The rules and Language

The judicial system is full of traditions and protocol. If you are to appear in
court, it´s good to know the basics.

Before the judge enters the room, the clerk says ‘All rise’. At this point,
everyone stands up.

You are sworn in by the clerk. Don’t lie when you are under oath. The result is
being charged with perjury.

Speak to the judge clearly and don´t interrupt. Always address the judge as
‘Your Honor’.

You cannot approach the bench. Only lawyers are allowed to enter ‘the well’.
Then they talk to the judge off the record.

Las reglas y el lenguaje

El sistema judicial está lleno de tradiciones y protocolo. Si vas a comparecer

en el tribunal, es bueno saber lo básico.

Antes de que el juez entre en la sala, el empleado dice 'Todos se levantan'.

En este punto, todos se ponen de pie.

Usted es juramentado por el empleado. No mienta cuando está bajo

juramento. El resultado está siendo acusado de perjurio.

Habla con el juez claramente y no interrumpas. Siempre diríjase al juez como

'Su Señoría'.

No puedes acercarte al banco. Solo los abogados pueden ingresar al "pozo".

Attorney: Your Honor, may I have permission to approach the bench?

Judge: You may.

Attorney: Your Honor, I have evidence that this witness attended college with
my client.

Judge: But she just said that she doesn’t know your client.

Attorney: I know. She’s changing her story even though she’s under oath.

Judge: Are you accusing the witness off perjury?

Attorney: Yes. She should be remove and investigated.

Judge: That’s serious. You need to follow protocol to do that.

Juez: Usted puede.

Abogado: Señoría, tengo pruebas de que este testigo asistió a la universidad

con mi cliente.

Juez: Pero ella acaba de decir que no conoce a su cliente.

Abogado: lo sé. Ella está cambiando su historia a pesar de que está bajo
juramento.

Juez: ¿Está acusando al testigo de perjurio?

Abogado: Sí. Ella debería ser removida e investigada.

Juez: Eso es serio. Debe seguir el protocolo para hacer eso.
