INTRODUCTION

Soils are essential for life, in the sense that they provide the medium for plant growth habitat for
many insects and other organisms it act as a filtration system for surface water and maintenance
of atmospheric gases.

It is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, liquids, and organisms that together
support life. Earth's body of soil is the pedosphere, which has four important functions: it is a
medium for plant growth; it is a means of water storage, supply and purification; it is a modifier
of Earth's atmosphere; it is a habitat for organisms; all of which, in turn, modify the soil.
(Miguel, 2015)

One of the essential part of the soil is it plays an important role in agriculture, It provides the
nutrients for the crops. The nutrients moves from the soil to plant that we eat like tomatoes. In
the end, we benefit from healthy soils. The healthiest soils produce the healthiest and most
abundant food supplies.

Determining soil properties is necessary, it will show us nutrients content of the soil. Through
soil sampling it can show soil moisture content and soil porosity. Soil moisture content is the
amount of water contained in soil where it carries the nutrients from the soil that will be absorb
by the plants. Soil porosity is the amount of open spaces between the particles influences. It
shows how easily water moves through a soil and how much water will be hold.

As an activity in AE 122 ( Irrigation and Drainage Engineering) the students need to determine
the properties of soil in Bataan Peninsula State University-Abucay Campus in order to determine
the soil content for the crop production.

Statement of the Problem

In Bangkal Abucay, Bataan one of the major problem is the crop production some students in
BPSU-Abucay Campus studied the crops that are appropriate to produce on the inclined area in
Bangkal.

Objectives of the Study

The general objective of this study is to determine the soil types and characteristics in Bataan
Peninsula State University-Abucay Campus. This study also aim to :

1. Asses the soil moisture content and determine the soil porosity of BPSU-Abucay
Campus.
2. Enumerate the different procedures in identifying soil moisture and soil porosity.
3. Apply the concept in the production of different agricultural crops in terms of irrigation
application.
Importance of the Study

Through the determination of Soil Moisture Content and Porosity it will help the farmers to
produce crops on slope type area in BPSU Abucay Campus.

Time and Place of the Study

The study will be held in BPSU Abucay Campus on September 13 to Septmer 17 2018.
