SEISMIC DESIGN OF A TYPICAL 10 STORIED OFFICE BUILDING

USING RESPONSE SPECTRUM ANALYSIS PROCEDURE
Seismic design of a typical 10 storied office building using static lateral force procedure was
carried out first before design through response spectrum analysis.

Given data:

f c’ = 3000 psi fy = 60,000 psi

Finishes load = 35 psf Partitions load = 20 psf

Live load = 50 psf Story Height = 12 ft

Assume rigid floors and masses lumped at floor level only.

A short summary of Seismic Design using Static Lateral Force Procedure:

Loads calculations of moment resisting frame

Slabs
Load = 849.6 kips
Beams
Load = 129.6 kips
Columns

As per ACI-318 column sizes are found out and ssing practical engineering approach taking
column sizes as:

 Column of 21" x 21" for stories 1, 2 and 3

 Column of 18" x 18" for stories 4 to 7
 Column of 15" x 15" for stories 8, 9 and 10

Self-load of columns

a) 21" x 21" w = 1.75 * 1.75 * 150 = 459.375 lb/ft

b) 18" x 18" w = 1.5 * 1.5 * 150 = 337.5 lb/ft
c) 15" x 15" w = 1.25 * 1.25 * 150 = 234.375 lb/ft

Calculation of total weight at floor levels was done and time period, base shear and story
shear was found out. The same thing in carried out in Etabs and design for seismic load
using all load combination.

Assumed column beam cross sections for gravity design failed under seismic loading when
checked via structure design software ETABS 9.7.1.

Updation of design after trials

Loads calculations of moment resisting frame

Columns

Using practical engineering approach taking column sizes results as:

 Columns of 30" x 30" and 27" x 27" for stories 1 and 2

 Columns of 27" x 27" for story 3
 Columns of 27" x 27" and 24" x 24" for story 4
 Columns of 24" x 24" for stories 5, 6 and 7
 Columns of 21" x 21" for story 8
 Column of 18" x 18" for stories 9 to 10
Sadia Afzal
MCE163003

Self-load of columns

a) 30" x 30" w = 2.5 * 2.5 * 150 = 937.5 lb/ft

b) 27" x 27" w = 2.25 * 2.25 * 150 = 759.375 lb/ft
c) 24" x 24" w = 2 * 2 * 150 = 600 lb/ft
d) 21" x 21" w = 1.75 * 1.75 * 150 = 459.375 lb/ft
e) 18" x 18" w = 1.5 * 1.5 * 150 = 337.5 lb/ft

Base shear using simplified static load procedure

1) Time Period as per UBC Section 1630.2

TA = Ct (hn)3/4 UBC-97 (30-8)

TA = 0.030 (120)3/4 = 1.088 sec
And
TB = 1.3TA UBC-Section 1630.2.2
TB = 1.3 * 1.088 = 1.414 sec > 0.7sec
Ft (force at top of structure) will be computed
Sadia Afzal
MCE163003

2) Base Shear as per UBC Section 1630.2

Cv = 0.32 as Na = 1.0 (for zone 4 and Soil profile SA)

Ca = 0.32 as Na = 1.0
I=1
R = 8.5
T = 1.414 sec
W = 11290.575 kips
V = 0.32 x 1 x 11290.575 / (8.5 x 1.414) = 300.61 kips
Maximum Shear

V max = 2.5 * 0.32 * 1 * 11290.575 / 8.5 = 1162.64 kips

Minimum Shear

V max = 0.11 * 0.32 * 1 * 11290.575 = 397.43 kips

Minimum Shear for zone 4

V min = 0.8 * 0.4 * 1 * 11290.575 / 8.5 = 425 kips (governing)

3) Force at top of structure

Since T > 0.7 sec
Ft = 0.07 * T * V
Ft = 0.07 * 1.414 * 425= 42 kips
Total base shear = 425 + 42 = 467 kips

4) Story wise base shear distribution

matrix and displacement column vector
Sadia Afzal
MCE163003

Dynamic Procedure
For the fundamental period (Mode 1), the site specific spectral acceleration obtained from
the curve is as
Sa = 90.8 inches/sec2

The effective modal weight is given by

WE = (Σ Wi Фi)2 / Σ Wi Фi2

Level Wi Фi Wi * Фi Wi * Фi2 Fx V
10 1057.8 0.06699 70.8648 4.74742 11.4652 11.4652

Σ= Σ= Σ= Σ=
11290.6 2101.48 417.418 340

WE = (Σ Wi Фi)2 / Σ Wi Фi2
= 10579.84

As a percentage of the total structure weight, the effective weight is

100[WE]/W = 100 * 10579.84 / 11290.6

= 93.7%

In order to obtained the effects from 90% of the total structure weight as required by UBC
Section 1631.5.2 only fundamental mode is enough in this case.

The total base shear is given by

VD = WE Sa /g
= 2486.15 kips
Sadia Afzal
MCE163003

The governing static base shear is

V = 425 kips
The minimum allowable base shear for a regular structure using a site specific response spectrum
in accordance with UBC Section 1631.5.2, is given by the maximum value of

V = 0.8 * VS
= 340 kips…..controls
OR
V = VD / R
= 292.49 kips

Thus, the design lateral force at each level is given by

Fx = V * Wi * Фi / Σ Wi Фi)
= 340 * Wi * Фi / 2101.48
= 0.16179 * Wi * Фi
Fx for each level is given in table above.

Hence, the scaling factor for the dynamic analysis results is

r = 0.8 * VS / VD
= 340 / 2486.15
= 0.14
