MBA and PhD Careers

If you're studying for or have recently obtained an MBA or PhD degree, Shell has a whole host of

opportunities open to you. You could be looking to get a taste of the Shell business, or you might want to

apply the skills you gained in your degree to take on the challenges of a global organization. Either way,

your personal development will always be of the utmost importance to us.

As an MBA graduate you could take an accelerated career path that puts you in line for a role as one of Shell's future

leaders. Your ability to inspire and motivate, look at problems differently and provide imaginative solutions is more

important than your background and experiences.

And as a high-performing MBA with broad international commercial experience, you'll have the opportunity to take on

and solve some of the world's greatest challenges.

Why Join Shell as an MBA?

The demand for energy is growing faster than at any time in history, and the challenge of securing the future of the

world's energy supplies has never been tougher.

projects that encourage you to use your knowledge and skills in original and imaginative ways.

Your leadership skills, project management experience and international exposure are important to us, as is your ability

Candidates for these "fast track" positions should be pursuing their MBA in a full-time program and have 5-10 years of

full-time work experience between finishing their undergraduate degree and starting their MBA. Internships do not

qualify as work experience. Part-time, online, or night MBA programs are not considered.

Successful candidates will have the ability to take calculated risks for the betterment of an organization. Candidates

should also be able to demonstrate a broad commercial mindset, strong leadership skills, and have analytical and

implementation experience.

Some experiences that we look for (but are not limited too):

There are two routes MBA graduates can take into Shell. An MBA Recruitment Day features case studies and

presentations, and will help you to discover how you'll cope in different business scenarios while assessing your potential

for leadership.

Alternatively, you might prefer to apply for an Internship. This will give you first-hand experience of Shell as an

employer, and exposure to a range of real-life business projects.

Building valuable experience, skills and knowledge, you'll benefit from detailed feedback, get to see what the energy

industry is like from the inside, and be fully assessed during your time with us.

Shell offers a wide range of varied and challenging roles, and if you join us as an MBA graduate, you could be placed in

one of six locations:

Florence Okoli, MBA, Harvard Business School,

Commercial Lead, Domestic Gas, Nigeria

"Shell does empower its employees to huge positions of responsibilities and is ahead of most of its

competitors in ensuring that MBAs are placed in the right jobs."

Why did you choose Shell over other MBA employers?

Shell recognised the value of my MBA – this is unusual in the oil and gas industry, which tends to focus more on technical

roles. They also have a well-defined process for the recruitment and proper placement of MBAs, ensuring they’re placed

in roles that use the skills they bring to the table.

What does your job involve as an MBA graduate?

I’m responsible for the commercial aspects of Nigeria’s domestic gas supply project. This has huge implications for the

industry given the government's domestic gas agenda and its importance as a tool for economic growth and

development.

How has your MBA helped you in your role?

It’s enabled me to bring strategic insights to the crafting of a solution that supports the government's aspirations while

ensuring that Shell's own aspirations are achieved. I’m also able to think laterally and apply a broader mindset that

works towards a solution that respects the perspectives of all the parties involved.

What kind of support have you had to achieve your career ambitions?

I’m proud to be involved in Shell’s domestic gas project and play my part towards ensuring the establishment of a

framework that supports this goal. I’ve been on the Experienced Negotiation Development Programme, which is

extremely helpful in negotiations with the government and other players in the industry.

Which aspect of the training have you found most useful?

The 3-D approach to negotiations. I had a course during my MBA on this specific framework which used case studies

from different situations. The training at Shell built on this knowledge and went a step further to apply the concepts to

real-life situations, stressing the importance of the deal set-up and creating a favourable result.

What kind of qualities do you think an MBA graduate needs in order to do well here?

This is a conservative industry and requires vision, fresh insights and an ability to think out of the box to address the

huge challenges we’re facing. However, you also need the courage to introduce change and challenge the conservative

attitude to ensure the right ideas are carried forward.

What’s the best thing about working for Shell?

The people, the training and the opportunities to excel. Shell does empower its employees to huge positions of

responsibilities and is ahead of most of its competitors in ensuring that MBAs are placed in the right jobs.
