The key to the PROVALVE tray is its
unique valve design.The tapered valve
cover imparts a forward-lateral push to
the liquid across the tray, improving liquid
distribution while at the same time pro-

sheltered valve design also provides
greater open area and better turndown
than conventional sieve trays.

SATURN
Technology
®
The patented technology that Koch-Glitsch calls “Saturn” can be used to reduce
the total installed cost of new distillation columns, especially those containing
multi-pass crossflow trays. The combination of simple tower attachments and an
innovative tray design equates to a lower total installed cost.
Previous Index Next
Up until now, the sole disadvantage of the use of crossflow trays in new towers has been the extra complexity
of the tray support structure/grid inside the towers. With conventional crossflow tray designs, horizontal ring
segments support the tray decks, and vertical bolting bars support the tray downcomers. The utilization of this
support structure requires time and money
When you can especially since all of the ring and bar pieces needs
Why do this?
do THIS! to be engineered, fabricated, installed and welded.
The net result is that the Saturn technology provides the buyers of new distillation columns
with the ultimate low-cost installed solution.

Introduction Previous Index Next
Chemical processors and petroleum refiners around the world are familiar
with the name INTALOX®. INTALOX is a "family" of tower packing
designs that sets the standard wherever process towers are equipped with
random or structured packing to effect heat or mass transfer. At the heart
of these designs is the INTALOX® Metal Tower Packing or IMTP® High
Performance Random Packing family. INTALOX Metal Tower Packing is the
first random packing designed especially for use in distillation operations.
The advantages realized in distillation have been abundantly applied in
absorption, stripping, liquid-liquid extraction and direct contact heat trans-
fer operations as well. Since its introduction in the late 1970’s, IMTP pack-
ing has been successfully used in thousands of mass transfer towers with
diameters ranging from 6 inches to 40 feet [150 mm–12m]. Simultaneously,
a line of high performance tower internals was developed to ensure the
maximum performance of each packed tower is achieved. Koch-Glitsch
engineers have extensive experience applying these technologies to a vari-
ety of processes, providing the best solution for each situation.
This booklet provides information for quick sizing of packed columns using
INTALOX Metal Tower Packing. The following charts provide information
for hydraulic ratings and relative packing efficiencies in terms of HETP based
on a standard hydrocarbon test system as well as KGa values for the absorp-
tion of CO2. In addition, Koch-Glitsch offers the hydraulic rating program,
KG-TOWER™ Software, that may be downloaded from the website.

FLEXIPAC structured packing is available in a variety of cor-
rugation crimp sizes, each at two inclination angles. The "Y"
designated packings have a nominal inclination angle of 45º
from the horizontal, and are the most widely used. The "X"
packings have a nominal inclination angle of 60° from hori-

drop are the overwhelming requirements for a specific
application. The benefit of the "X" packings is that they pro-

Severe Services

Introduction Previous Index Next
Many refining separation processes as well as several fouling, the column operating conditions (temperature,
petrochemical and chemical processes are subject pressure, etc.) should be carefully optimized. In addition,
to severe operating conditions such as fouling, coking, it is often important to ensure that the mass transfer

rience.
Fouling Mechanisms
In order to properly design internals for severe services,
it is important to first identify the potential for the
severe conditions and then, develop a clear understand-
ing of the nature or cause of the problem. It is some-
times possible to modify operating conditions or the
process scheme to minimize the potential hazard.
However, in many cases the severe conditions cannot
be eliminated and the equipment has to be designed
accordingly.
Not all solids behave in the same manner inside the col-
umn. Solids in crystalline form are often easily removed
with sufficient liquid flow. Other solids, like coke and
polymers, once formed will stick to the mass transfer
device and will grow like a cancer. Performance (capaci-
ty, pressure drop and efficiency) of the equipment deteri-
orates over time as the amount of solids accumulate.

Column Upsets
The operating conditions of some columns contain a
high risk for upsets or surges. A crude oil distillation
column with stripping steam is a good example of an
application that is subject to frequent upsets. The pres-
ence of any water (liquid phase) in the stripping steam
will result in a massive expansion of the volumetric flow
upon vaporization. This can create an upset force capa-
ble of damaging the tower internals, which will reduce
or completely eliminate equipment performance.
