LANGUAGE NEEDS FOR HOTEL STAFF

A. Learning objectives
 Improve their ability to communicate with hotel guests and other staff
 Learn the vocabulary of all the main areas in the hotel
 Gain confidence in using English in the hotel environment
B. Name of project
C. Introduction
English for specific purposes(ESP) implies meticulous research undertaken to
produce pedagogically suitable materials and exercise for mostly adult learners
defined in a specific context (Johns & Dudley-Evans,1991). Tremendous efforts have
been made in different aspects of ESP courses associated with different disciplines,
for example, analysing linguistic features of English used by business men (Nelson,
2006) and hospital staff (Blue & Harun, 2003), assessing the needs of learners
working in textile and clothing felds (Somui & Mead, 2000) and hotel service (Jasso-
Aguilar, 1999) English for hotel staff is a multimedia course designed to provide a
course interactive materials for hotel employed. Each unit covers a particular area of a
hotel’s daily business. checking in and checking out, talking about rooms and hotel
equipment, hotel services such as food and drink, discussing activities, giving advice,
dealing with complaints etc. The course will help students better prepare for their
work experience and internship/placement. In aviation industry, the most prevalent
trainings are for hotel crews, and the language they are required to command is
usually referred to as Aviation English, featuring radiotelephony and operational
procedures. In contrast, Information Desk staff working at hotel mainly relies on
language abilities and communicative skills to tend to all sorts of enquiries and
requests of travelers, and yet very little literature could be found on English courses
tailored for hotel Information Desk staff. Thus this paper addresses how to design a
language course for these hotel workers, fro examining the context, analyzing the
needs and indentifying the objectives, to designing the syllabus and the material, as
well as planning the assessment of the learners and the evaluation of the course.
D. Component of project
I. INTRODUCTION
1. The importance of English ( why is English learned all over the world )

2. Brief review of an ESP approach in syllabus design.

 What is ESP?
ESP is an approach to language teaching in which all decisions as to
content and method are based on the learner’s reason for learning”.
 Why is it preferable in ELT?
ESP approach preferable in current language training because ESP
accommodating learner’s needs and interests, it will make the teaching
meaningful, motivating, and enjoyable. Hence, teacher will be easy what
she/he will be going to do, what will be taught to the learner’s based on
their need.
 What is needs analysis?
Needs can be interpreted into necessities, wants, and lacks. Necessities
(target needs) deal with the demand of the target situations, or
destination of teaching.. Lacks refer to the learner’s existing language
proficiency in order to help determination of starting point of the
teaching and learning process or we can say Lack is what has the learner
already known. To find strength the learners. Whereas Wants is what
would the learners like to gain from the language course (personal
aims/needs) or something that someone to get.
 How to conduct needs analysis?
3. Method of doing needs analysis
 How do you collect the data in conducting needs analysis(NA)
