At the same time, some governments have pushed through significant tax increases
under the guise of “green fees” or “eco fees.” In Ontario, for example, on the same day
that the province hit residents with the new harmonized sales tax (HST), Stewardship
Ontario added an “eco fee” to numerous items. This money is supposed to go towards
the collection and recycling of those products, but it’s not at all clear how this is going
to occur as there are no recycling programs for many items. “It’s not a tax,” the
government says to flabbergasted taxpayers. Likewise, Ontario residents saw their hydro
rates jump about 25 percent under the guise of time-of-use billing, also marketed as a
green initiative.
So green is getting a bad rap! This means, for HVAC/R and plumbing contractors,
that many customers won’t take it on faith that a particular product is good for the
environment, saves energy, reduces water use, etc. They may be a little leery of a green

of that green cash as possible.

designed for water flows that limit temperatures (rise or

A ground loop or well with anywhere from 500 to 3000
