UNIT 03

1) The BOD data of a waste water sample is as given below :

Time in days 1 2 4 6 8 10
BOD (mg/lit) 10 18 26 31 33 34
Find : i) Value of ultimate BOD ii) BOD rate constant (By using Thomas method)
2) A city discharges 125 cumecs of sewage in a river which is fully saturated with oxygen
and flows at minimum rate of 1600 cumecs with a minimum velocity of 0.12 m/sec. If the
5-days BOD of sewage is 300 mg/lit, Find out where critical DO will occur in river.
Assume coefficient of purification (Fs) of river as 4.0 and coefficient of D. O. as 0.11 and
ultimate BOD as 125% of 5 day BOD of the mixture of sewage and river stream.
3) Explain self-purification capacity of stream.
4) A wastewater treatment plant disposes off its effluents into a steam at a point A.
Characteristics of steam at a location fairly upstream of A and effluent are as follows :-
Effluent Stream
3
Flow (m /s) 0.16 0.4
D. O. (mg/lit) 1.60 8.20
o
Temperature ( C) 25 22
0
BoD5at20 C(mg/lit) 32 2.0
Assume constants K’ at 200c as 0.20d-1 and R’ at 200c as 0.40d1, (base e) for mixture.
Given saturation DO at mix temperature of 22.860c is 8.85 mg/lit. The velocity of stream
downstream of the point A is 0.16m/s. Determine the critical oxygen deficit and its location use
temperature coefficient of 1.04 for K’ and 1.02 for R’.
5) City discharges sewage at the rate of 1200 lit/sec. into the stream whose minimum
flow is 5000/sec., the temperature of both being 200C. The 5 day BOD at 200C for sewage is
160mg/lit. and that of river water is 2mg/lit. The D.O. content of sewage is zero while that of
stream is 90% of the saturation DO. Find out the degree of treatment required if the minimum
DO to be maintained in the stream is 4m/lit. Assume deoxygenation coefficient as 0.1 and
reoxygenation coefficient as 0.3. Given saturation DO at 200c as 9.17 mg/lit.
6) The data of sewage and stream flow is given below :
Parameter sewage stream
3
Discharge (m /s) 180 1250
BOD5(mg/lit) 215 7
D.O. (mg/lit) 0 9.2
0
The deoxygenation constant (k) at 20 c is 0.12/day
The uniform velocity of flow = 0.3m/sec.
The self purification constant = 3.25
Find the critical D. O. deficit
7) The data of sewage and stream flow is given below :
Parameter sewage stream
Discharge (m3/s) 220 1300
BOD5(mg/lit) 195 8
D. O. (mg/lit) 0 9.17
The deoxygenation constant (k) at 200c is 0.1/day
The uniform velocityof flow = 045 m/sec
The self purification constant = 3.55
