Why is the national security groups important?
Interest groups are one important mechanism through which citizens in the United States make
their ideas, needs, and views known to elected officials. Citizens can usually find an interest group
that focuses on their concerns, no matter how specialized they may be. Directories of American
voluntary associations reveal the incredible variety of reasons why citizens band together. The
Gale Research. Encyclopedia of Associations is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive
lists. Not all of these groups are politically active, but a great many try to influence public policy.

A second feature of the system that encourages interest groups is the decentralization of political
power to states and localities, known as the federal system, or "federalism." Citizen associations
often get started at the state and local levels, later combining into national organizations.
Decentralization thus encourages a greater variety of interest groups. It also further weakens the
party system, because the social and economic diversity of the 50 states make strict party
discipline difficult.
Responsibilities for national security.
An interest group is not a of fringe group operating on the outskirts of the United States political system,
but rather a viable, accepted form of public representation that may be courted by candidates and political
parties. Public interest groups support causes that they believe benefit everyone. Animal rights
organizations like Mercy for Animals are a type of interest group; they stand for the elimination of animal
cruelty.

Greenpeace is a well-known environmental interest group. It has had victories in pressuring lawmakers,
including the passing of the Billfish Conservation Act, which stopped the U.S. from importing billfish after
previously being the biggest importer; President Barack Obama signed it into law in 2012.
