Abstrac
In 1851, Portugal lived a period of political stability that allowed to create the
conditions for the development of a liberal economic model. This influenced society and
culture in the second half of the nineteenth century, becoming known as "Regeneration".
It represents a phase of great transformation of Portuguese society, where the
development of a new social class, whose ideological and political activity would
contribute to broadening the opposition to the regime, to cement the access of the
bourgeoisie to political power and to nobility.
From the fifties, the confrontation between the supporters of the regime and a
group of oppositional intellectuals, young idealists, believing in the possibility of
contributing to the change of course of events, suggest a project of society opposed to
that of the "Regeneration", dependent Of a new concept. However, the regime's ability to
maintain its status meant that almost all intellectuals gave up defending their ideas. It will
be up to the "Generation of 70" to counteract the path of the marasmus that was lived, by
the height of "Regeneration" and to react to ideological and literary immobilism.
