StepJ?_in' Into the Millennium
Past) fj ~~~ n l J and Future ...
Albert Einstein, Harriet
Tubman, Amelia Earhart,
Wolfgang Mozart, Neil
Armstrong, Babe Ruth, Mother
Teresa, and J.F.K .... These are
just a few of the heroes,
geniuses, and important role
models of the last millennium.
This group of people, along
with thousands of others have
become legends in the minds
and memories of people
everywhere. While these
people will be remembered
forever in history books and
people's hearts, there will soon
be a new group of role models
that will be recognized in
newspapers, television
broadcasts, and beauty shops
everywhere. These leaders of
tomorrow are fellow students
today.
Dinner Theater singers, Rachel Shoemaker,
Melissa Chadwick, and Jade Enokido step
back into the 50's.

Could these chemistry students,

Wayne Lyon, Jared Tomlinson, and
Amy Shewmaker, be future inventors
or scientists? You never know.

Hangin ' Out In Buffalo
We all have certain places we like to hang out. Places where we can kick back,
relax, and be ourselves. If you go cruising around Buffalo on a Saturday night, you
will probably see students at Sonic, Dairy Queen, Courtyard Video, or the Square
just "chillin." The concept of hanging out has been around for quite some time. In
fact, if you asked your parents they could probably tell you some wild stories about
themselves when they were young. Through the same concept when we step into
the future we will probably see our children hang out and tell them some of our
stories. Hanging out, though, has always been a favorite pasti g students
and as long as we have stress and other proble a place we
can call our home away from ho

STORY AND LAYOUT BY JOSEPH GREEN

"When one door closes, another opens, but we look so long and
so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one that has
opened for us."ln these words Alexander Graham Bell describes what is
happening with our students today. Nowhere else is this more apparent
than right here at Buffalo High School.
Many Students have opened these doors and are steppin' through
them. Let's take Amy Prater for example. This extremely talented
sophomore has been into the fine arts since she was a little child.
Amy and her family received the chance to open for Kevin
Spencer and also received a contract with Dawning Records. Out of the
deal they received the chance to join a singing troupe called American
Kids. After this they sang one song on a ten song disk with Kevin
Spencer. She sings regularly at such places as: THE GAZEBO in Silver
Dollar City, Remington Theatre, Barbara Fairchild Theatre, and the
Golden Age Games.
Another of the many talents include Rachel Shoemaker. Rachel
has been dancing and singing for many years now. Rachel participated
in the Nutcracker at Hammonds Hall as the Chinese Ribbon Girl. She
also took second place in the National Starpower Dance Competition.
Rachel has sung at the Springfield and State Fairs for many years. In
1992 Rachel was accepted into the Southwest Missouri Youth Choir as
an alto.
Our two senior band potentials definitely cannot be left out.
Gabriel McMillan has been playing guitar for the past two years. In this
time he has already played with the local band 2 CHIX A SEAL. Gabe
soon hopes to play at the Coker Coffee Company and plans to pursue
coffee shop performances.
Jesse Johnston our other band hopeful, has played in bands with
Coach Bouma, Coach Willis, Michael Showers, Matt Boggs, Grady
Johnson, and Steve VanNostrand. He sings at his local church and
plans to pursue a career in music later in life.
Fine arts aren't the only talents shown by students here at Buffalo
High School. Ricky Rose raises cattle inside and outside of school.
Ricky has competed in Stock Competitions where he has received many
first place prizes. Ricky says that taking care of his cattle is an everyday
chore, and it takes a lot of patience and time.
There are many talented people here at Buffalo High. Just don't
forget that the door is opening, all you need to do is step through.

Class of 2000
Steppin'Ou
SENIOR DIVISION 13
Kelly Armstrong

As the class of 2000 looks back from
elementary school to the present we
think to ourselves, "Where has all the
time gone?" We have gone from
playing at recess in elementary, to
learning new locker combinations in
middle school, to preparing for college
in high school. What ever happened to
laying back and taking it easy our
senior year? Instead, we are trying to
raise our ACT scores just a few more
points, putting in our last few
applications for colleges and
scholarships, and trying to spend time
with friends that we will never forget.
However, the time we have spent
together will be cherished for years to
come. As the senior class steps into
the millennium, we hold with us
memories that will last us a lifetime.

Story by Luke 0. Charlton
Eric Cook
We have been called "the class of the future," but
that is no longer true. We are the class of today.
We went through all the same things as the past
classes have, such as extreme stress, tardies, and
college or job searches. We had a few extra
things, too. For example, the Y2K hype, but that
got more annoying than frightening. Here are a
few thoughts on the class of 2000.

Amanda Dill Justin Donaldson

"Despite how the media calls us Generation X, I
believe we will be one of the most successful
generations."

Sam Cherry

"The odd years are not often remembered, but who

could forget the class of 2000?"

Chris Goins
Erin Enlund Jade Enokido

"When we were in grade school, we couldn't even

imagine the year 2000, or graduating. Now the
time is here, to go out into the world and
accomplish all of our dreams.
Good luck class of 2000."

The trip has been unique for each of us. For some, it has been a long
and rocky road. For others, the experience seems far too short, but for
most of us, it's been a path of ups and downs that has brought us to this
point. We've each learned different lessons and experienced different
things, and as we leave, we'll each take a different collection of memories
with us.
One memory that will hold a place in
everyone's heart though, will be the memory of the
last step we ook together as a class. On Friday,
May 19, 2000, we all stood together, not as 160
completely different people, but as a clas , as
Buffalo High School's class of 2000. We choked
back tears as we remembered the good times
along with the bad. We reminisced about the times
spent on the benches before and after school,
about weekend road trips, and about ball games
and dances. We looked back at the fights between
friends and the stress-filled hours spent cramming
for next hour's test. We remembered senior trip
and our last day of classes, and we told ourselves
that we would never forget those precious
memories. "Being elected to lead the
senior class of the year
As we accepted our diplomas and said our 2000, has been one of
farewells, we realized that now it's time for each of the most honorable
us to set off on our own, to follow our own individual experiences during my
high school career."

FOOTBALL FESTIVAL 43
A simple love story, a spirited musical and a cultural awakening. "Camelot" is a musical that was
derived from the old tale of the legendary King Arthur.
After doing some background research on the characters in the play, Mrs. Beckner and the Buffalo
High School Drama department went to work on this exhausting musical. Three weeks of rough , time
consuming efforts went into the rehearsing of this musical.
"In order to show the audience that you are in the story you have to become the character that you
are portraying ," said Michelle Dugas, who played the part of Guinnevere. It was
definately noticeable when she came out on the stage for the first time. The crowd
held their breath for this beautiful maiden.
The authentic costumes were made by the mothers of the cast and also by
many of the cast members themselves.
Of course the musical would not have been anything without the guidance
of one very special teacher named Mary Lou Beckner.

44 MUSICAL
Taking a break from the musical portion of the theatre, the Buffalo Drama
Department put on a very enthusiastic show called , "Good Help Is So Hard To
Murder."
This play wasn 't just any ordinary show. This was a special preformance
called a farce. A farce is a play that is meant to to have a serious plot, but it
often takes many different comical turns.
The High School Drama students, along with Mrs. Beckner always begin
practices two to three months before the show in order to make sure
that everything goes smoothly on opening night.
Although there is a very heavy load of work that comes
along with being in the cast of a production , it isn't just all work.
The learning experience which you receive out of this is an
experience that will stick with you no matter what career path you
decide to choose .
The play that was put on was about two sisters. One of the
sisters is very up tight and thinks that the maid needs to die

because she knows too

many of the family's
secrets. The other sister
hasn't got a clue what is
going on in the house
because she forgets
everyhting within a very
short time of hearing it.
~~~~~~--.....
With the two clashing characteristics it makes for a very interesting and hysterical comedy that the whole
family loves.
The Drama Department has made a very large cultural impact on the small town of Buffalo. Without
the guidance of Mrs. Beckner, many students would have never been able to see a live musical or a live
play.
Mrs. Beckner has been in the buisness of theatrics for many years. In the time that she has been in
the business she has had a chance to work with many wonderful actors, such as John Goodman. She was
also the narrator in the professional version of "Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat."
There is no doubting the fact that she expects nothing but the best from all of her students, but she
does it with good intentions. She is a wonderful teacher and an excellent mentor for any teenager who is
going to go into the field of acting.
So here is a "shout out" to Mrs.Beckner. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A Few Steps Taken
A Few More To Go
Sophomores have taken a
few steps down the road to
graduation but, still have a few
more to go. For some it will be
easy and for some not so easy.
This year is the year that most
will get their drivers' license and
start to drive. That is another
big step along the road to
bigger and better things.
Hopefully while going through
t-he changes and trying to better
ourselves we will be safe and
have lots of fun through the
year and years to come.
ETTIN' NVOLV
Ten years from now, when
you look back on your high school
career, what memories do you
think you will cherish the most?
Will it be those memories of sitting
in class everyday reading chapter
after chapter in your text books, or
will it be the memories of the great
times you had and important
lessons you learned during after-
school activities?
Most people would agree that
their memories of extra curricular
activities have made much more
important impressions on them
than those of studying and doing
homework.
When we participate in school
activities we gain experience that
will prove useful later on in life,
and we become better people by
volunteering and making a
difference in our communities.
While many people say that they
join clubs and pay dues only to
have a lengthy resume, activities
often give us much more than that.
NHS members love volunteering their time as ARCH
tutors.
The pin is made. The winner is
moments that we all remember in
an athlete's career. We remember
the times that he was triumphant
along with the challenges that he
didn't quite meet. This record of
strides and scuff marks can never
be forgotten.
The times we don't remember
though, possibly the times we
didn't even see, are the moments
that made that athlete. The hours
of practice, the sacrifices made, the
dreams, and the motivations are
often forgotten. Behind each
intimidating facade, the face of a
true athlete is shaped by effort and
love for the game. These faces are
the faces of the people we've
grown to know over the years.
These are the faces of our peers
and teammates.
As the days of summer drew to a close twenty-two Lady Bison took
to the softball field. Lead by two new coaches, eight strong seniors,
and many new goals; the Lady Bison came through. Their season
ended with a seven game winning streak. They came out with
major victories over Branson, Willard, and Republic, which gave them
confidence and respect going into the District Tournament. They won
the district playoffs at Versailles, and advanced to sectionals against
Marshfield at Ozark. The Lady Bison played well, but came up short.
Despite the loss the Bison's season ended victoriously. The season can
best be summed up in the words of Coach Brad Roweton,
season started off with a win over Central in the Buffalo
Tournament. This win started off the season on the right foot.
When asked about the season, Junior Brad Roll stated, "We
haven't used our potential, we started off slow, but we have
the talent to be one of the best teams in our conference."
The Freshman and Junior Varsity teams had a lot of
young talent that will continue to improve for next year. When
asked what his most memorable moment was this season,
Freshman Eric Beltz said, " Starting the Junior Varsity game
The 1999-2000 dance team
Story by dance team member Lauren Stroup
Patience, dedication, hardwork, determination, and a little bit of talent is
all that is required of a dance team member. Many girls have tried, but only
about half of them make it through each year.
With girls at every skill level, patience is needed to make it through
even one practice. Patience is also needed at those times when someone
forgets their poms or the music just isn't willing to cooperate.
Dedication is needed when things are not going the way you would like
them to, and it takes all you have not to give up. A really dedicated dancer
sticks with it whether they like the dance, instructor, or other members or not.
The dancers attend three hour and a half practices each week. They perform on
top of that two or three times a week. Some of the dances they learn have to be
done in just a couple of days. This is just the tip of the iceberg of the amount of
hardwork that is put into every dance.
114 SPORTS
Willis getting ready to do a little
dance.
Determination. A dancer can not let anything stand time.
in her way. She should always be striving to do and
become the best she can be.
Talent comes in many forms. Some dancers are
perfectionists and must have every action on the correct
beat. Others just like to shake their booty, and are good at
it.
The team this year said goodbye to seven special
people. Six seniors graduated, four of which have been
on the team all four years, and a great coach.
Jill Hostetler was the creator and instructor of the
dance team. Without her, the halftime at a basketball
game may have not ever seen any dancers.
In the end, patience, dedication, hardwork, determination,
and a little talent help shape the seasoned dancers of
yesterday and inexperienced of tomorrow.
The baseball team started the year with a new coach, Coach Brad Roweton.
The season began in the Buffalo Tournament with a win. They started the season
on top with the first few games as wins. Through the year there were ups and
downs. However, they had a big win against Nixa, a state ranked team. The varsity
team ended the regular season with a record of 13W-12L. The junior varsity team
did good in this years season and the freshman team had its share of the wins.
Over all the season has been pretty good. Baseball adds to the list of sports with a
winning record this year. Good job guys and thanks Coach Roweton.
were awarded all district honors, making them qualified for state
The Track season was a successful one for the Bison this season. Startiing out with
approximately 30 people, the young runners were encouraged to step up and get the job
done. Led by senior leadership from Chris Hatten, Luke Charlton, Dustin Lunceford,
Michael Kelley, and Andy Perkins, the underclassmen had someone to follow. Lunceford
didn't step down from the challenge, instead he broke the 200 meter dash school record
that had been held since the early 1980's. The Bison track team stayed away from the
injury bug this year. There have only been a few minor injuries to hasten progress. Sam
Hitchcock, Bobbie Heard, Jason Burchell, and Joli Ahart all have earned points and are
expected to be the backbone of the team next year. Several members will have the
chance to make it onto Sectionals at Ozark, with a possible berth in the State track meet.
