Gender Equality

The world in this day and age is considered to be very problematic due to the issues that

need to be resolved immediately. The United Nations has broken down 17 different categories

that they believe needs to be fixed and achieved by the year 2030. Gender equality, being one of

the main issues affecting this generation as many people view it in different ways and hold

different perspectives on what gender equality truly is. Gender equality is defined as “the state

of which access to rights or opportunities is unaffected by gender.” Many men are mistreating

women in the work, and social environment different ways. This problem not only is occurring

locally but it is also seen globally. Sustainable Development Goals chose this goal to reach

because it is felt as if everyone were to be treated equal, then a lot of problems will get a solved

on their own. Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but it is necessary for a

peaceful, phosphorus, sustainable world.

This goal needs to be reached because one in every three women are beaten (Gender

Integration”). Which isn’t fair to them since there is no ratio of guys being beaten or abused

due to the fact that it isn't as common as it occurring to a woman. An important goal of gender

equality is ending FGM (“End Harmful Practices”). FGM is known as female genital

mutilation. This is where partial or complete removal of the external female genitalia occurs

without medical reasoning, transpiring at girls the age of 15. FGM can result in lifelong health

problems, including the risk of death. FGM is considered a form and act of violence. Activists,

Community Leaders, Doctors, and other experts are attempting to end any and all forms of FGM.

FGM could be spotted in a child marriage situation. Child marriage is where an underage

male/female is forced to marry another (mostly older) person. Thus, leading to the problem of

domestic violence and rape. Causing serious health issues, which should not be inflicted upon

younger ages. Although, every problem comes with a potential solution. GNB (girls not brides)

is a global partnership of civil society organizations from over 70 countries trying to end child

marriage. These people gather together to advocate the laws, policies, and programs to make a

safer, healthier environment for young girls.

Improving the status of women and girls is and will always remain at heart. Taking into

consideration the huge area of gender inequality is shown through sex trafficking. Sex

trafficking is the illegal trafficking of humans for sexual exploitation including sexual slavery.

Sex Trafficking is the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world. Which is worth roughly

100 billion dollars every year. 96% of people who are victims of sex trafficking are young girls

and women. Something that is being done about this wide occurring issue is starting by targeting

the root of the problem, which is the demand for paid sex. This knowledge leads us to find out

where the chain is starting, and is then addressed. Many laws have been changed protecting the

rights of those being harmed by sex trafficking in support of girls and women all around the

world. Sex Trafficking is considered a harmful practice. This is a term used to categorize a form

of violence or discrimination primarily against girls and women, that have been culturally

normalized.

Although many people who spend countless hours worrying about gender inequality

there are few that actually come to terms with the idea to take action. An example of an

organization executing action towards ending gender inequality is known as “Plan International.”

Plan International starts by doing justice to the girls and women who have experienced sexual

violence of any kind currently or in the past since adolescent girls are more vulnerable to things

like rape and sex trafficking. But there are many kinds of other programs that prevent things like

this from happening. Many steps being taken to make sure everyone is being treated equally, all

starts with legal equality. A country's laws can show how the country cares the people in it, and

how its citizens treat each other. When girls or women have less than men or not the same rights

as men, that's when violence and discrimination get legitimized and ignored. One step to success

towards equality now being taken as organizations are using the combination of legal advocacy,

a regional partnership of community, and mobilization to encourage governments to improve

their laws and enforce the laws to protect and promote the rights of women and girls around the

nation.

In conclusion, there are many leading causes of gender inequality toward females.

Which means there's a lot of work to be done to make everything equal and fair to women and

girls of all ages. The issue must be addressed quickly because Women and children are being

tortured, hurt and even killed because of gender inequality. Organizations are making a

difference and doing what needs to be done to promote women to a better standpoint. It's time

for you to do the likewise; actions are said to speak louder than words. What will you do to

make a change?
