Chapter 1

The Problem

Background of the study

Communication (from Latin “communicare”, meaning “to share”)

is the act of conveying intended meanings from one entity or group

to another through the use of mutually understood signs and

semiotic rules. It is can also be defined as impacting or exchanging

of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium,

means of sending or receiving information .

Communication is an important and integral part of life,

without which no one might survive. Verbal and non-verbal
communication starts from birth and does not end until death
(vertino 2014). Communication is needed not only for
transmission of information and knowledge to another, but
more significantly to inter-relate as human beings everywhere
in the world.

Barriers is anything built or serving to bar passage, as

a railing or fence. Barrier is a material object or sent of
object that separate, demarcates, or serves as a barricade
that prevents access. But in this study barrier is being used
as an adverb, in this sense barriers can be define as an
obstacle that prevents effective exchange of ideas or
thoughts. Such barriers includes; status differences, gender
differences, cultural differences, prejudice and
organisational environment.
Chapter 2

Design and Methodology

This chapter present the research design, population and

locale, data gathering tool and the treatment of data of the
study.

Research Design
The study on communication experiences of senior foreign
student nurses with a pediatric client is a qualitative
descriptive phenomenological research that attempts to gather
and accumulate data regarding the experiences of the foreign
senior student nurses when communicating to a pediatric
client as well as the challenges they experienced and the
time they spent in communicating with them. The research would
utilize descriptive phenomenological research methods in the
conduct of the study. The qualitative methodology known as
phenomenology is thus an apt approach to inquiry by nurse
researchers seeking to examine ‘experience’. Particularly
because the main focus in a phenomenological study is indeed,
experience(s). Descriptive phenomenology used to reach true
meanings through engaging in-depth into reality (Laverty,
2003; Lopez & Willis, 2004). Husserl valued the experience of
phenomenon as perceived by human consciousness which should
be an object of scientific study (Lopez & Willis, 2004). One
of the important assumptions of Husserlian descriptive
phenomenology is bracketing in which the researcher should
declare personal biases, assumptions, and presuppositions and
put them aside (Gearing, 2004). The aim of this is to keep
what is already known about the description of the phenomenon
separately from participants' description.). Husserl believed
