(Sample exercise -4)

Exercise Title Familiarization-4 at operational level
Task Follow safe working practices when preparing machinery units
and associated systems for startup and operation
Function and Level Marine engineering at the operational level
Competence Operate main and auxiliary machinery and associated control
systems
Requirements (K.U.P) Preparation, operation, fault detection and necessary measures
to prevent damages for the following machinery items and control
systems
Estimated Duration 2 hour
Outline of Training The trainees perform operations such as opening and closing
valves, starting and stopping pumps and etc. for preparing
operation of the propulsion plant following the instruction
Initial Condition Cold ship
Specific Purpose The training allows the trainees to:
- Understand safe procedures to open and close valves, start
and stop pumps and other safe operational procedures when
preparing machinery units and associated systems for
startup and operation
Briefing Explain briefly the following
- functions and types of valves and precautions when opening
and closing the valves (SW/FW water valves, FO/ LO valves,
Steam valves, High pressure valves and etc.)
- principles to be applied to pumps according to pump types
when starting and stopping pumps
- precautions when admitting steam into a steam system
- precautions when firing oil-fired boiler
- precautions when filling oil tanks
- precautions when keeping bilge clear
Implementation Start the simulation and let the trainees:
- perform operations such as opening and closing valves,
starting and stopping pumps following the instructions that
instruct installations and machinery to be operated / run
and precautions as follow
- establish sea water circulation system
- fresh water circulation system
- transfer fuel oil from bunker tanks to FO settling tank
- perform firing up oil fired boiler following the instructions
- admit steam into steam system with care and establish the
steam supply system including drain and condensate lines
- transfer bilge from bilge wells to bilge tank
Debriefing Explain briefly the following
- various types and sizes of valves are used in actual ships and
operating precautions depending on the types and sizes are
also necessary although they cannot be discerned on the
illustrating panel or mimic panel
- summary on the performance
