GENERAL

The purpose of the calculations presented here bellow, is to verify the adequacy of the wall thickness of the plastic pipes
(HDPE)

The calculations have been performed according to ASME B31.1 (Power Piping Code), par. N-104

These calculations do not substitute the analytical stress analysis calculations required to verify the feasibility of the systems
and the branch reinforcements adequacy, according to the proper Stress Intensification Factors.

B. MINIMUM WALL THICKNESS CALCULATION

PRELIMINARY
In order to calculate the reinforcement required, the required minimum wall thickness of the branch and the header pipe shall
be calculated according to par. 104.1.2(A) of ASME B31.1.

The minimum thickness of pipe wall required in order the pipe to withstand the internal design pressure is:

tm = t + c

where,
tm = minimum required thickness, including allowances for mechanical strength
t = the internal pressure design thickness, according to the following equations

=𝐷/ (equation 2 - for thermoplastic pipes)

((2𝑆_𝑎)/𝑃+1)

=𝐷/ (equation 3 - for reinfroced thermosetting resign - laminated pipes)

((2𝑆_𝑏)/𝑃+1)

=𝐷/ (equation 4 - for reinfroced thermosetting resign - filament wound and

((2𝐹𝑆_𝑐)/𝑃+1 centrifugally cast pipes)
)

D = outside diameter of pipe

internal design gage pressure, which is never less than the maximum sustained operating pressure (MSOP)
P =
within the piping system including the effects of static head (see ASME B31.1, par. 101.2.2)

F = service design factor acc. to par. N-102.3.1 (b.3)

c = the sum of the mechanical allowances (thread or groove depth) plus erosion and/or corrosion allowances the
manufacturer's minus tolerance for product wall thickness
Sa,Sb,Sc = design stresses, from table N-102.2-1(A) - 1, 2 and 3 respectively
