Symphony Kitchens

Installation Manual
Introduction

The Symphony Group PLC

Symphony is one of Europe’s largest suppliers of fitted furniture for the home. That is because of the
sheer quality of its products – and because it is probably the most responsive company in its field to
developments in popular fashion and changing perceptions of good taste.
The Group’s management efficiency is recognised in its BS EN ISO 9002 acceditation and its concern for
environmental standards by the award of BS EN ISO 14001. An equally important endorsement in the eyes
of its trading partners is prudent management which creates an enviable financial stability and so allows it
to honour its commitment to total customer service and unsurpassed value for money.

The Symphony Range

The Symphony range of fitted kitchens has universal appeal. Distributors can stock with confidence
because they can be sure that what they sell is constructed to the highest international standards to
give many years of efficient service. And because the range is so extensive they find it easy to offer their
customers a rich choice of design options to satisfy national, regional and social preferences.
Frontals may be plain or feature finely detailed carving. Materials range from the most modern to the
most traditional…and where wood is an option, it is offered in today’s popular timbers such as beech or
pear as well as in the enduringly appealing oak. Colours, of course, may be restrained or exuberant. Your
customers will find that choosing a Symphony kitchen is part of the joy of owning one.

The Definitive Guide to Symphony Service

This guide to Symphony Kitchens has been devised to show you exactly how each individual kitchen looks,
how it is assembled and how each component is identified. It will show you exactly how to specify so that
your design will be correctly interpreted and the price accurately calculated. You will have, at your
fingertips, every neccessary item of product knowledge. In preparing it, we have aimed to create the virtual
reality of every element that makes a Symphony kitchen so desirable.

Installation
Symphony reccomends that all installation work should be undertaken by a competent fitter or joiner.
All electrical fitting must be undertaken by a qualified electrician.

Handings
In the construction procedures detailed in this manual the units and components are described as left or
right handed. The handing of a particular component or unit must be determined by looking at the unit
from the front:
• The side of the hinge on single units (e.g. left hand hinged)
• The side of the blanked end of corner units (e.g. left hand blanked)
• The position of the drainer on sink units (e.g. left hand drainer)
• The end position of a base wing end unit (e.g. left hand end)
• The side of a dummy drawer on a double base unit (e.g. left hand side)

Care & Protection

The following care and protection guidelines must be followed to ensure the surfaces are maintained in a
good condition:
• It is important that you treat all frontals, particularly timbers, with care, in order that they maintain their
good looks and performance.
• If scratches occur, an application of furniture polish or wax will repair the damage.
• Do not allow water to stand on timber surfaces. Always wipe off immediately.
• Never use abrasive cleaners or strong chemicals on any of the surfaces.
• Clean melamine and laminates with a damp cloth, warm water and a mild detergent.

Cabinet/Frontal Surface Consistency

Timbers and veneers are natural materials and are subject to the variations in colours and grain differences
that nature promotes. All timbers, particularly pine, feature small graining marks and knots. These are part
of the timber’s natural properties and do not represent faults in the door or drawer.
Melamine and laminates are synthetic materials, therefore it is virtually impossible to guarantee a
totally accurate match between timber/timber veneered frontals and accessories. Notwithstanding the
difficulties involved, Symphony endeavours wherever possible to produce the closest match that
manufacturing and finished technology allow. Timbers also mellow over time, but as the cabinet material
does not, this could cause some longer term colour discrepancy.

Timber Characteristics
As a natural material, wood reflects the endless variety of grains and textures found in nature and such
variances must be expected. All timbers mellow when exposed to sunlight, so a colour change is possible.
Whilst such definitive characteristics make them a perfect vehicle for furniture design, it is important that
they are treated with care, and eliminate the risk of contact with sharp or heavy objects, scratching, expo-
sure to chemicals etc., must be avoided before, during and after installation.

Planning General Information

Linden is chiefly remarkable for being soft yet compact, with a fine uniform texture. Whilst, like every

1.02
Symphony timber frontal, it is coated with a hard, durable lacquer, care must still be taken not to hit,
scratch or scuff the timber before, during or after installation.
Oak, particularly European oak, is a finely grained, matured timber, notable mainly for its stability and
straight graining. It is one of the furniture industry’s favourite timbers, and can be used in a variety of styles
and stained to a range of colours. It is traditionally the craftsman’s ideal timber to work with. It will
however mellow with age, and a change in colour is possible.
Maple is a straight grained timber which is hard, and light in weight. The finished surface is matt before
lacquering, and growth rings are comparatively indistinct. In a kitchen situation, it responds well to regular
cleaning with colour free furniture polish or wax.
Birch occurs largely in northern and eastern Europe. It is devoid of any conspicuous structural features, but
gains its character from random, almost circular graining. In its raw state it has a smooth, light and bright
surface, easily replicated in its finished format with the application of a durable semi-matt lacquer, and
buffed to a sheen.
Walnut is a moderately hard timber with good shock resistant properties. Grain patterns will vary from
plain to highly refined. The wood finishes beautifully with outstanding grain colour and pattern.

Delivery & Storage On Site

Always:
• Store units, worktops and other items under cover, in dry conditions, immediately.
• Store loose shelves separate from units.
• Protect unit fronts.
• Cover units during storage to prevent dirt and debris collecting on moving parts such as drawer runners
and hinges.
• Avoid twisting and distortion.
• Store worktops upright or flat, face to face on bearers with the top surface protected against damage.
Never:
• Store units on their sides unless they have soft, grit-free material underneath.
• Stack base units more than three high.
• Stack wall units more than four high.
• Stack frontals against each other or against the a wall.
• Store units, worktops or other items near direct heat.
• Remove tapes from doors or drawers until immediately before installation.
Customers must check units as they are delivered and sign for them as being in good condition. If they are
not, the driver’s copy of the advice note must be marked accordingly and signed by the customer.
