Fashion illustration through Computer-aided design (CAD) also known as computer-aided

design and drafting (CADD) simply means the use of computer technology for the process
of design and design-documentation. Describe three (03) benefits of having computer aided
software for the fashion illustration. Use proper images or sketchers if necessary to prove
your ideas.

Use of computer technology to aid in the design and particularly the drafting of a part or product,
including entire garments are known as CAD. It is both visual and drawing and symbol-based
method of communication whose conventions are particular to a specific technical field.

Create fashion illustrations and fabric print designs

The textile industry generates a massive amount of material work and repetitive designs which
require extremely high more time to complete entire design. Such tasks can perform using CAD
with ease and allow the designer to do research and create new ideas. CAD can replace the most
repetitive task in the design process. Generally CAD systems have tools for producing colour
separations automatically, which had to be painted by hand in earlier process. Colours can be
changed and pattern repeats produced. Areas can be filled in with colour or pattern details at the
click of a mouse.

Design clothing as flats/ working drawings

A flat is a technical illustration of a garment. It's used in the fashion industry to present all the
information about a garment. One time, they were drawn by hand. Drawing them on the
computer is now the industry standard. Computers allow designers to graphically test ideas in
real time without having to create real prototypes. To be competitive in the fashion industry,
drawing flats in Adobe Illustrator has become a necessary key skill. Flats can also be filled with
color to be used in a line sheet, or they can be fully rendered with fabric to show the look of the
final garment.
Create specification/ technical sheets for samples and production

Specification sheets, also known as spec sheets, are among the most important documents when
it comes to the technical characteristic of designing and producing. Once the initial design is
completed, a technical flat sketch has to be created. This can be done manually (by hand), on the
computer using Adobe Illustrator or any other design program, or using a Computer Aided-
Design System.

Computer-Aided Design Systems help with the design process. Initially, a design idea may start
with a sketch, which then may grow into a flat color drawing of the garment. For production and
selling purposes, CAD systems take the garment that you designed and turn it into a 2D flat,
technical image. These images make it easier to understand the garment from a production and
selling feature. When in the process of producing the garment, the picture helps the manufacturer
to see exactly how the garment is to look upon completion. From a buyer’s point of view, a CAD
image gives them a clear idea of what they are thinking to purchase, and these images are usually
put onto the line sheet.

The basic information that MUST be on a spec sheet, besides the measurements, would include:

 Garment name:
 Style Number:
 Date:
 Season:
 Revisions: (if any)
 Fabrication:
 Trimmings:
 Accessories:
 Description:
 Label:
 Flat sketch, front and back:
 Fabric swatch: -
2. Graphics software works with images either as ‘Vectors’ or ‘Bitmaps’. Drawing packages, such as
Illustrator, CorelDraw, and Freehand create ‘Vector’ images which are images created using smooth
lines and curves.Describe three (03) characteristics of Vector images.

1. Vector images created by mathematical formula which forms smooth lines and curves which
are free of rsolution. Vector Formulas. A vector image is an object that has both a magnitude and
a direction. In Geometrically, we can image a vector as a directed line segment.

2. They can dro excellent quality ine drawings, such as specification drawings and logos. Vector
images can illustrate fine segments of image rather than bitmap.
3. A large dimension vector image retains a small file size.

3. Develop two (02) fabric surface designs for a ladies pant using Kalido StyleTM software.
Present two hand illustrations and two illustrations developed with Kalido Style TM following
steps given below. (40 marks)
Step 01: Develop two (02) hand illustrations of the fabric designs including colours and
textures. Decided the width of the fabric. If it is block printing, you can show with several
repetitions. If it is embroidery, batik or sublimation printing, you can show effective part of the
design. Give design description to each design.

01. Fabric width: 45 inches

Design Direction: Diagonal one way direction
Fabric type: Linen

02. Fabric width : 45 inches

Design direction : length wise bottom
Fabric type: silk

Step 02: Develop two (02) computer illustrations, representing the same designs that you draw
with hand illustrations in step 01, using Kalido StyleTM.
