c a r b o n a t i o n . T h e r e f o r e , t h e first o b j e c t i v e o f t h e w o r k o f R I L E M
Technical C o m m i t t e e T C 1 1 6 - P C D was to prepare a state-of-the-art report
dealing w i t h t h e f o l l o w i n g subjects:

H o w e v e r , d e p e n d i n g o n the o u t c o m e o f the initial studies, concrete p e r m e -
ability m a y be replaced b y other transport characteristics o r combinations
thereof.
Unless stated otherwise i n the individual chapters the considerations
presented i n this report focus o n n o r m a l structural concretes w i t h a
dense structure built up by a continuous cement paste matrix, n o r m a l
weight aggregates and a compressive strength o f the concretes i n an inter-
mediate range. T h e results reported m a y n o t necessarily apply t o concretes
w i t h a s p e c i a l c o m p o s i t i o n o r s t r u c t u r e , e.g. l i g h t w e i g h t c o n c r e t e w i t h a
h o n e y c o m b e d s t r u c t u r e , u s e o f s p e c i a l a g g r e g a t e s o r a d d i t i o n s s u c h as
polymers, o r h a v i n g v e r y h i g h compressive strengths. F o r such materials
the durability m a y be controlled by additional mechanisms. Further-
m o r e , t h e test m e t h o d s described i n this r e p o r t w e r e originally designed
for n o r m a l concretes. T h e i r suitability f o r t e s t i n g special concretes is
uncertain.

T h e experimental results reported o n concrete transport parameters
m a y significantly d e p e n d o n t h e test procedure a n d t h e test c o n d i t i o n s
chosen i n the respective investigation. F o r f u r t h e r use o f these transport
coefficients, e.g. as i n p u t data i n n u m e r i c a l calculations o r p r e d i c t i o n
models, reference should b e made t othe original publication i n order t o
check o n the test conditions that lead t o the r e p o r t e d values.
