The Essence of Discipleship 

Before Jesus ascended, He instructed His disciples to “make disciples of all nations”: 

 Matthew 28:16‐20 (NIV):  16Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain 
where Jesus had told them to go. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some 
doubted. 18Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has 
been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the 
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey 
everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the 
age.” 

Since that time, many people have had the privilege of hearing the gospel. However, it is one thing 
to hear the gospel being preached and another to act upon it.  

That said, what does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus? In essence, it means to follow Him and to be 
His servant: 

 John 12:26 (NLT):  Anyone who wants to be my disciple must follow me, because my 
servants must be where I am. And the Father will honor anyone who serves me. 
 Colossians 3:24 (NLT): Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, 
and that the Master you are serving is Christ. 

Being a disciple means to obey everything that Jesus has commanded: 

 Matthew 28:19‐20a (NIV):  19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them 
in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey 
everything I have commanded you.” 
 John 14:21 (NLT): Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who 
love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and 
reveal myself to each of them." 
 Matthew 7:21 (NLT):  "Not everyone who calls out to me, 'Lord! Lord!' will enter the 
Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 
 1 John 2:3 (NIV): We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands 
 1 John 5:3 (NLT): Loving God means keeping his commandments, and his commandments 
are not burdensome. 
 John 8:31 (NIV):  To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, 
you are really my disciples.  

Being a disciple means that our ultimate goal in life is to become like our master, Jesus Christ, in 
character: 

 Matthew 28:24‐25 (NIV):  24“The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his 
master. 25It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. 
If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his 
household! 
 1 Corinthians 11:1 (NLT):  And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ. 
  Philippians 3:17 (ESV): Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk 
according to the example you have in us. 

Being a disciple means that we no longer live to satisfy the sinful cravings we had before following 
the Lord Jesus: 

 1 Peter 4:1‐3 (NLT): Since Christ has suffered in His body, we must be ready to suffer also. 
Suffering puts an end to sin. 2You should no longer spend the rest of your life giving in to 
the sinful desires of the flesh. But do what God wants as long as you live in this world. 3In 
the past you gave enough of your life over to living like the people who do not know God. 
You gave your life to sex sins and to sinful desires. You got drunk and went to wild parties 
and to drinking parties and you worshiped false gods. 
 John 8:12 (NIV): When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. 
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." 

In fact, being a disciple means that we no longer live for ourselves 

 2 Corinthians 5:15 (NLT):  He died for everyone so that those who receive his new life will no 
longer live for themselves. Instead, they will live for Christ, who died and was raised for 
them. 
 Luke 9:23 (NIV):  Then he said to them all: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny 
themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 
 Romans 14:7‐8 (ESV):  For not one of us lives for himself, and not one dies for himself; for if 
we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or 
die, we are the Lord's. 

Related to the above, being a disciple means that our focus is shifted from self‐love and self‐
absorption to caring for His other disciples 

 John 13:35 (NIV):  By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one 
another. 
 Philippians 2:1‐4 (NLT):  Is there any encouragement from belonging to Christ? Any comfort 
from his love? Any fellowship together in the Spirit? Are your hearts tender and 
compassionate? 2Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, 
loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose. 3Don’t be selfish; 
don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 4Don’t 
look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
