Separation Process
1. 9500 L/min of a gas mixture containing 17% NH3, 83% Air by mole shall be treated in a
packed absorber using ceramic Raschig rings. 90% of the ammonia is to be absorbed
using a water rate 1.5 times the minimum.
Gas (air flow) upward of 4000 at 20oC and 755 mmHg pressure
Inlet gaseous concentration of 6000 ppm NH3 (dry basis) Yin=0.006
Inlet water concentration of 0.0006 mole fraction NH3 in water xin=0.0006
Water flow rate= 500
Gaseous flow rate= 500
Assume emission standard is 1000 ppm NH3 so yout=0.001

Chemical Reaction Kinetics

2. The rate of the colony disappearance is proportional to the amount of poison and current
microorganism population with an aspect ratio k1. The poison formation rate is
proportional to the number of microorganisms (with a ratio k2). Suppose the initial
colony size equals N0, and the amount of poison Z is 0 at the beginning. One is required
to make the corresponding set of differential equations and solve it numerically, and
present graphically the microorganisms population trends along with the amount of
poison in the system. Assume k=0,1; k1=0,0001; k2=0,01, N0=2000.

Transport Phenomena
3. A vertical condenser composed of ¾” (Do=0.75” Di=0.62” and x=0.605”;K=250 W/mK)
and 1” 16 BWG copper tubes will handle chlorobenzene vapor condensing at 1 atm.
Assume water as the cooling medium at an average temperature of 80oC and heat transfer
coefficient of 2270 W/m2-K. Assuming film type condensation, what is the mass rate of
chlorobenzene if the exchanger is 1.5 m long?

Momentum Transfer
4. Solid particles having a size of 0.12 mm, a shape factor 𝜙𝑠 of 0.88, and a density of 1000
kg/m3 are to be fluidized using air at 2.0 atm abs and 25C. The voidage at minimum
fluidizing conditions is 0.42. Calculate the pressure drop at minimum fluidizing
conditions, and minimum velocity for fluidizing conditions.

Heat and Mass Transfer

5. 160 m3/min of air at 1 atm and 15 oC will be heated to 45oC by passing it normally
through a bank of vertical tubes that are 1.5 m long. Each bank is 6 rows wide and 4 rows
deep and the casing is 39 cm wide. Outside tube diameter is 3 cm and a triangular pitch
of twice the outside diameter is used. Steam at 225oC flows inside the tubes. Assume no
leakage. How many banks of tubes are needed? Assume FT=1
