Assignment 2a (Group Assignment) (2011)

Module Title: LEAN OPERATIONS (A-2011/12) Module No: 16-7120-00S

Group Assignment. Involves the researching, submitting and presenting your


findings in groups of THREE or FOUR.

Applications of Lean have been successfully achieved within a variety of industries.


Below is a list some of these industries.

a) Healthcare

b) Pharmaceuticals

c) Banks

d) Accounting

e) Government

f) Defence

g) Logistics

In groups of THREE or FOUR produce a presentation lasting 10 minutes plus 5


minutes for questions and responses. The presentation should cover the following
aspects:
 a detailed case study outlining company background and drivers for
lean implementation
 which tools and techniques were used,
 how were the tools and techniques applied,
 which monitoring and control systems were used focusing on the
benefits achieved.

You must go to our blackboard site and find the section titled discussion board.
Create a new thread posting your name and group members under a topic you
wish to research. i.e. if you want to research healthcare add a thread under the
topic healthcare. To ensure that you gain the maximum benefit from this
assignment only 5 groups will be allowed to present on each topic. Where a
student assigns their group to a topic containing 5 other groups then they
will be assigned a different topic at the discretion of the lecturer.

Conditions of assessment.

 Assignment 2a should be completed in groups of 3 or 4. Groups of 5 or


more are not allowed.
 An electronic copy presentations to be posted on bb presentation on or
before 15 December 10. If this is not submitted on or before this date
the presentation may still take place however there will be a 10%
penalty imposed on the final mark.
 Marks will be awarded for timing. Where the presentation lasts more or
less than the time prescribed, fewer marks will be awarded.
 Marks will be distributed across the group based on an individual's
contribution in completing the task.
 It is expected that all members of the group will be present at the
appropriate presentation. Where a member can not attend they will not
be awarded a mark without prior agreement with the assessing
academic.
 Where an entire group can not present at the appropriate time/date the
presentation must be made before 14 December 11. Where this
condition is not met a mark will be awarded based on the paper copy of
the slides which were submitted, with the mark for this section capped at
40%.
 This assignment is worth 20% of the total assessment load.
 Presentations will take place 15 December and 16 December during the
lecture and tutorials.
