Background :
Osteoporosis is defined as a systemic skeletal disease characterized by a low bone mass and micro-
architectural deterioration of the bone tissue with a consequent increase in bone fragility and
susceptibility to fracture. Little is known regarding the effects of changing body composition on
bone mineral density (BMD). However, increasing fat mass (FM) improves BMD in young women
with anorexia nervosa. This study aimed to assess association between body Fat Mass and Frax
score in autoimmune disease patient’s
Methods :
the study was conducted in September 2018 at the Rheumatology Clinic, Moewardi Hospital.
Inclusion criteria were patients with SLE and Rheumatoid Arthrtitis. Criteria for exclusion are
fractures, chronic kidney disease, diabetes. Body fat mass examination using HBF 500 omron body
measurement, fracture risk assessment tool (FRAX®)was obtained by checklist without doing
bone mass densitometry. Statistical test with perason correlation test. P is significant if p <0.05
Results : There were 20 study patients, 10 lupus and 10 rheumatoid arthritis, female sex,
mean age 45.3 + 12.5 years. Using FRAX tool, we found that the 10-year probability of a major
osteoporotic fracture (FRAX-Major ≥20%) average was 4,8 + 4,98% while the 10-year probability
of hip fracture (FRAX-Hip ≥3%) average was 0,61 + 1,23%. The average body fat mass is 28,79+
18,06 %. There was negative correlation between body fat mass and FRAX-Major (p=0,039, r=-
0,203) and FRAX-hip (p=0,023, r=-0,281)
Conclusion : Increased body fat mass increases the risk of fracture in patients with autoimmune
disease
