Modified Solenoid Valve (ME/ME-C Engines) S907-0006

Appendix to MAN Diesel instruction book.

Solenoid valve (pos. 51) in the starting air system has been modified.

Why:

Service experience from ME/ME-C engines in operation has shown a few cases where the
solenoid valve (pos. 51) in the starting air system has failed to operate correctly.

The malfunction has been located to be a failing pilot valve on the main pneumatic valve,
caused by impurities in the 30 bar starting air which get stuck in the small air passages in the
pilot valve.

To eliminate this failure risk, the better-filtered 7 bar air of the manoeuvring/control air is used
for the pilot part of the solenoid valve.

This requires disconnection of the internal 30 to 7 bar throttle air line inside the solenoid valve,
and connection of a new 7 bar control air supply line to the new pilot valve.

This modification has now (when you recieve this text) been carried out by the MAN Diesel
service engineer.

How:

The position of the valve (pos. 51) is shown in Fig. 1.

The service engineer has blocked the internal supply, replaced the 30 bar pilot valve with a 10
bar (max.) pilot valve, and replaced the O-rings between the pilot valve and the main valve for
correct function with 7 bar pressure.

A pilot air copper pipe has been drawn from the existing 7 bar control air line to the top of the
solenoid valve Fig. 2.

Spares:

This modification has already been implemented on new solenoid valves ordered.
