II. Course Core Curriculum

Course Description (Slight introduction):

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: identify the types of structures (beams, frames, arches,
trusses) and describe their behavior; determine, according to the codes, different design loads to be considered in
the design of structures; calculate the support reactions and internal forces and draw diagrams of these efforts for
statically indeterminate structures; calculate the rotations and displacements suffered by the structures; factor in
loads and load combinations, and design according to the National Building Codes. The course also examines
calculation of complex truss arches and frames. Calculation of deflections by the Energy methods and virtual
work method. Influence lines; and calculation of indeterminate structures (beams, trusses and frames) using the
three moments (Clapeyron) method.
Description of Delivery Mode:
Teaching method lectures and problem solving, class discussions, homework.
Design activities (if exists):
Case study for a multi-storey structural analysis, applied and using a structural software analysis
(i.e. Autodesk Structural Robot)
Course Timetable  per Session  per Week
