PROCEDURE FOR DP ACTIVITY

POWER MECH SEPCO BVIL/DCPL

POWER MECH PROJECTS LTD
BALCO 1200MW C.P.P.
ULTRASONIC TEST PROCEDURE

0.1 SCOPE
This general Ultrasonic procedure in association with specific UT procedure attachments is
intended to be descriptive of all ultrasonic examination that will be carried out by UT
personnel ASME Sec VIII are the controlling document.

This procedure with attachments is designed to comply with the recommendations of ASME
Sec V & Sec VIII.
All ultrasonic examination will be pulse echo method using direct contact method. Through
transmission or pitch –catch techniques will not be within the scope of this procedure.
Electronic alarms or gate system & suppression will not be utilised.

1.0 QUALIFICATION OF PERSONNEL

1.1 The person shall be qualified as per SNT-TC-1A.

1.2 As a minimum all personnel conducting UT examination shall be certified to Level II.
1.3 All qualification certification shall be valid.

2.0 EQUIPMENT & ACCESSORIES

Ultrasonic instrumwill be a scan flaw detectors & shall meet the requirements of t530 of
Article 5 of ASME Sec-V. Each technician will perform instrument & transducer checks.
This will include, but will not be limited to screen height linearity, amplitude control linearity
& beam spread as given in sce V., Horizontal linearity, index point, beam angle &
resolution.
Calibration Record will be maintained for reference.

3.0 SURFACE PREPARATION

The surface from which scanning to be achieved, should be cleared to remove all scale, weld
spatter, loose particles or any other deleterious foreign material to assure continuous coupling
during the test.

4.0 BASE METAL EXAMINATION

The V1 & V2 blocks will be utilised for calibration prior to parent metal examination. The
adjoining base material evaluation shall be accomplished by positioning the search unit on
the primary scanning surfsce of the adjoining members by straight beam.

5.0 TIME BASE CALIBRATION

The CRT will be calibrated for range using V1 & V2 metric calibration block prior to start
of each working shift & at the end of mid shift break, in the relationship of time vs distance
travelled (beam path length) Range values represented across the time base shall be as
identified in the appropriate specific UT procedure attachments.

6.0 DISTANCE AMPLITUDE CORRECTION

7.1 DAC Curves shall be made for each variationin combination of normal angle of refraction &
frequency or when charging to probe of different manufacturer or series. The basic
calibration block (T 542.2 Art 5 ASME Sec V) will be used for DAC Construction.
7.2 PROCEDURE
DAC curve will be constructed as follows.
7.1)Place the probe on the calibration block to obtain a reflection from the required hole
which produces the greatest response.
7.2)Maximise the indication by manipulation & adjust to approximately 80% screen height
using the calibrated gain control. Make a mark on the CRT at the peak of of this indication
with an indelible fine tipped marker.
7.3)Repeat step(8.2) with out disturbing the gain control, using reflection from every
required reflector with in the beam path length of the test range to be useg.
7.4) Connect all points marked with a smooth curving line. This line will be referred to as the
DAC Curve for the particular search unit & range used.

8) REFERENCE LEVEL & SENSITIVITY SETTING FOR WELD TESTING

8.1) Reference level

(Disregard level ) shall be that level whereby reflectors at, or in excess of the level, will be
investigated to the extent that the operator can determine the shape, identity & location of all
such discontinuities & evaluate them in terms of the acceptance criteria for the purpose of
this procedure the reference level shall be 20% of DAC.

8.2) Reference reflactor

Reference reflector to obtain the standard sensitivity setting for weldment assessed to
ASME Sec VIII will be as per basic calibration block Fig T542.2.1 article 5 ASME Sec
V(Exhibit 3).
The basic calibration block shall be of the same product from & material specification or
equivalent as that of material being examined.
The basic calibration block shall be curved for material diameter 20 inches or vless. A single
curved basic calibration block may be used to calibrate in the range of curvature from 0.9 to
1.5 times the basic calibration block diameter. The curvature range from 0.94 inch to 20
inch diameter requires 6 block curvatures as indicated in Fig T 542.3.5 Article 5 ASME Sec
V for any thickness range (Exhibit 4).
The finish on the surfaces of the block shall be representative of the surface finishes on the
components.
If it is not possible to have a block of similar finish, then other blocks may be used provided
transfer correction value is added as given in Sec 9.0 of this procedure.
