PROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

1 . GENERAL

This Document shall not be used as a basis for manufacture and supply of
original and replacement parts to AIRBUS INDUSTRIE unless specifically
required in a contract or purchase agreement .

This Manufacturing Instruction deals with the cleaning of components or

assemblies with cold cleaning agents (solvents) .

According to this instruction, components or assemblies can be cleaned

which would otherwise be unsuitable for other cleaning processes .

Preliminary cleaning can take place (e .g . as part of the process according

to PMS 01-01-03) .

The process must be applied when cleaning according to PMS 01-01-16 is

specified on the worksheet, or where cleaning according to this instruction
is specified in other specifications .

The planning engineer must additionally specify the respective supplementary

sheet when filling out the instruction sheet .

2. EQUIPMENT, MAT ERIALS, PERSONNEL

2 .1 Workshops

Rooms in which cold cleaning agents are used must comply with the speci-
fications for handling combustible and non-combustible liquids . The danger
categories relating to combustibility and lower toxic limits must be
observed and maintained .

2 .2 Equipment

2 .2 .1 Containers

The following must be available :

" Storage container for storage

" Service container for cleaning (e .g . spray bottle)

Collecting container for contaminated cleaning agent

and

" Collecting container for used cleaning materials such as cloths etc .

The containers must be made of a cleaning agent resistant material and

must be provided with a lid . For keeping or storing used cleaning
cloths, containers with lids must be available, which comply with the
saftey regulations .

All containers must specify their contents .

2 .2 .2 Cleaning agent

Only the products listed in the supplementary sheets of this instruction

may be used .

2 .2 .3 Brushes

Only solvent-resistant brushes may be used (check before use) .

2 .2 .4 Cleaning cloths

Light cleaning cloths of washed cotton must be used .

However, absorbent, solvent-resistant paper cloths (nonwoven fabrics) can

also be used .

If it is not possible to determine whether cloths are made of pure

cotton, it must be ensured before each use that the cleaning agent to be
used does not dissolve the cloth . Cloths which are not resistant to
solvents must not be used in surface treatment .

2 .3 Components

Non-metallic components may only be treated with the cleaning agents

specified in Table 1, when they are permanently hardened .

Titanium components may only be cleaned with chloritic cold cleaning

agents (Data Sheet 2 or 7), when these components are not heated after
cleaning (during manufacture and/or use) to a temperature in excess of
200°C, or where additional cleaning with alkaline according to
PMS 01-01-03 takes place, or where already surface protected titanium
components (galvanic, anodic, paint coat) are cleaned in final assembly .

PROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

3 .1 .1 Dry pre-cleaning

Where there is heavy fouling through solvent-insoluble substances (e .g .

dust), pre-cleaning can be done with dry cloths or dry, soft brushes,
which are soft enough to avoid producing scratches, ridges, marks etc .
on the surface .

3 .1 .2 Wet pre-cleaning

Where subsequent cleaning is carried out according to Para . 3 .2 or

PMS 01-01-03, the cloths can be dipped instead of being soaked by pou-
ring . The use of wetting containers is admissible when it has been
ensured that contamination through the return flow of cold cleaning agent
is avoided .

3 .2 Cleaning

3 .2 .1 Cleaning in dip tanks

Cleanig with cold cleaning agents in dip tanks can be combined with a
spraying device . A rinsing action is achieved, which removes adhering
residues more easily . Solvent-insoluble, non-swelling plastic abrasive
compounds, which float in the cleaning solution and remove adhering dirt
mechanically by friction can also be used .

The dip tanks must be provided with distilling apparatus, which can be
used to treat the heavily contaminated cold cleaning agent by distilla-
tion . In addition, an extractor system and blower zone (dry zone) must
also be provided (applies for conveyor belt or small-component manufactu-
re) .

3 .2 .2 Cleaning with cleaning cloths

The components must be wiped with a cloth soaked in cleaning agent in

such a way that all treated areas are well moistened . The cloths must be
turned frequently during use and renewed, so as to avoid an accumulation
of loosened or dissolved layers on the cloth . Cloths must be soaked by
pouring over cleaning agent from a service container . The dipping of
cloths is inadmissible . The still moist areas must be dried with cloths
made of cotton, which must be turned frequently during use .

3 .2 .3 Cleaning with a brush

Only small areas at a time must be moistened with the brush and dried as
described in Para . 3 .2 .2 . Th e brush is soaked by frequent dipping in
cleaning agent .

©AIRBUS INDUSTRIE
PROCESS AND MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

The cleaning agent in service containers must be renewed frequently, as

it quickly becomes contaminated through constant dipping of the brush .
The use of two service containers is recommended, one for pre-cleaning
and the other for subsequent cleaning .

NOTE : Cleaning according to Para . 3 .2 .2 and 3 .2 .3 is completed when

cloths used for drying or subsequent wiping show no signs of
dirt .

The areas cleaned according to Para . 3 .2 must subsequently have

an even, clean appearance .

3 .3 Further treatment

Cleaned components must be passed as quickly as possible to the following

operation or appropriately stored, in order to keep them in a clean condi-
tion .

Where the next operation consists of coating with an organic coating, the
components may only be handled with clean, cotton gloves .

4. QUALI TY REQUIREMENTS

The following tests must be carried out by quality assurance, unless

otherwise specified in the production documents .

Test Object Frequency of test - Tests -

Ramdom sampling,
Component Visual inspection

according to Para . 4 .1
day

Cold cleaning Visual inspection

At least once a day
agent (solvent) according to Para . 4 .2

4 .1 Testing of components

The quality of Cleaning must be monitored in a visual inspection in the

normal course of work at the discretion of quality assurance . The compo-
nent is considered adequately cleaned when the treated surface has an
even, clean appearance, or when a clean cloth used for subsequent wiping
shows no signs of dirt .

4 .2 Testing of the cold cleaning agent

The previously described cold cleaning agent must be visually inspected

for contamination and discoloration at the discretion of quality assuran -
ce, however at least once a day . These visual inspections must be carried
out several times a day for larger throughput .

Where inconsistencies occur, 0 .5 Liters cold cleaning agent must be taken

from each the storage and the service container and sent to the material
testing Laboratory .

Testing method

Where a mistake is suspected : " Determination of the density

" Determination of the boiling point

" Determination of the evaporation rate

Where contamination is suspected : " Determination of the solid residue

from evaporation
