly, the

affliction on the kärakatva of houses and planets.

Paräçara has identified the types of curses that one may bear from

one's past life in order to experience the sorrow of childlessness

in the present birth. These curses are as follows:

Paräçara gives certain combinations for these various curses which

are as follows:

Combinations for Sarpaçäpa (Curse of the Divine Serpents)

lord in the 12th.

Brahmaçäpa exhibits the weakness of Jupiter, afflicted by Rähu,

with the latter strongly placed in the lagna or trines. The ninth house

and lord, the karaka for gurus, teachers and priests also play a

prominent role in these combinations.

Patnéçäpa (Curse of Spouse)

1. Seventh lord in the 5th, Saturn in the 7th lord's

7th lords in the 8th house.

Understandably, the 7th house, its lord and käraka Venus is in focus,
but what stands out as a common factor is the placement of the 7th lord

in the 8th house.

Pretaçäpa (Curse of the Departed Spirits)

This occurs when the final rites have not been performed, and then the

forefathers bestow a curse in their form as spirits.

1. Saturn and the Sun in the 5th, feeble, waning Moon in the 7th

9. Seventh lord in a dusthana, Moon in the 5th and Saturn and

Mändi in lagna.

10. Twelfth lord in the 5th with Saturn and Venus and Jupiter in the

8th house.

These combinations of curses as given by Paräçara depict the

annihilation of a house and its signification. Such a destruction of a

house is done by the association of malefics, specifically, Mars, Saturn

and Rähu by their conjunction and aspect on the house, its lord and

its karaka. It is also done by the placement of the karaka and the lord

in dusthänas, and their association with dusthana lords, particularly

the 8th and the 12th houses and their lords, that is añöameça and

vyäyeça. One may refer back to the opening lines made by Çiva

that is the understanding of curses is to be done by analyzing the

strength of the bhäva. When the bhäva and its signification are

destroyed, it is bereft of any strength. It is interesting to note that

Paräçara here talks only about the association with malefics and the

link with dusthänas. Apart from mentioning debilitation a few times,

he has not referred to any other sources of strength. This leads one to

conclude, that the malefic association of Saturn, Mars and Rähu is

emphasized in the context of curses.

If one takes the principles expounded by Paräçara for the 5th house,

one may extend them to the other houses as well. Association of these

three malefic planets along with the dusthana lords with any bhäva

may destroy the signification of that bhäva and deny the fruits of

the same to the native. The table below suggests possible results of the

destruction of each of the twelve bhävas by applying the principles

of Paräçara.

Cursed Planets

Sri Jagannath Center[6] has done extensive work on curses and has

extended Paräçara's principles to other areas of life, such as

denial of marriage, home, profession, health etc. It has also extended

the concept of curses on houses as elaborated by Paräçara to that on

planets (discussed above), as has been taught in the parampara of Puri.

A curse from a past birth is depicted in the horoscope when a natural

benefic or a house is afflicted by at least two of the three natural

malefics, Mars, Saturn and Rähu by graha dåñöi. The reason for

taking graha dåñöi instead of räçé dåñöi is because a curse is

caused by an emotion and is the result of a desire to inflict harm and

difficulties upon another. The natural benefics are Jupiter, Moon, Venus

and Mercury. The Sun is included to show Pitåçäpa. The affliction of

these planets, following Paräçara, portrays the following curses:

Affliction on Planets

Jupiter

Brahmin

Brahmaçäpa

Moon

Mother

Mätåçäpa
Venus

Spouse

Patné/patiçäpa

Mercury

Uncle

Mätulçäpa

Sun

Father

Pitåçäpa

When any of these planets are aspected by two or more of the following

grahas, Mars, Saturn and Rähu, a curse is identified. Mars depicts

anger, Saturn sorrow and Rähu shock from deceit or illusion. The

house owned by these planets will show the areas of suffering, while the

involvement of the Ätmakäraka in the scenario ensures that the

curse will fructify and that it is complete and the torment severe. The

connection of the 8th house and its lord in this yoga confirms that the

curse is from a past birth, which can be re-confirmed with an

examination of the ñañöiäàça. The involvement of the

Ätmakäraka or the lagnädhipati shows that the curse will be

upon the individual.

Multiple curses can operate in a horoscope, of which one will be primary

and will yield maximum suffering, while the secondary curses will

manifest at certain specific times. The curse of the highest natural

benefic, that is Jupiter, usually depicts the primary curse, or the

involvement of the Ätmakäraka, or if all three malefics are

aspecting any of the natural benefics. Secondary curses do not exist

independently, and once the primary curse in forgiven, the secondary

curses are forgiven too. The remedy has to be done for the primary curse

only, as it is the root and will remove the negatives of the other

curses as well. One must also take into account other janma doñas,

like Amävasyä, Caturdaçé, and Saìkränti doñas as the

curse will afflict these doñas as well. Once the curse is lifted the

janma doñas will be alleviated.

Remedies

Curses require remedial measures to relieve the afflicted planet.

Paräçara has listed a set of remedies for each of the curses

mentioned earlier, but it must be remembered that one must first

ascertain whether the native is capable of doing the remedy. The ninth

house has to be examined for this purpose, which will reveal whether the

native has the bhägya or fortune to perform remedies which will

remove the affliction on the planet said to be under curse. Examine the

ñañöiäàça of the 9th lord which will give further indications

of the capacity of the person to undertake remedies. Information about

the correct remedy is very often not made available to the native with a

curse in his chart until the curse period is over. At times, when the

native is a very diligent worshipper of his iñöa devatä, the curse

may not take affect, or the suffering may be very minor.

Paräçara's remedies are as follows:

Sarpaçäpa

1. Establish a gold idol of Näga and worship him according to

the rituals followed in the native's house.

2. Cow, land, sesame and gold should be donated according to

one's capacity for the expansion of one's clan.

Pitåçäpa

1. Perform pitåçräddha at Gaya and feed a 1000

Brähmiës.

2. Kanyädän or give away a girl in marriage.

3. Donate a pregnant cow

Mätåçäpa

1. Bathe at Setubandha and chant the Gäyatré one lakh times.

2. Do grahadänam and feed milk to Brahmins from a silver bowl.

3. Do pradakñéna of a pepul tree and recite nämagäna 1008

times.

Bhrätåçäpa

1. Hear and chant (kirtaë) the names of Viñëu.

2. Perform Candräyaëa Vrata.

3. Bathe in the River Käveré and spend time with the

Vaiñëavas.
4. Plant a Pepul tree.

5. Donate 10 cows through he hands of one's spouse.

6. Donate land whilst wishing for children.

Mätulçäpa

1. Establish an idol of Viñëu.

2. Bathe at Setubandha and dig wells etc.

Brahmaçäpa

1. Perform Candräyaëa Vrata.

2. Do Brahmakåcha Sädhanä three times.

3. Donate cows along with dakñiëä.

4. Donate païca ratna (diamond, ruby, blue sapphire, emerald and

pearl) along with gold.

5. Donate rice 10,000 times.

Patnéçäpa

1. Give away a girl in marriage.

2. Donate a bejeweled and adorned idol of Lakñmé

Näräyaëa, 10 cows, beds and clothes. This has to be done both

the husband and the wife.

Pretaçäpa

1. Donate an idol of Brahma after performing rudrasnäna.

2. Donate cows, silver and blue vessels.

Müla Daça

The tool for timing the manifestation of the curse is Müla Dasa,

which is explained in detail by Säravalé. This is also known as

the Lagna Kendrädi Graha Daça and is a derivative of the

Vimçottaré. The daça commences from the strongest among lagna,

candra lagna and sürya lagna. This is specifically mentioned by

Säravalé and he also quotes Satyacärya on this principle. After

the daça of the kendras are complete, the daça of the

paëapharas and apoklimas take place. One must be careful in choosing

the planet which will deliver the curse, which is usually the most

malefic planet involved in the curse. Observe if a malefic is involved

in multiple curses, then it is that planet which will manifest the curses.

Translation: When irreligion is prominent in the family, O Krisna, the women of the family become polluted, and from the
degradation of womanhood, O descendant of Vrisni, comes unwanted progeny. (BG:1.40)

Dharma is examined in the ninth house and the one-ninth division of signs is called Navamsa. Parasara advises us to
examine this divisional chart (Navamsa) for spouse as it is the fruit/gains of Dharma. Thus the 11th sign from the 9th house
is the 7th house which shows gains/increase of Dharma and the 12th sign from the 9th house in the 8th house which shows
loss/decrease of Dharma. Thus, marriage indicates an increase of Dharma while widowhood symbolizes a destruction of
Dharma. In these tense in Hindu wedding the son-in-law is regarded as Vishnu as his coming to the family has led to an
increase in Dharma.

The Sun is a significator of Dharma and hence Maharishi Jaimini teaches that the Sun can never be a malefic for Upapada
(Arudha of 12th house symbolizing the Vivaha Mandapa[1]). Rahu is the greatest enemy of the Sun and causes its eclipse.
Thus Rahu symbolizes destruction of Dharma and also widowhood. Saturn is an enemy of the Sun and significator of the 8th
house (ruling widowhood/break in marriage) whereas Jupiter is a friend of the Sun and saves marriages by giving children.
In fact Chanakya[2] Niti[3] teaches that a person who is not desirous of having children should not marry. Venus (ruling
semen) shows sexuality and physical beauty whereas Mars shows the destruction of semen /preservation and indicates
Brahmacharya[4] thus Mars causes the first error (dosha) on the significator of natural procreation. Ketu is always opposite
to Rahu and both Parasara and Jaimini teach that it causes marriage. In fact it indicates the bestiality in man which is
controlled by worshipping Lord Shiva as Pasupati[5]. The Moon is a significator of mother hood and will surely give marriage
whereas Mercury the bastard son of the Moon indicates Adharma or children etc. born outside marriage and thus, obstructs
or break the purity of marriage relationship. Thus, Jaimini teaches that if Moon & Mercury are in mutual trines in the
Navamsa the character may fall and marriage vows maybe broken while if Mercury is aspected by Jupiter (the pure
representative of Vishnu) then purity prevails and marriage vows will be kept.

Scorpio is the natural eighth house of the zodiac and if Mercury & Venus are in Scorpio Navamsa then the person is of very
loose morals. In this manner the various rules/dictums given in the classical literature can be understood.

Illustrations
(Some Birth details are with held for obvious reasons)

Chart1: Female born on 31st January 1951.

Chart 1 is the Navamsa of a Lady born in a Brahmin family. The sixth Lord Mars is in the ninth house aspected by Rahu.
Rahu also eclipse the Sun and Moon in Lagna. Thus fall in Dharma is to occur. Ketu, signifying sexuality is in the seventh
house as the 7th Lord Jupiter and seventh house are both afflicted by Saturn (a dire malefic signifying and ruling the 8th
house). Both Venus and Mercury are in Scorpio (specific combination for Low morals). The second house from Navamsa
Lagna in Cancer aspected by Mars & Venus by Rasi drishti. Thus all planets point at one thing–fall of Dharma and excessive
uncontrolled sexuality. This Lady has lost all morals and has had all sorts of men in her life.

Chart 2 : Female born on 30th May 1954 at 7:40’ PM at Delhi, India.

In Chart 2 The Lagna is subject to Papakartari Yoga between Rahu, Mars and Saturn indicating a life of some kind of
bondage. The ninth Lord Moon is all placed in the sixth house showing a fall in Dharma. Venus in the 8th house is also very
evil for marriage. In the Navamsa Saturn is in Capricorn Navamsa aspected by Ketu (Rasi Drishti) indicating either adultery
or Tapaswi (Sanyasi) depending on whether Jupiter is strong. Jupiter is afflicted by Rahu’s aspect both in Rasi and
Navamsa and is placed in a Dusthana (8th & 12th) in both Rasi & Navamsa. Thus Jupiter is afflicted. In the Navamsa it is
under Papakartari Yoga between Saturn & Rahu. In female horoscopy Jupiter is the significator of husband and unless this
is strong, married life will not be present or not happy.
Venus is in the second house aspected by
Mars from the eighth showing ability (or talent!) for all kinds of sex. Both debilitated Moon and Mercury are in Scorpio
indicating excessive illegal sexuality and conjoined with Rahu shows the extensive nature of these activities. Her life is a sad
story of exploitation and rape finally leading to the infamous profession of prostitution.

VEDIC REMEDY

There are various remedial measures given for solving marriage problems like delay in marriage, divorce etc. Some of them
are very tamasic like black magic and others give temporary results. When it is clearly established that Dharma alone
protect the purity/marriage then the highest and surest remedy lies in increasing Dharma. Bhagwan Vishnu sits in the ninth
house of Dharma and worshipping him with the Astakshari mantra “OM NAMO NARAYANAYA” or meditating with the
mantra “ OM TAT SAT” is the best remedy. In addition, a gemstone of the Lord of ninth house (in Rasi Chart) and fasting on
days ruled by the Lord of Upapada can be prescribed.

OM TAT SAT

[1] Vivaha means marriage and mandapa means the place where this is solemnized through Vedic rituals.
[2] Kautilya better known as Chanakya was the able administrator and Minister of Chandragupta Maurya. His work on
administration named “Artha Shastra” is the greatest of of kind.
[3] Niti means code of conduct or behavior.
[4] celibacy
[5] Pasu: Animal; Pati: Lord; Thus pasupati means Lord of all animals including man

Maṅgalika Doṣa
Maṅgalika doṣa is a flaw of the energy processing system in the native. Mars (maṅgala)
represents agni tattva and when this is flawed, the energy gets directed to wrong purposes and
the result is terrible waste of both resources and time in addition to much suffering and pain.

It is interesting to note that the ancient seers did not attribute so much flaw to the placement of
other planets including Saturn as has been placed on the placement of Mars. This is because we
live in bhūrloka, the earth-plane and the devatā who is the guardian deity of this plane is ‘Agni’.
In jyotiṣa this translates to Mars as it represents Agni tattva. The planets representing the
guardians for the sapta-loka are in the order of the horā: Mars (bhūrloka), Sun (bhuvarloka),
Venus (svarloka), Mercury (maharloka), Moon (janarloka), Saturn (taparloka) and Jupiter
(satyaloka).

Defining Maṅgalika Doṣa

Maṅgalika Doṣa is an astrological combination that occurs if Mars (maṅgala) is placed in

specific houses in the horoscope. Ancient seers have listed five houses for maṅgalika doṣa as the
2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th bhāva. Astrologers of some traditions add the lagna as well while
others add lagna and remove the 2nd bhāva.

The reason why the ancient seers avoided the lagna was because of the dictum that any planet
placed in lagna ultimately becomes favourable as lagna is the seat of the praise-worthy one. Now
if we are going to praise Mars when it is placed in lagna, how can we do so if it is also causing
maṅgalika doṣa. An argument to the contrary would be that Saturn in lagna is very inauspicious
and the counter to that is the special condition of maraṇa kāraka sthāna. Since Saturn in lagna is
in maraṇa kāraka sthāna, it is inauspicious and this does not apply to any other planet. In fact,
Saturn is the only planet which gives good results when weak and when strong it can cause much
suffering and all the evils promised by it will be fully experienced in the lifetime. Therefore there
seems to be very sound logic in the ancients using only five houses viz. 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and
12th, for the definition of maṅgalika doṣa.

Maṅgalika Groups

Further, these houses are in two or three groups depending on viewpoint:

1. In the first viewpoint, there are two groups:

(A) Sukha (happiness) or śānti (peace) trikoṇa of 4th, 8th and 12th bhāva which becomes aśānti
trikoṇa bringing in irritation, agitation and conflict instead, and
(B) Śrīmanta bhāva consisting of 2nd and 7th houses which are naturally owned by Venus
(Taurus, Libra are the 2nd and 7th houses of nature). Venus is the naisargika Kalatra kāraka and
of jala tattva whereas Mars ruling agni tattva, destroys all that is so auspicious for saṁsāra
(worldly life) when in these 2nd or 7th houses.

2. In the second viewpoint, there are three groups:

(A) chaturaśra of 4th and 8th bhāva which are the pillars of home and health and Mars placed in
these houses can destroy properties and cause a person to wander like a vagabond
(B) śubha (auspicious) yoga of 2nd and 12th houses becomes aśubha (inauspicious) yoga with
Mars in these houses and the blessings of a clean intellect are lost to terrible conflict in
relationships in family and work
(C) maraṇa kāraka sthāna of Mars is the 7th bhāva where instead of love and enjoyments of this
bhūrloka (earth plane), destiny brings many battles to your door

Either way, together these are the 2nd, 7th, 4th, 8th and 12th houses. For a proper understanding
and application of maṅgalika doṣa, both these viewpoints have to be used and reconciled to see
the expression of results in life.

Therefore when Mars is in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th bhāva, the native has maṅgalika doṣa
which can make life on earth like a jail term. The native feels very trapped in circumstances
related to the bhāva in question and this impacts personal life as the tendency is to blame ones
dear ones for all the maladies of life. Such an attitude results in great suffering for the spouse as
well and estrangement by divorce, death or abandonment occurs.

Maṅgalika Chandra Lagna

Please note that the maṅgalika doṣa from the Moon sign is slightly different. It includes the 1st,
7th, 4th, 8th and 12th houses where the 2nd is replaced by the 1st house. Planets in the 2nd bhāva
from the Moon are considered very auspicious as they herald good fortune whereas Sasi-
Maṅgala yoga of Moon-Mars is a Rudra yoga bringing in much strife in personal life leading to
an adulterous behaviour. Such natives have multiple relationship.

Brahma & Maheswara in Ayur Jyotisha

- June 28, 2004

INTRODUCTION

Brahma and Maheswara are two key concepts in Ayur Jyotisha. We know that in Hindu Pantheon, the Trinity, Brahma,

Vishnu and Maheswara Create, Protect/ sustain and Annihilate respectively. Thus the concept of Brahma as creater and

Maheswara as the liberator are used in some key Ayur Dasas such as Brahma, Sthira, Shoola dasa etc. Though their

importance is high, many do not venture into finding them as they turn out to be little complecated. I tried to make this little

easire to understand and compute. With hardwork and patience, this can be learnt and applied in Ayur Jyotisha.

BRAHMA

Yagyam is the worship or praise for Prajapati the progenitor. This is the fourth principle of Jyotish and is called Lagna or the

ascendant representing the seat of Prajapati the progenitor and the ‘praise worthy one’. He is the (physical) creator of all

beings and is a form of Brahma. He is praised with the Gayatri mantra for His excellent service to all creation. (Pt. Sanjay

Rath)

One among these six planets (Sun to Venus) will represent Brahma the creator, in the horoscope. Saturn being the Ayus

Karaka and having Brahma as his deity[i] cannot represent Brahma. The nodes do not have a physical body and cannot

contribute one, besides they are actually demoniacal and have become immortal due to their ‘drinking of the amrita’

clandestinely at the time of the churning of the primordial ocean. (Pt. Sanjay Rath)

Saturn is the deity of Brahma and is the karaka for the Dusthana. Thus the calculation of the Brahma involves finding out the

stronger among the three dusthana lords namely, 6th, 8th, 12th lord based on thier placement in odd and visible signs. The

predominance of Odd and Visible signs indicate towards the masculine energy and the power to create. If however, the

condition of Odd and visible signs are not fulfiled, the Visibility condition is dropped and if even the odd-sign condition fails,
the condition gets modified to odd-house placement.

THE 8TH LORDSHIP IS ALWAYS SEEN IN REGULAR ORDER FOR DETERMINATION OF BRAHMA, RUDRA or

MAHESWARA AND NOT AS PER THE VRIDDHA'S PRINCIPLE OF EIGHTH HOUSE RECKONING.

STEPS TO IDENTIFY BRAHMA

RIDER: If the lord of the eighth house from the Atmakaraka is placed in the eighth house itself, it disqualifies to be the

Maheswara, and instead becomes the Brahma overriding all previous conditions for Brahma determination.

1. Determine the stronger between the lagna and seventh house as per sources of strength and call this dominant satya

peetha.

Follow the following steps to determine the stronger of 1st or 7th.

i. The sign aspected by more planets becomes stronger.

ii. The sign placed with exalted or the sign lord becomes stronger.

iii. The sign aspected by the sign lord, Jupiter or Mercury becomes stronger.

iv. The sign whose lord is placed in sign with different oddity becomes stronger. For example if the sign under consideration

is Even, and the lord is placed in Odd then it is stronger than if the lord has been placed in the even sign.

v. The sign whose lord has more longitude is stronger.

2. Identify the lords of the 6th, 8th & 12th houses from the dominant satya peetha. Remember to consider the co-lordship of

Aquarius (Rahu) and Scorpio (Ketu) if these signs are involved.

3. Check whether any of these lords are

i. Placed in an odd sign and

ii. placed in the visible half of the zodiac from the dominant satya peetha. The visible half of the zodiac constitutes the signs

from the 7th to 12th house (the signs which are above the horizon).

4. If more than one planet becomes Brahma, check the stronger of them to qualify for Brahma. However, if none of the 6th,

8th or 12th lord from the dominant satya peeta, are placed in the odd & visible sign, then move to the weaker satya peeta

and check the conditions for the 6th, 8th and 12th lord therefrom.
5. If none satisfy the odd & visible sign placement, drop the "visible sign" condition. Now check again from the Dominant

Satya Peetha, if the lords of 6th/8th/12th placed in odd signs. If this fails, move to the weaker Satya Peetha and check the

placement of 6th/8th/12th lord in Odd sign.

6. If all the lords (6th/8th/12th), from both satya peetha are placed in Even signs, then the placement of 6th/8th/12th lord in

Odd "Houses" need to be checked from the Dominant Satya Peetha and if this condition is not met, the same is checked

from weaker satya peetha.

7. If two or more planets contend for the position of Brahma, then the strongest should be declared as Brahma.

8. Should any of the three planets Saturn, Rahu or Ketu qualifies for the position of Brahma , then the sixth planet from it, in

the order of the reckoning of the weekdays, becomes Brahma.

i. If Saturn qualifies as Brahma , then replace Saturn with Mars.

ii. If Rahu qualifies as Brahma , then replace Rahu with Mercury.

iii. If Ketu qualifies as Brahma , then replace Ketu with Jupiter.

MAHESWARA

There are Ekadas (11) rudras in a horoscope, each being the lord of 8th from each of the signs excluding the one which is

conjoined with Jupiter. Among them, the lord of the 8th house from the sign occupied by Atmakaraka has the higest status

among the Rudras and is called Mahesvara.

The Bhagwat Gita also indicates this difference when Sri Krishna says, ”amongst the rudras I am çaìkara (or mahesvara)”.

The philosophical difference is that each of the other ten rudras simply destroys the body whereas Mahesvara liberates the

soul (atma) by delivering it from the cycle of rebirth to the highest spiritual plane. (Pt. Sanjay Rath)

RIDERS:

1. If the 8th lord from Atmakaraka is exalted or in own sign, the lord of the 8th/12th from it, whichever is stronger, becomes

Mahesvara. This is based on the principle that the 8th lord in exaltation or in own sign loses its sting to kill and delegates the

power to another i.e. the lord of the 8th/12th from the sign where it is placed.

2. If Rahu or Ketu becomes Mahesvara then the sixth planet counted in the weekday order becomes the Mahesvara.
Rahu is replaced by Mercury

Ketu is replaced by Jupiter

3. If Rahu or Ketu is in the 1st/8th from Atmakaraka the sixth lord respectively becomes Mahesvara. Here we most note that

the sixth house is the 8th counted in the reverse direction from Atmakaraka due to Rahu & Ketu.

Note: A planet who is qualified to become Brahma is disqualified to become Maheswara. This can happen if the 8th lord

from Atkakaraka is in own house in 8th. For such case, the 8th lord becomes Brahma, over-riding all conditions of Brahma

determination. However for Maheswara, we need to look at the 8th/12th lord from the disqualified Maheswara (in the

previous step).

Dvādaśāṁśa and grandparents

Grandparents, both maternal and paternal are examined from the dvādaśāṁśa. The paternal
grandparents are seen from the 9 (father) and 4 (mother) houses from the ninth house which are
th th

the fifth house (paternal grandfather) and twelfth house (paternal grandmother) as well as the
same houses from the natural significator Jupiter (paternal grandparents) or the parents houses
(9 and 4 houses) from the pitṛkāraka (father).
th th

The maternal grandparents are seen from the 9 (father) and 4 (mother) houses from the fourth
th th

house (mother) which are the twelfth house (maternal grandfather) and seventh house (maternal
grandmother) as well as the same houses from the natural significator Venus (maternal
grandparents) or the parents houses (9 and 4 houses) from the mātṛkāraka (mother).
th th

The naisargika kāraka for paternal grandparents is Jupiter (and Ketu according to some). The
fifth house from Jupiter is to be examined for the description of paternal grandfather. To study
the soul level attachment to the paternal grandfather we have to examine the ninth house (father)
from the cara pitṛkāraka.Similarly, to have a description of the maternal grandfather we have to
examine the 12 house (maternal grandfather) from Venus (significator). To study the soul level
th

attachment to the maternal grandfather we have to examine the ninth house (father) from the cara
mātṛkāraka. This system of identification may not work in other charts if the grandparent has not
had a profound impact on the life of the native.

D12: Grandparents Presentation

Dvādaśāṁśa: Parents
Dvādaśāṁśa devatā

Gaṇeśa, Dasra (Aśvinī Kumar), Yama and Ahi (Sarpa) repeating three times, in that order are the
four devatā of the dvādaśāṁśa.

Devatā Dvādaśāṁśa based on longitude in any sign

Gaṇeśa 1 0°00’- 2°30’ 5 10°00’- 12°30’ 9 20°00’- 22°30’
Dasra (Aśvinī Kumar) 2 2°30’- 5°00’ 6 12°30’- 15°00’ 10 22°30’- 25°00’
Yama 3 5°00’ – 7°30’ 7 15°00’ – 17°30’ 11 25°00’ – 27°30’
Ahi (Sarpa) 4 7°30’ – 10°00’ 8 17°30’ – 20°00’ 12 27°30’ – 30°00’

{tab=Roots}
Basic relationship with Parents
The four devatā show the basic relationship of the native with parents.

Gaṇeśa
Gaṇeśa is the darling son of Gouri (Pārvatī of or the mother goddess) who was created from mud
in the absence of his father. The mother was enamored by the beauty of Gaṇeśa and asked Hein
to guard the door and not to allow anyone inside when she was bathing Lord Śiva the spouse
approached the door and wanted to meet the mother. Gaṇeśa objected as He was unaware that
Śiva was his father. A battle ensued between Gaṇeśa and the hordes of Śiva. The hordes were
defeated and in anger, Śiva drew the trident and cut off the head of Gaṇeśa. On hearing the
clamor, the divine mother came out of the bath and was aghast to see the fate of her darling son.
She insisted on his rebirth /reincarnation. Lord Śiva obliged and asked the attendants to travel in
four directions. The group traveling north found a dead elephant and brought its head. Lord Śiva
attached the head to the lifeless trunk and uttered the saṇjīvani mantra. Gaṇeśa came back to life
and became the ‘first worshipped’ among the host of gods and goddesses.

It is evident that “Gaṇeśa” dvādaśāṁśa implies a strong attachment to mother and differences
with father. These differences are resolved if the wisdom of the ‘elephant head’ works, else
battle ensues battle the child and father. Outbursts and quarrels with father became a part and
parcel of the relationship as a means to solving problems.

We may denote Gaṇeśa dvādaśāṁśa as f (-) m (+) indicating a ‘minus’ with father and a ‘plus’
with mother.

Dasra (Aśvinī Kumar)

Saṅjñā the wife of Sun God Sūrya had decided to seek some time off from the daily rigor of life
as she was unable to bear the heat of the blazing god. She went to the house of her father and left
her shadow Chāyā behind to run the household. Little did she know that Chāyā would deceive
her and start an illicit relationship with Sūrya in her absence due to the stark similarity between
the two. When Sūrya failed to turn up at her father’s residence to take her back, she felt slighted
and turned herself into a mare. When the truth was exposed to Sūrya by his ardent son Yama, he
banished Chāyā and searched the seven worlds for Saṅjñā. On finding her masquerading as a
mare, he decided to become a stallion and woo her love. The offspring of their love and mating
were the Aśvinī Kumar (a.k.a Dasra).

Aśvinī Kumar of Dasra dvādaśāṁśa indicates that the native equally loves both parents, and is
generally duty bound. We may denote this as f (+) m (+).
Yama
When Saṅjñā wanted to visit her parents she asked her shadow Chāyā (lit. shadow or image) to
stay behind and serve Sūrya. Being the exact replica of Saṅjñā, Sūrya mistook her as his spouse
and made love. Yama the elder son of Sūrya (from Saṅjñā) was aware of the truth and detested
Chāyā, the step mother. Chāyā gave birth to Kāla (lit. time and also darkness). Unable to bear the
deceit, Yama spoke the truth about the unholy union to Sūrya and to prove his point went and
kicked Chāyā. Infuriated at his misbehavior Chāyā cursed Yama to become lame. Sūrya
immediately realized that Yama was speaking the truth as no son can have so much hatred to
kick the mother. He blessed Yama to be ‘dharma rāja’ and gave him the power to punish all
those who indulge in deceit or untruth. He banished Chāyā and went to fetch Saṅjñā.

Kāla became the curse of Chāyā on Yama and sat on his head. The left leg of Yama gradually
deteriorated and he became lame and limped around in a slow painful gait. This slow moving
painful state of Yama is symbolic of Śani (Saturn).

Truth can be painful and those who live truthful and dharmic lives often have to bear the burden
of other sinful ones they associate with. Yama dvādaśāṁśa indicates sorrow (sometimes due to
parents). The native will surely standby his father and will not like his mother or may disagree
with her on various issues. We may denote Yama as F (+) M (-).
Sarpa
Sarpa or snake indicates the unfaithful one who, largely out of fear or self-preservation or other
selfish interest denounces parents. Generally indicates one who is very independent and does not
obey parents in youth, may stay away from them and/or may not maintain cordial relationship
with them. We may denote the Sarpa dvādaśāṁśa as F (-) M (-).

Summing up, the four dvādaśāṁśa types indicate the four permutations of relationship with
parents. On the one extreme we have Aśvinī Kumar who are F (+) M (+) and on the other
extreme we have Ahi (Sarpa) who are F (-) M (-). In between these extremities we have Gaṇeśa
F (-) M (+) and Yama F (+) M (-).

Application and preliminary examination

The lagna shows the intelligence of the native while the pāka lagna (sign/degree occupied by the
lagna lord) shows applied intelligence. The difference being the immediate natural reaction to
any stimuli comes from the lagna and this is done without any application of wisdom while
application of wisdom (Jupiter the significator of wisdom is also the significator of pāka lagna) is
done through the pāka lagna where the individual weighs the pros and cons and based on his
learning or understanding of a situation, takes concrete action. Similarly we have the lords of the
ninth house representing father and that of the fourth house representing mother that act as the
pāka lagna for parents.

The first step in delineating the relationship of the individual towards parents and vice-versa is to
determine the dvādaśāṁśa devatā of the lagna, pāka lagna, the fourth lord and the ninth lord of
the rāśi chart. The devatā of the lagna shows the basic instinct of the native towards both parents
while that of the pāka lagna shows the changes brought about through experience, learning and
application of thought.

The second step is to examine the lord of the 4th house and 9th house that shows the attitude of
the mother and father respectively.
Finally, planets in the 4 /9 house show changes in attitude and relationship of mother or father
th th

due to the influence of life events indicated by the planets in these houses. It is good for the ninth
lord (Father) to be in Dasra (Aśvinī Kumar) or Yama dvādaśāṁśa as then the father is favorable
while if in Gaṇeśa dvādaśāṁśa, father considers the child to be too much of a hindrance and if in
Ahi (Sarpa) dvādaśāṁśa, father considers the child to be a snake in the family. Similarly, it is
good for the fourth lord (Mother) to be in Dasra (Aśvinī Kumar) or Gaṇeśa dvādaśāṁśa. If in
Yama dvādaśāṁśa, mother will hate and consider the child to be a curse and if in Ahi (Sarpa)
dvādaśāṁśa, mother will consider the child to be a sinner and will ignore it.

The dvādaśāṁśa devatā gives us a fine idea of what the basic relationship is with parents as well
as how this can be modified with time due to the presence of planets in lagna, fourth or ninth
house. However this cannot be taken as the final word on the relationship with parents. This
method cannot give us details about how the relationship is modified on a regular basis with
passing time. The dvādaśāṁśa chart is a much better indicator of the subtle aspects of the
relationship and the Vimśottari daśā clearly shows the changes in relationship and fortune of
parents.
{tab=D12 Rules}
Dvādaśāṁśa chart & father
Details about ones parents can be studied from the dvādaśāṁśa chart which also gives their
nature, fortunes and the influence they have on the life of the native.

1. Specifically, the ninth house from lagna in the dvādaśāṁśa chart should be treated as the
lagna of father and all the details about his life, karma and death should be studied form
this lagna.
2. Results of the ninth lord in different houses –
3. If the ninth lord is in lagna or lagneśa in the ninth house, then the father may not be long
lived and the native may have to take the responsibilities of father at a young age. The
pitåkāraka in Leo or Pisces (eighth sign from Leo) also indicates early death of father and
various responsibilities on that account.
4. The ninth lord in the fourth house (eighth from ninth house) gives a despicable father
who will forever be troubled due to various ñaḍripu. This need not happen if it is well
conjoined while malefic planets conjoining the ninth house or the ninth lord will indicate
adverse results for father’s character or nature.
5. If the ninth lord is in the seventh house then the native will, forever oppose the father or
if a benefic and well disposed to the lagna, he gets the support of father for marriage and
business. Ninth lord in the sixth house can show a hardworking father. The tenth house is
the wealth of the father and a connection between the lagna and tenth house or lord and
the ninth lord can show pursuing a career like father.
6. Eighth house is the 12 (expenses/giving away) for father and the inheritance for the
th

native.

Dvādaśāṁśa and mother

The fourth house and lord indicates the biological mother. Malefic planets in this house can show
neglect by mother and the 4 lord placed in duṣthāna can show bad relationship with mother,
th

especially if it is also in ṣaḍāṣṭaka (mutual 6/8) or dvirdvādasa (mutual 2/12) with the lagna lord.
The cara mātṛkāraka in a duṣthāna, especially the 6 house can indicate very adversely for
th
mothers health. The mātṛkāraka in Cancer or Sagittarius is generally considered inauspicious for
mother and unless other alleviating factors are present it can mean separation from mother or her
early death.

Note on adoption
Adoption by another mother is confirmed if there is a malefic planet in the fourth house. The
adopting mother is to be seen from the 11 house in the dvādaśāṁśa chart if the adoption is being
th

done after the death (11 house is 8 from the 4 house) of mother. If the adoption is done while
th th th

the mother is alive then this is seen from the 9 house which is the 6 house (service or growth)
th th

from the 4 house ruling mother. If the rāśi chart also has these indications then adoption is sure
th

to occur. Formal or legal adoption needs the stamp of approval of Jupiter and this must aspect the
concerned house in the dvādaśāṁśa chart.

Inheritance from mother

The eighth house is seen for all inheritance in general and specifically, the third house being the
12 (giving) from the 4 house (mother) shows the inheritance from mother. What we are looking
th th

for in the dvādaśāṁśa is (1) a link between the 2 house (wealth) and 8 house (inheritance) to
nd th

guarantee the inheritance. (2) A link between 3 house and 8 house to show that this inheritance
rd th

(8 house) is a partly or wholly obtained from what the mother gives (3 house). (3) Moon the
th rd

significator for mother associated with the 8 house and (4) the 8 lord not averse to allowing the
th th

inheritance to happen.

The presentation explains all this and gives a detailed analysis about parents.

Dvādaśāṁśa Concepts
Dvādaśāṁśa mapping

The first dvādaśāṁśa of every sign which extends from 0°00’- 2°30’ of every sign, is mapped
into the same sign. For example, the first dvādaśāṁśa of Aries is mapped into Aries and is lorded
by Mars the lord of Aries or the first dvādaśāṁśa of Leo is mapped into Leo and is lorded by the
Sun, lord of Leo. The second dvādaśāṁśa (2°30’ – 5°00’) of every sign is mapped into the
second sign from it. For example, the second dvādaśāṁśa of Aries is mapped into Taurus which
is the second sign from Aries. Thus, a planet placed at 3°15’ Aries will be in the second
dvādaśāṁśa (i.e. within the range of 2°30’ to 5°00’) and will be placed in Taurus in the
dvādaśāṁśa chart (D12 chart).

Dvādaśāṁśa Chart

A chart drawn with all the nine planets, lagna (and special ascendants etc) mapped into their
dvādaśāṁśa signs is called the dvādaśāṁśa chart and is denoted as the D12 chart.

Use of dvādaśāṁśa and significators

Parāśara advises that the dvādaśāṁśa should be examined for elders (including parents and
grandparents). The first focus is on Parents – biological father and mother and then on step
parents like step father(s) or step mother(s). Thereafter we shall study both patrilineal and
matrilineal grandparents.

Father and mother significators

Sun and Venus are the fixed significators (sthira kāraka) for father and are studied for the health
and longevity of father. Moon and Mars are the fixed significators for mother and are studied for
the health and longevity of mother.

In addition, Sun is the natural significator of father (as the giver of dharma) and Moon is the
natural significator of mother (as she creates the body). A severely afflicted Moon in the rāśi
chart can show mental suffering on account of a curse of mother from a previous incarnation and
in this life there can be considerable suffering on account of mother. The lord of the fourth house
from the Moon and the ninth house from the Sun brings ones mother and father respectively.

The fourth house from the dvādaśāṁśa lagna is treated as the lagna of mother and the ninth
house is treated as the lagna of father.

Step parents

Relationship with parents is dependant on the time of birth. If birth is during the day (i.e.
between sunrise and sunset) then the Sun is the significator of father and Venus is the
significators of mother whole the Moon and Saturn are the significators of aunt and uncle. In the
case of night birth, Moon and Saturn are the significators of mother and father while Venus and
Sun show aunt and uncle respectively. In the case of death of a parent or separation between
parents the significators of uncle and aunt will be the significators of the step parents.

Grandparents

Grandparents are also seen in the dvādaśāṁśa chart. Treating the ninth house and the constant
significator (generally Sun) of father as the ascendant, the ninth thereof is the paternal
grandfather and fourth from it is the paternal grandmother. Thus the fifth house being the ninth
(father) from the ninth house (father) is treated as the ascendant of paternal grandfather and
twelfth house being the fourth (mother) from the ninth house (father) is treated as the ascendant
of paternal grandmother. Similarly the fourth house or the constant significator of mother
(generally Moon) is treated as the ascendant of mother to determine the maternal grandparents.
The seventh house being the fourth (mother) from the fourth house (mother) is treated as the
ascendant of the maternal grandmother and the twelfth house being the ninth (father) from the
fourth house (mother) is treated as the ascendant of the maternal grandfather.
Jupiter is the natural significator of paternal grandparents whereas Venus is the natural
significator of maternal grandparents. Thus, in the dvādaśāṁśa chart, the 5 house from Jupiter is
th

seen for relationship with paternal grandfather and the 12 house from Jupiter brings one closer
th

to paternal grandmother. Similarly the 7 house from Venus brings one close to the maternal
th

grandmother and twelfth house from Venus shows the affection with maternal grandfather.

Summary

The following houses emerge as the ascendants of parents and grandparents –

 4 house: Mother
th

 9 house: Father
th

 5 house: Paternal grandfather

th

 12 house: paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather

th

 7 house: maternal grandmother

th

All readings can be made from the position of planets from these houses. For example, the sixth
house being the tenth from the ninth house shows the vocation of father while the fourth lord in
the ninth house shows a mother diligently following the father in this life and a happy home on
this account at least. The āruḍha of the fourth and ninth houses in the dvādaśāṁśa chart are
examined to see details about the parents’ families whereas the āruḍha in the rāśi chart are used
for various general purposes. For example, the āruḍha of the fourth house (sukha pada or A4) in
the rāśi chart shows the influences at home and a strong Venus influence shows that the mother’s
family is strong and wealthy and has a stronger say than the fathers family. On the other hand a
strong Jupiter influence shows a very influential fathers family having a stronger say on home
affairs.

Dasāṁśa Yoga

The dasamsa should be analyzed in detail independently like the Rasi Chart. The artha (Artha:
Finance, money) trikona is composed of the 2 , 6 & 10 house. Planets in these houses will have
nd th th

a direct bearing on the functioning of the native. Any planet in the tenth house is independently
capable of giving good yoga that could mean power, rise and success in ones career. In addition,
the seventh house should also be studied, as it is the pada to the tenth. If the Sun dominates in
these houses, a political career or similar public service is indicated. Mars gives Police,
intelligence-related activities, Army etc., Jupiter produces lawyers, Judges, Priests, Astrologers,
etc., Mercury gives business, writing & publishing, trade etc., Venus gives entertainment and all
works of beauty while Saturn gives burden, menial jobs etc. Rahu can indicate imports while
Ketu shows exports etc.
{tab=Bhava}
The tenth house deals with prosperity & growth (significator: Jupiter), karma including all
works, actions (significator: Saturn), professions & career (significator Mercury), fame
(significator Sun). It represents the mid-heaven and plays a vital role in the chart, second in
importance only to the ascendant Low astakavarga bindu in this house can considerably weaken
a chart All planets in the tenth house generally give very good results. Even Rahu gives
pilgrimages if in the tenth in the natal chart or from the Narayana dasa sign. Houses, whose lords
are in the tenth house, gain considerable strength and the activities ruled by them succeed. The
tenth house has argala on the 6 , 7 , 9 & 12 houses thereby directly affecting the matters ruled
th th th th

by these houses such as enemies, servants, fortune, sleep and other matters as well. For example,
Chanakya (alias Kautilya is the famous author of Arthashastra, a treatise on politics and
government.) says that a king can never fall if his servants are faithful. If the servants are
faithful, the sixth house is favorable and the enemies also ruled by the sixth house cannot win.
This automatically affects the status ruled by the tenth house. Similarly, success automatically
brings more business and associates, besides keeping the spouse happy. Ones boss, guru, or lady
luck ruled by the ninth house does matter in ones career. The 12 house rules final emancipation
th

and meditation. Bad actions in the tenth house will reflect adversely on the 12 house
th

and moksha will be denied in the long term while sleep could be adversely hampered in the short
term. A fine solution to this negative cycle would be to take up transcendental meditation (TM).
The 11 , 1 , 2 , & 8 house have argala on the 10 house or are capable of affecting the actions and
th st nd th th

other matters ruled by the tenth house. Thus gains, self & net profit or loss will influence
decisions and actions. If an exalted or strong natural benefic is in the ascendant, the native will
be guided by its ideals and this will have a strong impact on his decisions & action. In this
manner, the argalas and their obstruction should be understood.

The fifth house is the eighth from the tenth house representing birth (beginning) and longevity
(time of implementation) of an action (10 house). Thus, the fifth house rules authority and
th

power that one enjoys due to skills & knowledge as well as one’s Purva Punya. The timing of
joining a new job is done from the fifth house. Rajayogas also need to be confirmed in the
Panchamamsa (D-5 Chart) and the Dasamsa (D-10 chart). The eleventh house from ascendant is
the ‘Hara’ or end of life. Similarly the eighth house being the eleventh from the tenth house is
the place of retirement or end of career. The eighth house, if beneficially disposed, can give huge
loans to take up large enterprises and its argala on the 7 & 10 house can give a new boost to
th th

one’s business. If ill disposed, one’s business will run into endless debt and ruin. The following
points below may be borne in mind while analyzing the dasamsa.

The Sixth house rules service and the seventh house rules business. If there are more planets in
the sixth house, or it is otherwise stronger, service is indicated. A stronger seventh house gives a
business enterprise. Similarly, the sixth lord promotes service while the seventh lord promotes
business. This could mean instability in service during the period of the seventh lord. Similarly,
debilitated malefic in the seventh house will encourage service and damage the business.

The boss is seen from the ninth house while the subordinates are seen from the fifth house.
During the period of a malefic planet having papargala (malefic obstruction) on the ninth house,
one is tormented by the boss (or ex-boss) while a benefic having subhargala (benefic
intervention) shall give a very good and helpful boss. Thus, in charts showing any kind of
employment, the concerned houses for the self are the first, 6 & 10 . The third house from these
th th

(3 , 8 & 12 ) can cause problems. The eight house will show retirement; the third house shows
rd th th

short leave while the 12 house shows long leave.

th

The ascendant lord in the ninth house makes a person very independent (he likes to be his own
boss) and business is best advised in such charts or employment with a lot of scope for
independent work. The second house is the eighth from the seventh house and shall play a
crucial role in starting any business. In simpler words, the starting of any business is determined
by the finance available. The quadrants to the 2 house are the 5 , 8 & 11 houses showing the
nd th th th

money that is put in by the partner, loans from banks etc. and self respectively.

1 Planets in the tenth house generally always give good results. The Sun and Mars that get
direc¬tional strength in the tenth house can be a great blessing in any chart providing dynamism
and suc¬cess. The Sun indicates pride, respect, position, sta¬tus, responsibility, independent
views, and help from politicians and senior officers. The Moon shows fluc-tuation of fortunes
and success in public dealings, water or liquids, emotional views and changeable of work etc.
Saturn indicates rapid rise and fall, hard work. Ketu indicates routine job. In this manner, the
standard texts provide considerable information on the results of the planets in the tenth house
based on the nature of the planet.

2 The second basis is to see the relationship of the planet on the houses it has argala on. If the
Sun or Jupiter is in the tenth house, the argala on the ninth house is very favorable and will
promote father, guru and good fortune. This will simultaneously destroy the evil effects of
malefic planets in the ninth house. If Rahu or Saturn is in the tenth house, it will have papargala
on the ninth house and the father/guru will have to suffer. Saturn will cause many downturns in
fortune and life will be a battle of sorts. However, Saturn will have subhargala on the 12th house
of which it is a significator and the native could learn spiritual practices like Pranayama that will
be very beneficial. Ketu in the 10th house will also have papargala on the ninth house but it will
have a subhargala on the 12th house of final emancipation (ketu is mokshakaraka). This will lead
the native into the spiritual path and teach meditation etc. Malefic planets in the tenth have
papargala on the sixth house and can destroy the signification of the sixth house. For example, if
Ketu is in the tenth house, it could be very malefic for dogs and such pets while Saturn can create
many enemies. Mercury or Venus in the tenth house can be a blessing for business. However,
Ketu or Mercury in the tenth will make the native very fickle minded.
3 The third basis is to consider the houses having argala on the planet in the tenth house. The
ascendant has sukhargala (interven¬tion for creating happiness) on the tenth house. If the planet
in the ascendant is friendly to the planet in the tenth house, then the native has job satisfaction,
and if inimical, there will be a lot of dissatisfaction. Thus the argala of the ascendant on the tenth
house can promote or damage the prospects of the tenth house because of personal desires and
whims. The eleventh house has dhanargala (wealth intervention) on the tenth house. Thus,
incentives like bonus can make a dent on the performance. For example, if Rahu is in the
eleventh house the results of one’s actions will come suddenly while Saturn will delay the fruits.
Retro¬grade planets can even deny the fruits of the actions until they become direct in transit.
The eighth house has labhargala on the tenth house. Thus, it determines the end of a work or
career. The eleventh house from any bhava has the responsibility of finishing it. This has been
aptly stated by Maharishi Jaimini in the stanza Tanou tana danda hara meaning the sixth is the
house of punishment and the sixth from the sixth (11th house) is the destroyer (Hara). There are
neither real enemies nor any real diseases in this illusionary world. These are only means for the
Lord to punish us for our sins. People born on Shasta tithi (the sixth day of the waxing/waning)
lunar cycle or during the period of planets in the sixth house from ascendant or the dasa sign, can
suffer many problems due to enemies. Fasting on Shasta and worshipping Lord Shiva/Kartikeya
is the best means to take the punish¬ment on oneself. This will end the enmity. Similarly, people
born on ekadasi (11th day of lunar cycle) or during the period of planets in the eleventh house
from ascendant or the planetary dasa sign, can suffer due to shadripu (six forms of weaknesses
like non¬vegetarian food, alcohol, sex, etc). They should fast on ekadasi days and worship Sri
Maha Vishnu to overcome these weaknesses.

4 The fourth point is to consider the placement of the planet from the vari¬ous houses. For
example, Saturn in the tenth will be in the eighth from the third house and will give a long lived
younger co-born. It will also aspect the seventh house to promise a long life to spouse. There is a
saying Brahma (Saturn) gives life, Vishnu (Mer¬cury) gives wealth and all means of sustenance,
and Shiva (Jupiter) gives marriage, children, Guru and all blessings. Thus, if Saturn aspects any
house, it gives long life to that house but if it conjoins a house, its longevity is curtailed. Saturn
conjoining the lords of the 1st, 10th & 8th houses can reduce longevity. The Sun or Jupiter in the
tenth house will be in the eighth from the third and can destroy the dharma & fortune of the
younger brother because they are very inimical to the sixth house from their placement
(Sarvartha Chintamani). It was for this very reason that the horoscope of Srila Prabhupada had to
be rectified.

{tab=Karmesha}

1 The placement of the tenth lord will tend to carry the effects of the significators (Mercury,
Sat¬urn, Sun & Jupiter). Thus, if the tenth lord is in the ascendant, due to the effects of Mercury,
the native will be fickle minded; due to the effects of Saturn the native will have ill-health in
childhood (till ten years: Maharishi Parasara); due-to the effects of the Sun, the native will prefer
to pursue an independent profes¬sion and due to the effects of Jupiter, the native will have fame,
status and honor. The good results of Simhasana Yoga (10th lord in 1st/2nd house) will come
after middle age as planets in the 1st, 7th & 9th houses give their results in later life.
2 The second basis is that the tenth lord shows the direction of karma and source of fortunes: If
the tenth lord is in the second house or associates with the second lord, family business will be
source of livelihood. If the tenth lord is afflicted, then the family business will be disrupted and
cause the misfortune of the native. The strength of Jupiter, the significator of Family deity, is a
crucial factor. Since the second house rules food, the tenth lord will also indicate
business/profession re¬lated to the hotel industry if the significator Moon also influences the
tenth lord. If the tenth lord is in the third house or associates with the third lord, the job may
involve constant travelling and short journeys especially if Venus associates with the tenth lord
or is in its trines. The co-born (ruled by the third house) will further the career of the native.

3 The third basis is to count the number of signs from the tenth house to the tenth lord and vice-
versa. If the tenth lord is in the third house, it will be in the sixth from the tenth house and the
latter will be in the eighth from it This implies short-term (eighth house) service (6th house) or
contracts (3rd house) that can be executed over a short period (8th house). If the tenth lord is in
the fifth house, it will be in the eighth sign from the tenth house that will show research, occult
studies and gambling or speculation. From the tenth lord, the tenth house would be the sixth sign
(Upachaya ) showing growth and achievement. It will also show service for the orphans,
handicapped and old/sick people (8th house effect). It should be borne in mind that natural
benefics like Jupiter & Moon if placed in the eighth from their sign, could cause damage to the
same while their involvement in parivartana and other yogas will modify the negative results.

4 The fourth basis is to consider the placement of the tenth lord or tenth house from the Paka &
Arudha lagna. Paka lagna is the sign occupied by the lord of the ascendant. If the tenth house or
tenth lord is in the badhaka or dusthana from the Paka & Arudha lagna, the results are
obstruction and destruction respectively. Unemployment, underemployment and loss of job are
indicated by the placement or association of Saturn with the tenth house or tenth lord.
Contrar¬ily, Jupiter indicates a good nature and virtuous ac¬tions. Debilitated planets in the
tenth or malefics in the tenth in navamsa also indicate unemployment or underemployment. In
the dasamsa, the sixth should have malefics for difficulties in service as benefics or strong
planets related to the seventh or eighth house will tend to make him leave the service for a
business. Ill-fame is indicated by the association of Mars and Saturn or other malefics with the
tenth house or the tenth lord, or papakartari yoga on the tenth house/lord or if the tenth lord is in
a malefic navamsa. There are various combinations in standard texts bearing on the tenth house
that need a methodical study.

Dasāṁśa Devatā
The deities of the Dasāṁśa are the ten digpāla including Brahma (vertical downwards) and
Ananta (vertical upwards) reckoned directly in odd signs and in the reverse in even signs.

Since digpāla are the devatā of the dasāṁśa, planets in digbala in the rāśi or dasāṁśa have a
strong bearing on professions.

 Digbala from lagna shows blessings that give special abilities, planet related work or
subject matter as a mental direction of success due to the concerned digpāla devatā.
Worship of the digpāla devatā is vital to strengthen this blessing
 Digbala from āruḍha lagna shows the physical directions which bring success or failure
 Digbala from Chattira Rāśi is the power to work in a specific field as chattira rāśi shows
the destiny in the palm (also what is in the hand/palm).
 Digbala is always reckoned from the Viṣṇu sthāna i.e. kendra bhāva and shows the power
of the avatāra that is exercised by the digpāla devatā.

1. Mercury and Jupiter are strong in Lagna kendra (1st house), especially human signs Gemini, Virgo,
Libra and Aquarius
2. Venus and Moon are strong in jala kendra (4th house), especially water signs Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
and Capricorn
3. Saturn and Rāhu are strong in the asta kendra (7th house), especially if insect signs Cancer and Scorpio
4. Sun, Mars and Ketu are strong in gagana kendra (10th house), especially if quadruped signs Aries,
Taurus, Leo and Sagittarius. The Sun can be very strong in digbala in the bird signs Capricorn and
Pisces.
5. All planets having digbala are extra strong if also in own sign or exaltation generating mahāpuruṣa

Triṁśāṁśa Study

How to study the Trimsamsa Chart? {tab=Method} Method-1

1. Treat this like any other chart. In spiritualism we are taught of a “SHADOW SELF”
called PAPA_PURUSHA which is a reflection of our own self, but the darker side which
includes all the negative things we have done for ages and many births. This is the
trimsamsa..the shadowy world of our self. Hence, the Sun and Moon do not own any
trimsamsa as they have light.
2. Second thing is to study this chart for all the bad things we have done for which we
deserve to be punished or taught lessons. The 12th rules hospitals and is the 5th (Mantra)
from the 8th (Diseases). Hence the 12th house shows the way to get out of diseases and
other such bad karma. It is the future (5th) of the 8th house.
3. A Saturn placed in such a place is not good as it delays the recovery from diseases, makes
the effect of the mantra nil due to mistakes or “NOT WORSHIPPING GANESHJI”
before starting a mantra can render it useless unless Guru is very strong. In this manner
study the houses with focus on the 8th house (ROGA: Diseases & RINA Debts) and the
6th house (SHAD RIPU: Six kinds of weaknesses). In this manner the houses should be
studied.
4. The 9th house (Dharma) from the 8th house is the 4th house. Thus, happiness and
laughter (ruled by the 4th house) are the best natural medicine to get out of the cycle of
disease and debt. A clean heart is the key to happiness & laughter. Venus (fulfilment of
desires) gives happiness & Mercury gives laughter. Moon is the natural significator for
the 4th house and becomes the Controlling planet for good health and freedom from
diseases. In this manner the planets should be studied.
5. The Arudha pada of the sixth house gives the body part that shall be afflicted due to the
diseases.
6. Venus rules the Mritunjaya Mantra and the strength of Venus in this division is important
for recovery from diseases. The Sun and the Moon represent the Atma (Soul) and the
Mana (Mind) respectively. Affliction to the Sun will result in suffering, poverty and
misery while affliction to the Moon will cause ill health and death. Since Mars and Venus
rules the signs of exaltation of the Sun and Moon, they represent the Physical and Mental
strength of the native to cope with distress, disease and other evils respectively.

The following are my teachings to a student (Shiv Pujan) for presenting a paper at the Hyderabad
Conference. {tab=Tattva} Introduction Trimsa means thirty and amsa means division indicating
the one-thirtieth division of a sign. The Sun progresses at the rate of about one degree everyday
and its progress in 120 days is analogous to covering a span of 120 degrees in the zodiac. Manu
smriti teaches us that ‘a year of the human beings is equal to a day of the Devas’. So, 120 days of
the Sun is equal to 120 years of the human beings, which is the full life span. This indicates that
the one-degree motion of the Sun has relevance to longevity and suffering. Accordingly,
Parasara advises the use of this ‘Trimsamsa’ for determining the evils that the native has to suffer
due to past karma. The Trimsamsa (D-30) chart is used to delineate various kinds of evils one is
likely to face. In a female nativity, it shows her moral character, and this can be extended to all
charts as well. Trimsamsa and Tattva The Trimsamsa lords are Mars (5°) Saturn (50) Jupiter
(80), Mercury (70) and Venus (50) for odd signs and the reverse for even signs. The deities
accordingly are Agni, Vāyu, Indra, Kubera and Varuṇa for odd signs and the reverse for even
signs. Pt. Sanjay Rath writes, “The deities are based on the five elements of Fire (Agni), Wind
(vāyu), ākāś or Ether (Indra the God of Gods – the Sky), Prthivī or Earth (Kubera the lord of
wealth), and Jala or Fluid (Varuṇa the God of Water). Whereas each of the four elements
of Agni (Fire), Jala(Water), Vāyu (Wind) and Prthivī (Earth) rule the trines of Aries, Cancer,
Libra and Capricorn respectively, the fifth element ākāś (Ether) pervades all signs and
hence, Indra becomes the God of all these Gods. This is mentioned in the Vedic Hymn “śaṁ no
indra vṛddhaśravāḥ” wherein all the peoples from time immemorial have been taking shelter
(asraya) under Indra for their welfare and protection from evils as the Trimsamsa represents the
evils that befall man.” Table: Trimsamsa & Tattva

{tab=Weakness} Pancha Makara Fall in character or weaknesses show due to the affliction to
the ruling elements. The weaknesses are called Pancha Makara or the five M’s. If a planet is
placed in a certain Trimsamsa, which is ruled by a particular tatwa, then affliction to the planet
will show in the form of affliction to the tatwa causing the rise of a particular weakness or bad
habit. Other weaknesses or bad habits generally follow this first weakness. Table: Pancha
Makara
Weakness Description Tattva Planet
Madya Alcohol (Intoxicants) Vayu Saturn
Mamsa Meat Agni Mars
Matsya Fish Prthvi Mercury
Mudra Palm/ hand posture Akasha Jupiter
Maithuna Copulation Jala Venus

Shadripu – Six Weaknesses The Parashari Trimsamsa chart is used to know about diseases. The
Trimsamsa chart shows ṣaḍripu (six weaknesses). These are acquired and are represented by
Saturn who is Karaka of sixth house. In addition, it is used in delineating moral character in a
female nativity. One of the five Tatwa (primordial elements) comes under heavy affliction and
shows the kind of health problem one is likely to face. It also shows kind of character one has
and the time of manifestation of such character. Six planets show six acquired weaknesses as per
table below. It is noteworthy that the Satwa Guna planets do not contribute to the ñaòripu or the
six weaknesses. The Satwa Guna planets are the Sun, Moon and Jupiter. The rajas Guna planets
Mercury & Venus cause Ego/jealousy and lust related weaknesses while the Tamas Guna planets
cause anger (Mars), greed (Rahu), intoxicant addiction (Saturn) and illusions and mistakes
(Ketu).

Table: Shadripu

Hindi Translation
Mars Krodha Anger
Rahu Lobha Greed
Saturn Mada Intoxication
Venus Mamsa Lust (Kama)
Mercury Matsarya Ego & Jealousy
Ketu Moha Illusion

Trimsamsa shows the number of ṣaḍripu acquired by a person. Diseases can be of two
types: Nija (self / internal) and Agantuka(External). Each of these has two sub-categories. Nija
disease can affect either the body (eighth house) or mind (eighth house & fifth house). Agantuka
can be of two types, i.e. Driṣṭa (known causes sixth house) and Adriṣṭa (unknown causes,
Badhak and Badhakesh). Here we are dealing with Driṣṭa type of diseases, which are acquired
and should be seen in sixth house. Trimsamsa chart falls in the second harmonic of sixth house.
The following formula below shows its level of working.

30 = 12 + 12 +6
Division number First cycle (Physical level) Second cycle (Consciousness) Third cycle (Sub- consciou

The above formula shows that D/30 chart works at the sub-conscious level and we can find out
the weaknesses an individual has acquired in this life. If one were conscious of forces at work in
D/30 chart, one would not have any weakness at all. {tab=Bhava} Lagna The lagna of any chart
shows the native himself. The lagna of D/30 chart shows his weaknesses. It shows what has been
defined as Avishnu (i.e. not Vishnu or against Vishnu). In this it is opposite of what is shown by
a D/3 chart. We have to focus on Lagna, tenth house and eighth house to know the weaknesses
(shadripu) of the native, as these are important houses while considering the longevity of the
matter in focus in any chart. Planets in Lagna will show weaknesses acquired during current birth
directly related to bodily weaknesses. If any of the Shadripu coming from any planet is in Lagna,
this is a weakness that has developed in this birth due to inherent weakness of D/30 Lagna itself
(which means intelligence, learning etc.). In addition to planets in Lagna, the Lagna Lord of this
chart will indicate the Tatwa that has become strong or weak. The Lagna Lord of D/30 chart
shows the exact disease. Tenth house Malefics in tenth house denoting Shadripu shows mental
weaknesses where weaknesses develop due to various pressures, which the mind fails to
counter. Eighth house Planets afflicting eighth house shows weaknesses inherited from past
incarnation. Important considerations in Delineation If the Rasi chart is in Agni Tatwa and the
D/30 chart shows Jala Tatwa (opposite of Agni Tatwa) or vice- versa, there is sure to be plenty
of problems. Dasa and Antar Dasa lord who are mutually hostile by owning opposite Tatwa
create many serious problems (For example, Saturn Dasa-Venus Antar Dasa or Venus Dasa-
Saturn Antar Dasa or Mercury Dasa-Mars Antar Dasa or Mars Dasa- Mercury Antar Dasa) When
D/30 chart shows contradictory influences on any pair, bad results are likely to follow. Five
planets (leaving aside the non-luminous planets Rahu and Ketu and the Sun and Moon, having
no lordship in Parashari Trimsamsa, are omitted) rule five Tatwa (primordial elements) as below.
The Mahapurush Yoga each one of them forms is given along with the presiding deity, as per the
table given below.

Table: Planetary Tattva

Planet Tatwa Mahapurusha Yoga Deity

Mars Agni (Fire) Ruchaka Surya
Mercury Prithvi (Earth) Bhadra Ganesha
Venus Jala (Water) Malavya Devi
Saturn Vayu (Air) Sasa Siva
Jupiter Aakash (Ether) Hamsa Narayana
The 12 signs of Zodiac are also divided into four groups as below: Table: Rasi Tattva

Rasi Tattva
1,5,9 Fiery signs
2,6,10 Earthy signs
3,7,11 Airy signs
4,8,12 Watery signs

The fifth element namely Ether keeps these four elements together. Use of Naisargika
Dasa Naisargika Dasa (natural period) is a wonderful tool for finding out the negative
experiences one is likely to go through in this life. The natural ruler of a person’s age between 5-
12 is Mercury, between ages 13 – 32 is Venus and between ages 33-50 is Jupiter. Any afflictions
to these planets will show negative experiences in the corresponding age group. In particular,
curses on these planets should be checked in D-30 chart. {tab=Remedy} Remedies based on D-
30 chart A remedy can be suggested based on the Trimsamsa Lagna. As Trimsamsa Lagna
shows one’s weaknesses, a proper remedy would do away with these weaknesses.

 If Lagna rising in D-30 chart is a sign of Saturn, do Pranayama.

 If it is in the sign of Jupiter do meditation.
 If it is in the sign of Mars, light a lamp.
 If it is in the sign of Venus perform Pooja, donation etc.
 If it is in the sign of Mercury do Japa

In this context, Mahidhara opines that one who worships the Pancha devata, everyday (as per the
table above) shall have a smooth life and shall always be protected irrespective of evils. This is
so because all Trimsamsa are covered by this worship. In Pancha – Upachara Pooja the items
given under the following table indicated against the planet should be offered. Table: Planetary
Remedies

Planet Remedy Panchopachar

Mars Lamp Deepa
Mercury Perfume Gandha
Jupiter Flower Pushpa
Venus Food Naivedya
Saturn Incense Dhoopa

Best Remedy: The best remedy for any planet is to worship the deity concerned with the planet
in Trimsamsa. For example, if Sun is in Saturn’s Trimsamsa, then worship Shiva (see table
above) for relief from the negative Sun. Also see Dasa/Antar Dasa and then decide the remedy.
Similarly if Saturn is in Mar’s Trimsamsa, worship Sun. {tab=Video}

Trimśāṁśa

What is the Trimsamsa, and how to draw a Trimsamsa Chart?

Trimsamsa means the one-thirtieth portion of a sign measuring one degree. Unlike other
divisions, the Sun and Moon are not the Lords of any trimsamsa and the Nodes (Rahu & Ketu)
also do not owm any trimsamsa. Thus the remaining five of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and
Saturn own the trimsamsa. They represent the five elemental states of existence (see table 1).

Table 1: Five Elements

The positions of the planets and the Lagna in the Rasi chart are used to determine the Trimsamsa
occupied by them. For example, if Jupiter is in 26-07′ in Pisces, then since it is in an even sign,
from Table 2, we see that it is in Scorpio (even sign ruled by Mars). In this manner, the
trimsamsa of all the planets and Lagna is determined and the resultant chart is called the
Trimsamsa or D-30 Chart. The trimsamsa chart of the standard nativity is given below.

Presentation Trimsamsa: D30 Chart

Siddhāṁśa Slides
There are two types of siddhāṁśa (D24 charts) just
are there are two types of knowledge that can be mastered – (a) apara vidyā, the knowledge of
everything that has manifested and (b) para vidyā, the spiritual knowledge. The construction of
the divisional charts for these two purposes has to be different and for convenience, we use two
different nomenclature for them.

Caturvimśāṁśa, literally meaning ‘24’ is used loosely for both charts while siddhāṁśa has
generally been used by all astrologers do refer to the apara-vidyā chart. On the other hand
Parāśara uses the word अअअअअअअअअअ (vedavāhvaṁśa) to introduce the D24-Chart. The
name implies that it is the carrier of all knowledge as the number ‘24’ refers to the gāyatrī
chandas associated with this divisional chart. Naturally then, these is para-vidyā also included in
this and we refer to this as D-24P Chart or vedavāhvaṁśa.

Construction of D24 Charts

Both charts are constructed using the following śloka:

Translation: The lords of the siddhāṁśa (D24) divisions of a signs, in case of
odd signs, are reckoned from Leo and in case of even signs are reckoned from
Cancer.
The name siddhāṁśa is used for both caturvimśāṁśa of apara vidyā as well as vedavāhvaṁśa of
para vidyā.

All signs have their reckoning originating from the sign owned by a luminary – Leo owned by
Sun or Cancer owned by Moon. In spiritual world, this is the Śiva-Śaktī discourse where all
knowledge is symbolised by light of the luminaries.

Apara Vidyā uses the Caturvimśāṁśa (D24 Chart) where the count is always direct based on the
‘Brahma – Creator Principle’ of Saturn where the signs have always got to be reckoned direct.
The 24 divisions of Aries and all odd signs are counted from Leo in the direct order i.e. Leo-
Virgo-Libra and so on. The 24 divisions of Taurus and all even signs are counted from Cancer,
also in the direct order i.e. Cancer-Leo-Virgo and so on. This chart is used for studying formal or
social education related to the mundane world. It includes schooling, graduate and post graduate
studies including masters and doctorate education. Accordingly the table for caturvimśāṁśa is
furnished below.

Rājayoga from Horā

Indian Maharaja
Rule 06: Kalyāṇavermā (Sārāvalī) teaches that rājayoga are initiated by the Sun
and sustained by the Moon. By implication it means that planets well placed in
the Sun horā initiate the rājayoga while those in the Moon horā sustain the
rājayoga.
However this is not accepted traditionally and is inaccurate translation of the śloka of
Kalyāṇavermā. Rājayoga will be initiated by “Savitur” i.e. Lagna and in the Parāśara horā
chakra, these will be planets placed in the same horā as the lagna. The daśā of the planets who
have the capacity to give rājayoga will initiate them if they are in lagna horā.
Similarly the sustenance of rājayoga can be interrupted by planets in the other horā (i.e. other
than lagna horā). For example, if lagna is in Sun horā then the planets in Moon horā can destroy
the rājayoga.
Yet there is a catch to this. To come to a final conclusion we need to assess whether the lagna is
promising rājayoga or the 7 house. We learn this in much greater detail later when we study
th

rājayoga. At this stage we do some basic chart examinations.

 It is not important that the planets are fruitful or fruitless.

 The nature of the planets will inform us about the reasons for which the person has
achieved this position/rājayoga. Natural malefic planets show fights and many challenges
associated with their nature while natural benefic planets show the areas of concern that
are to follow.
 अअअअअअअ (Savitur) is the “name of the Sun god Sūrya when He works as the kāraka
for lagna” and the simple seven syllable mantra is “अअअ अअअअअअअअअअअअअअअ
tat saviturvareṇyaṁ”

D1: Sun in lagna trikoṇa

When the Sun is in trines to lagna in rāśi chart then we can say that the “Savitur energy” is
actively functioning through the lagna itself. This concept of solar trines is called अअअअअअअ
(koṇārka) – from koṇa (trine) + arka (Sun). When the Sun is in 1 , 5 or 9 house it is in lagna
st th th

koṇa and gāyatrī is strong in lagna. This is Brahma gāyatrī with the bīja

Rajiv Gandhi

Start of Rājayoga: Sun is in trines to lagna, so we may use the lagna horā as Savitur (initiator of
rājayoga). Rajiv Gandhi became the 6 Prime Minister of India after the death of his mother in
th

Rāhu daśā Jupiter antardaśā. He was the PM from 31 October 1984 – 2 December 1989 during
Rāhu-Jupiter and Rāhu-Saturn periods. It is noteworthy that both Jupiter and Saturn are in the
lagna horā in Leo with the Sun.

End of Rājayoga: Mercury antardaśā started in October 1989 and he lost power in December of
the same year. Mercury is very malefic being in an odd sign in rāśi chart and Moon horā. It is
also with the nodes and can become very adverse. There was a huge scandal but he stood his
ground and without his outside support Chandrasekhar and others could not have come to power.
However later in the same antardaśā of Mercury in 1991 he was assassinated.

Indira Gandhi
The longest serving Prime Minister of India, her name was synonymous with India itself –
“Indira is India”. She was in power as the personal assistant of her father Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru
after independence and then later joined the Rajya Sabha (Upper House) after he passed in 1964
and became After her father’s death in 1964 she was appointed as a member of the Rajya Sabha
(upper house) and became Minister of Information and Broadcasting (1964-66). Jupiter daśā had
started in 1954 and she would surely rise high as it is in rājayoga and is very well placed in lagna
horā in Leo. In Sun antardaśā (1966) she became PM. Sun is the lord of the lagna but is not in
Leo but it will surely sustain and increase power as it bridges the power start (Leo) and
sustenance (Cancer).

For eleven long years she stayed in power as PM [24 January 1966 – 24 March 1977]. Losing
power for a few years in Venus antardaśā, she regained it in Sun antardaśā (14 January 1980 – 31
October 1984) until she was assassinated in Rāhu antardaśā of Saturn daśā by her bodyguards.

D1: Sun in kāma trikoṇa

When the Sun is in the seventh house it is sunset and rudra gāyatrī prevails. This energy is also
transmitted when the Sun is in trines to 7 house i.e. in 3 and 11 houses. Koṇārka is in kāma
th rd th

bhāva with Rudra gāyatrī. Since the gāyatrī is in the opposite house, the rājayoga is not initiated
by the horā lagna but by the opposite or other house. For example if the lagna is in Sun horā
(Leo) then the planets in Moon horā (Cancer) will be the initiators of rājayoga.

Barack Obama
In the chart of President Barack Obama Sun is in the seventh house in rudra gāyatrī (sunset) with
the kāma bīja (klīṁ) indicating that the power of Savitur is in the sign opposite to the lagna.
Lagna is in Sun horā (Leo) and the rājayoga initiating planets will be in the Moon horā.
Mercury is in Cancer and horā chakra confirming that it is very beneficial.
Jupiter, Moon, Saturn and Mars join Mercury in Cancer (lunar) horā and are capable of initiating
the rājayoga.
Barack Obama became the 44 President of the United States in Jupiter daśā Moon antardaśā. His
th

rating was high during this period and stayed high through Mars antardaśā. However with the
advent of Rāhu antardaśā (Feb 2010 to July 2012) his ratings dipped inspite of every effort he
made. Saturn daśā starts in 2012 July and it is expected that his rājayoga may be returned by the
strength of this Saturn as it is well placed in rāśi and is also associated with the sign (Cancer) of
horā chart which initiates rājayoga.
Of course, this is not sufficient to make predictions. It is only a starting point and students should
not get carried away by the power of this tool to be used independently.

D1: Sun in artha trikoṇa

When the Sun is in the tenth house it is mid-day and Viṣṇu gāyatrī prevails. This energy is also
transmitted when the Sun is in trines to 10 house i.e. in 2 and 6 houses. Koṇārka is in artha
th nd th

bhāva. Savitur is in the fourth bhāva from the Sun (as lagna is in fourth from Sun in 10 house).
th

This is the Abhijit muhurta and favours the lagna. Therefore, we should study the rājayoga from
lagna in horā chart just as we did for Sun in Lagna trikoṇa. See examples of Rajiv Gandhi and
Indira Gandhi above.
D1: Sun in mokṣa trikoṇa

When the Sun is in the fourth house it is mid-night and Kali (turīya) gāyatrī prevails. This energy
is also transmitted when the Sun is in trines to fourth house i.e. in 12 and 8 houses. Koṇārka is
th th

in mokṣa bhāva. Savitur is in the tenth bhāva from the Sun (as lagna is in tenth from Sun in
fourth house). Abhijit rāśi is always in the 4 from the Sun, and it is in the 7 house. Therefore,
th th

we should study the rājayoga from sign opposite the lagna in horā chart just as we did for Sun in
kāma trikoṇa. See examples of Barack Obama above.

Parivartana Yoga

The word parivartana means “to turn round, invert or change completely” implying a barter of
some kind where an exchange is involved. In the rudimentary Sun-Moon Parāśara horā this can
happen if the Sun is in Cancer horā and the Moon is in Leo horā, and then there exists an
‘exchange of signs between the luminaries’. This causes a major shift and is the highest
relationship between any two planets. It is a revolution marking the end of something like a
period of time of one thing and leading to a completely new disposition. Parivartana always
implies radical change or opposite to what is normally indicated.

In order to study the effect of the parivartana, we will need to redraw the chart in a peculiar
manner. Leo will become Cancer and Cancer becomes Leo! All planets in Sun horā in Leo will
behave as if in Cancer horā whereas planets in Moon horā in Cancer will behave as if in Sun
horā in Leo in only matters where the exchange is considered. In all other matters of individual
results, they will continue to be where they are. Basically if Mercury is in an odd sign and in
Moon horā it will give bad results and this will not change even if there is parivartana because
the effect of Mercury being good or bad is not limited to the horā chart alone but to both the rāśi
and horā charts. On the other hand, if Jupiter is in Sun horā and promises good results it may not
do so after the parivartana as the results of Jupiter are based solely on the horā chart and not on
both the rāśi and horā charts. It can seem complicated, so let us study an example to understand
this.

Jawaharlal Nehru
We have seen the chart of Jawaharlal Nehru in the previous lesson. In the SM-Horā chart, the
Moon is in Cancer and Sun is in Leo. Parivartana yoga is applicable and we have to redraw the
chart changing the signs so that we can understand the impact of the parivartana yoga.

Examine the planets –

 Mercury is in odd sign (Li) in rāśi chart and even sign (Cn) in SM-horā. It will continue
to be malefic due to this mixture of odd and even sign. Parivartana cannot alter this as
this is related to the rāśi chart.
 Planets in lagna continue to be associated with the lagna
 Jupiter was fruitless due to moon horā but due to parivartana it comes to Leo and is
fruitful, even though it is not in lagna.

These are some simple examples. You have to work on a number of charts until you get the hang
of this method. It can take time but every extra chart you study will help you. I have not included
charts of spiritual giants. I leave it to you to study these as an Assignment – Examine the horā
charts of four people including your own.

Paraṁparā Upadeśa

It is noteworthy that the nodes will always occupy the same sign – Cancer or Leo. Whenever the
nodes occupy the same sign in any divisional chart it indicates the possibility of escape from this
cycle of rebirth. The Parāśara Horā chart shows one of the important paths to mokṣa, and this
involves the invocation of the power of the Sun and the Moon as the lords of Leo and Cancer.
This invocation is done traditionally by taking the names of the avatāra – Rāma and Kṛṣṇa
respectively. Therefore the first mantra upadeśa from the Parāśara Horā is the Paraṁparā Mantra.

अअअ अअअ अअअअअ

hare rāma kṛṣṇa

The reverse mantra is also specifically noted by Śrī Acyutānanda our Parama-Guru in the book
“Guru-Bhakti Gītā” (Odiya language).

अअअ अअअअअ अअअ

hare kṛṣṇa rāma

All students are requires to recite this mantra 108 times as soon as they wake up, and before they
step out of the bed and place their feet on mother earth. Your weight is another burden of sin that
mother earth has to carry for another day. Before you place this burden on Her head, do consider
reciting this mantra. You must be facing east or north while reciting this mantra. To do so, you
must sleep with your feet facing the east (to awaken to east) or north i.e. head is in the west or
south respectively.

Which of these mantras am I supposed to do? Which one suits me? I use a simple test to
ascertain this. If your lagna is in Sun horā, then the first mantra अअअ अअअ अअअअअ hare rāma
kṛṣṇa” will suit you. If instead your lagna is in Moon horā, you will find the second mantra अअअ
अअअअअ अअअ hare kṛṣṇa rāma” to be more comfortable.

Pitṛs – Sky Fathers

Pitṛs are broadly known as the progenitors of all beings, both divine and corporeal. They are the
forefathers of everyone and everything being primeval deities and can never cease to exist being
immortal. They are divided into two classes based on their origin and spiritual level – daiva
pitaraḥ (divine pitṛs) and the manuṣyāḥ pitaraḥ(human ancestors) and the latter derive from the
former based on the ancestry [study saptarṣi – seven seers]. The pitṛs being spiritual beings at the
level of devas exist in the higher lokas while some manuṣya pitṛ exist in the tala (lower regions
or worlds) as well. In jyotiṣa, for the sake of remedies and sustenance coming from the horā
(food, wealth), we are more concerned with the daiva pitṛs. There are seven classes (like seven
weekday planets) of daiva pitṛs –

Three of these classes of daiva pitṛs are amṛtayaḥ i.e. immersed in the nectar of immortality and
incorporeal while the remaining four classes are samṛtayaḥ i.e. corporeal. All pitṛs have different
origins, forms, grades and abodes which can be learnt from the purāṇa literature. Particularly
Vāyu and Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa as well as Matsya and Padma Purāṇa.

{tab=Commentary}

Commentary
Parāśara speaks of the half division of the rāśi of 15° each. As such the first principle of
differentiation of the rāśi is made as odd and even. The odd numbered signs counted from Aries
are named “odd signs” and even numbered signs are “even signs”. The first couple are the Sun
and Moon representing divine father Śiva and mother Gaurī. Odd signs have Sun as their over-
lord indicating the masculine aggressive nature and even signs have the Moon indicating their
passive feminine nature.

Parāśara now takes us to a deeper aspect of the sign called ‘horā’ (15°) which is a half the sign
(30°). If the rāśi takes about 2 hours for the lagna to traverse, then the lagna traverses the horā in
about an hour. In other words, the hour is synonymous with the horā.

In odd signs the first horā (0-15°) is ruled by the Sun and the second horā (15°-30°) is ruled by
the Moon. We find that the Sun which symbolises the male energy of the odd sign continues to
rule the first horā while the second horā is ruled by the Moon and shows a passive energy. In
even signs the first horā (0-15°) is ruled by the Moon and the second horā (15°-30°) is ruled by
the Sun, which is the reverse of odd signs. We find that the Moon which symbolises the feminine
energy of the even sign continues to rule the first horā while the second horā is ruled by the Sun
and showing aggressive energy. The real internal nature as “aggressive, masculine” or “passive,
feminine” is seen from the horā and not the rāśi. Men work during the day and rest at night – this
horā differentiation also shows them as “producers” or “enjoyers” respectively for Sun and
Moon horā. Thus when any planet is placed in the horā of the Sun (1 half odd sign or 2 half
st nd

even sign) it has to behave like a producer, become systematic and steady like the Sun, become
aggressive, energized to create and so all that people do during the daytime. Instead if the planet
is placed in the Moon horā (2 horā of odd signs and 1 horā of even signs), then it beckons the
nd st

native to bask in the cool moonlight, feel romantic, enjoy music and all the good things the world
has to offer.

Light is the enlivener and during the daytime the source of natural light is the Sun. This is
received as reflected by the Moon in the night. What the Moon does is to remove the “heat” and
only pass on the “light” which makes it so cooling and yet things can be visible.
{tab=Horā Chakra}
Parāśara Horā Chakra
Based on this division of the rāśi into two parts controlled by the Sun and the Moon, we can have
a two-sign horā chart called “Parāśara Horā Chakra” which has just two signs – Cancer and Leo.
This is based on the śloka 5½ where the planets owning the signs become the rulers of the varga
(divisions). For example, if the first half of Aries is lorded by the Sun, then this should map into
Leo which is the sign owned by the Sun (day). If the second half of Aries is lorded by the Moon
(night), then this should map into Cancer which is owned by the Moon.

Correct way of drawing the North, East and South Indian Parāśara Horā Chakra is shown in the
diagram with just two functional signs – Leo and Cancer.
Step 1: Determine the horā of the lagna as being in the Sun or Moon half. If it is in the Sun half,
then in the North India Chart, write the number “5” (Leo) in the top box and number “4” in the
bottom box.
In the East and South India charts, the signs are clearly fixed and based on “uttara ayana” (north)
for the Moon (Cancer) and “dakṣiṇa ayana” (south) for the Sun (Leo). Write “Lag” (for Lagna)
either in the upper or lower half depending on whether the lagna is in the Moon or Sun horā
respectively.

Step 2: Determine the placement of all planets (special ascendants, āruḍha etc) in either the Sun
or Moon horā and accordingly place them in Leo or Cancer in the chart.
{tab=Illustration}
Eg
Parāśara Horā of Standard Chart
Step 1: Lagna is in Pisces 14°5’ which is in the first half (0°-15°). Pisces is an even sign and the
first horā is ruled by the Moon. Therefore the lagna is placed in Cancer. In the north India chart
the number “4” is written in the top quadrant. In the east and south charts the word ‘Lag’ is
written in the upper half of the box.

Step 2: Similar exercise is done with each of the other planets and they are placed in Cancer or
Leo.

Rules for Judgment

Rules for judgment of this Parāśara Horā have been spelt out in the next chapter titled

Rule 02: Mercury is equally strong in yielding fruits during day or night (i.e. Leo or Cancer).
However the fruits are felt when it is in the Moon horā in even signs and Sun horā in odd signs,
else it is fruitless.
Some say that Leo is the sign of its detriment, and therefore Mercury should be better when in
Cancer. But this is not found to be correct. Instead Parāśara point that Mercury gives good results
when in the “first horā” (0°-15°) of a sign is found to be more accurate. In even signs (female
energy), the first horā is that of the Moon (feminine) whereas in odd signs (male energy), the
first horā is that of the Sun (male energy). This causes the sign and horā energies to match. If the
sign and horā energies do not match, it does not affect the other planets but it does create the
problem of “eunuch” or birth defect in Mercury. This causes the changeable Mercury to become
negative.

Rāhu-Ketu Rules
Nodes are naturally like Saturn (Rāhu) or Mars (Ketu) and therefore, should be better in Cancer
than in Leo. But they are different than these planets and tend to eclipse the Sun and Moon
respectively.
Rule 03:If Rāhu and Ketu are in the same horā as Lagna, they bring strife and troubles from
“within” or inside the family, company or home. Such people have a natural tendency to like
foreigners, foreign cultures and are very broad minded, free from bigotry. Yet there is a danger
of over emphasis of the foreign to the detriment of their tradition if the planets associating are in
negative (fruitless) horā.
Rule 04:If Rāhu and Ketu are not in the lagna horā then they indicate strife and troubles from
“without” or outsiders including foreign nations, people or things you may not know. Such
people have a tendency to like their own family, people and culture and could become
xenophobic and very critical of foreign cultures. They could suffer from over emphasis of their
tradition and ancient customs and become narrow minded if the planets associating are in
negative (fruitless) horā.
{tab=Longevity}
Longevity-Suffering Rule
The Sun-Moon Parāśara Horā is the first rudimentary system for determining the planets which
are contributing to growth (Sun horā) and sustenance (Moon horā). Planets adversely placed in
this two-sign chart lack the “light of life”.
Rule 05: Death and suffering can happen only when there is no jīva-jyoti (life-light). The daśā
graha which derives is light from the Sun is without light and the antardaśā graha which derives
its light from the Moon is also without light. Death and suffering is symbolic of darkness.
Vedic Remedies
The eyes of a creature are the doors to its soul. Sun is the right eye and Moon is the left eye in
male nativities which is reversed for female nativities. Death happens when the daśā and
antardaśā planets are without life-light which by implication means that the two eyes are closing
and shutting down permanently. Death is everlasting sleep from which the soul never returns to
the same body. Since neither the right eye nor left eye can open due to the overpowering
darkness, the only way in which the creature can continue to live is through the light of the “third
eye”. Three deities have third-eye attribute: Lord Śiva, His śaktī Durgā and His son Gaṇeśa (in
kṛṣṇa pakṣa). The highest mantra which can ensure that the third-eye is always open and death is
kept away is the mṛtyuṅjaya mantra. All jyotiṣa students have to memorize this mantra and recite
it 21 times before going to sleep.

Saturn is ill placed in Leo and Venus is ill placed in Cancer. All other planets are very well
placed in the correct horā. Mercury is away from the nodes but is in Leo which can be said to be
a sign of its detriment but it is also in an odd sign in the rāśi chart and therefore shall yield fruits.
The nodes Rāhu and Ketu are in Cancer and the Lagna is also in Cancer horā indicating troubles,
shocks and strife from “within”. The natives own family or own people will let him down or
cause setbacks.
Rajiv Gandhi

Rajiv Gandhi has Lagna in Leo horā with Jupiter; Rāhu and Ketu are in Cancer showing danger
from foreign people or things. Mercury is in odd sign (Leo), in Cancer horā indicating that
Mercury has become fruitless and negative. In addition Mercury also joins the nodes in Cancer.
He was assassinated in Rāhu daśā Mercury antardaśā by a terrorist from Śrī-Lanka (foreigner).

The other negative planets are Saturn and Venus. Saturn daśā never featured in his life and
Venus daśā was for 14 years in childhood (1944-58).

Indira Gandhi
Indira Gandhi also has Lagna in Leo horā with Jupiter; Rāhu and Ketu are in Leo in Lagna horā
showing danger from “within” indicating family, staff, own party and people or things. Mercury
is in even sign (Scorpio), in Cancer horā indicating that Mercury has become fruitful and
positive. The other negative planets are Saturn and Venus (just like Rajiv Gandhi). She was
assassinated in Saturn daśā Rāhu antardaśā by her own staff and trusted bodyguards.
Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma Gandhi has Lagna in Leo horā. The nodes Rāhu and Ketu are in Cancer showing
danger from foreign people, unknown people or things from outside his family and circles.
Mercury is in odd sign (Libra), in Leo horā indicating that Mercury has become fruitful and
positive. The other negative planets are Jupiter, Saturn and Venus being in the wrong horā.
Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948, in Jupiter daśā Ketu antardaśā by an Indian who
cannot be said to belong to family or inner circle or employment and was definitely an

the wrong horā. Nehru died on 27 May 1964 in Rāhu daśā Mercury antardaśā because of old
age/disease.

Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln has Lagna in Leo horā. The nodes Rāhu and Ketu are in Cancer showing
danger from foreign people, unknown people or things from outside his family and circles.
Mercury is in odd sign (Aquarius), in Cancer horā indicating that Mercury has become fruitless
and negative. The other negative planets are Jupiter and Mars being in the wrong horā. Lincoln
was assassinated on 15 April 1865, in Saturn daśā Mercury antardaśā by an Actor who was
definitely an “outsider” from the southern confederacy.

Horā Meaning

Meaning of Horā

There can be various meanings of the word horā

and it is preposterous to conclude that this word was borrowed from the Greeks as we find this
mentioned in the Vedic literature, which predates any other civilization in the world. Parāśara the
author of the monumental classic ‘Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra’ (BPHS) is a Maharishi (seer) of
the Rig Veda having contributed the nine chapters in the first mandala (R.V. I – 65 to 73). Thus,
it is obvious that the word ‘Horā’ dates back to the Vedic period. Since the understanding of this
holds a vital key to the entire subject matter of Jyotiṣa, let us attempt to grasp its meanings and
import as well as its usage in Vedic astrology.

Translation: The creator has written the destiny of all beings as lines of letters on their
forehead. With stainless eyes (sight/vision), the erudite astrologers decipher them and
prognosticate.

Etymology

The meanings of the word Horā has been spelt out by Raja Kalyāṇa Verma in his monumental
Classic ‘Sārāvalī’ wherein the first meaning has been given as the ability of the astrologer to
prognosticate or read the destiny of any being that is written on his forehead. The references to
‘eyes’ and ‘sight’ indicate that (a) Jyotiṣa is a vedāñga and specifically, is the ‘eye of the Vedas’
and (b) the ability to see (physical vision) is given by the Sun as it is the only original source of
light that is bright enough to cause vision.

Translation: The word ‘Horā’ is derived from the word अअअअअअअअ (ahorātra). The first
part of this word अअअ (aho) means day or sunlight period and the second part of this word
अअअअअ (rātra) means night. By removing the initial letter अ (a) from the first part and last
phoneme अअअ (tra) from the second part we obtain the new word अअअअ (horā). And that is
what it precisely means. This contains the zodiac and planets, which are being discussed (in
subsequent chapters). Thus, the word ‘Horā’ primarily implies the two fold division of a ‘Vāra’
which literally means –

1. a day of 24 hours or
2. the period between two consecutive sunrise} into the diurnal and nocturnal halves.

This division of the day implies a geocentric vision of the universe that is the primary definition
of the ‘bha-chakra’ (zodiac). Furthermore, the apparent movement of the Sun (and other planets)
is also implied in the cause of the day and night halves. Since the Vāra is defined from sunrise to
sunrise, the Sun is the cause, and hence the overlord of the days. The Sun shines in the day and
the stars hide their faces while in the darkness of the night all secrets of theirs can be known. The
Sun is the lord of the diurnal half as well as it is the brightest source of light during the day.
Among the lights at night, when the nakṣatra are visible, the brightest is the Moon and hence, the
Moon is the dual overlord of both the night as well as the nakṣatra.

Translation: The results of a person’s karma based on the varṇa-āśrama (four castes or varṇa)
are known [by the knower of horā śāstra i.e. jyotiṣa]. Horā came to mean the study of the quality
of time starting with the primary division of the day into the two halves of day and night. The
time of sunrise was most auspicious for the agni-hotri (fire sacrifice priests) and the astrologer
played a prominent role in predicting the time of sunrise and beginning of auspicious functions
and ceremonies. This study of the division of time and space into parts (amsa) and its impact on
life is called Jyotish of which (1) Ganita (mathematics), (2) Gola (spherical geometry) and (3)
Hora Shastra form the three parts with the latter dealing with the study of the quality of time for
prognostication. The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, Bhagavat Gita and other literature explain the
theory of the transmigration of the soul and the process of rebirth based on the Karma of past
incarnations. This theory of Karma is the root philosophy behind Jyotish and to that extent Hora-
shastra, being a Vedanga, accepts and uses this theory in deciphering the past existence, the
karma causing suffering or joy and even prescribing suitable remedial measures.
