Week 8: Pressure Measurement
Vocabulary
Atmospheric pressure: The pressure exerted by the weight of the atmosphere on a body. At sea level, 1
atmospheric pressure = 101.3 kPa.
Gauge pressure: The amount by which the pressure measured in a fluid exceeds that of atmospheric
pressure.
Absolute pressure: The pressure which is zero referenced against a perfect vacuum. It is equal to the
gauge pressure plus the atmospheric pressure.
Hydrostatic pressure: The pressure exerted by a fluid at equilibrium at a given point in the fluid due to
the force of gravity.
Hydrostatic force: The force exerted on a submerged body due to the pressure of a fluid at rest.
Piezometer: A device used to measure the pressure of a fluid in a pipe by measuring the height to which
the fluid will rise against gravity.
Differential manometer: A device which is used to measure the difference in pressure of a fluid at two
different places. The simplest differential manometer is U‐shaped. height of the high pressure and the
low pressure of a fluid in a pipe.
Inverted differential manometer: A device used to measure small pressure differences in fluids.
