CHAPTER Igovernment will provide and help the institution.

As the government
acknowledge the presence of these people, they would support the organization,
allot funds that will provide the basic needs of the physically challenged
Individual.
To the Future Researcher - It would be a great opportunity to all researchers with
the same topic for it would be useful as future references. The gathered data will
help as a guide for future research. Moreover, this will be one of the basis and
foundation in measuring coping strategies and self-esteem of physically challenged
individuals.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
For better understanding and clarification of this study, the following
terminologies were defined operationally and conceptually by the researchers. The
following are the definitions:

Acceptance. It refers to accepting life on life�s terms and not resisting what you
cannot or choose not to change.

Active coping. This are either behavioral or psychological responses designed to


change the nature of the stressor itself or how one thinks about it.

Behavioral disengagement. This means giving up, or withdrawing effort from, and the
attempt to attain the goal with which the stressor is interfering.

Coping Strategies. It refers to the specific efforts, both behavioral and


psychological, that people employ to master, tolerate, reduce, or minimize
stressful events.

Denial. It is an attempt to reject the reality of the stressful event.

Emotion-focused coping strategies. This involve efforts to regulate the emotional


consequences of stressful or potentially stressful events.

Humor. It is used as a positive coping strategy to feel a sense of control over a


more powerless situation and used as way to temporarily escape a feeling of
helplessness by making jokes or fun about the situation.

Physically Challenged Individual. It refers to the person with limitation in


functioning for a particular action in their everyday life. They may have
difficulty with movement or self-care. It often causes a person to use special
equipment like wheelchair, cane or prosthetic limb. Physical disabilities may
result from permanent injuries to the brain, spinal cord, eyes and other parts of
the body.

Planning. It is defined as thinking about how to confront the stressor.

Problem-solving strategies. Is the way people use in efforts to do something active


to alleviate stressful circumstances.

Positive Reframing. This means trying to reconsider things in a positive light, and
it is a powerful way to transform your thinking, making the best of the situation
by growing from it or viewing it in a more favorable light.

Religious coping. This refers to the increased engagement in religious activities


as a way of coping with stressful events.

Self-blame. It means that the attribution that the consequences one experiences are
a direct result of one�s action or character.
Self-distraction. This refers to a passive coping strategy in that the person copes
without directly confronting the situation or trying to solve the problem.

Self-esteem. It is used to describe a person's overall sense of self-worth or


personal value.

Self-Destruction. It is defined as any behaviors that negatively impact the mind or


body of oneself by the life choices one make.

Substance use. It usually cause the person�s turning to the use of alcohol and
other drugs as a way of disengaging from the stressor.

Use of emotional social support. The focus of this coping mechanism is getting
sympathy or emotional support from someone.

Use of instrumental social support. This coping mechanism refers to seeking of


assistance, information, or advice of what to do from someone.

Venting of emotions. This refers to the increased awareness of one's emotional


distress, and a concomitant tendency to ventilate or discharge those feelings.
