ENHS HERALDS THE BEST OF TIMES


It all started with a dream---from a dream of reality and from reality to success. The dream of establishing a school envisioned by a
brainy District Supervisor, Victorino D. Fontanilla became a reality when it turned out to be public school which constantly reaped remarkable
achievements from school year 1975-1976 onwards. It started as a Municipal High School established in 1975 with 5 pre-fab classrooms borrowed
from the elementary allocation. It was changed to Esperanza National High School in the year 1990 by virtue of the Nationalization Law.
And now, the school consists of 66 buildings with a total of 106 classrooms, 41 offices, 237 teachers and an enormous amount of 5778 enrolees.

ENHS takes pride in its fast progress from the time of Mr. Ananias Daraug who started the procurement of the very first buildings
of the school. ENHS never ceases to grow by the time of Mr. Placido Peñaredondo where Bagong Lipunan building (now the library)
and two-storey USAID grant ESF Building in 1992 were constructed and the prestigious school paper "The Reflector", which annually
bags awards in Press Conferences, has come to life through its first moderator, Mrs. Mansueta Jandonero. The next administrator, Mrs. Bernardita
R. Bito-onon, initiated the construction of the first small stage. She was succeeded by the Most Outstanding Principal (2011), Mr. Roberto S.
Leyza who made ENHS zoom to great success after becoming a Hall of Famer Awardee for Brigada Eskwela in 2009 and Most Effective
Secondary School in the Region. This was the moment when ENHS heralded the best of times. The school has remarkably emerged to excellence
specially when Mrs. Rosalia Estrellan managed to acquire the two-storey building of 8 classrooms and another 3-storey building of 12 classrooms.

Esperanza National High School, a melting pot of many cultures such as Ilonggo, Maguindanaoan, Tedurav, Ilokano and many more,
is the center of academic excellence and co-curricular development producing competitive, dynamic and productive individuals through well-
equipped, competent, dedicated and committed educators. ENHS is a school with multi-curricular offerings. With the Science, Technology and
Engineering (STE) curriculum, students can become academically exceptional, research-oriented and computer literate. Through Special
Program in the Arts (SPA), the talents and skills of students are developed through dancing, singing, drawing, performing theaters and
manipulating multimedia. Students who have good interpersonal, technical and vocational skills can take the Basic Education Curriculum
(BEC). Learning another language became part of the school when it implemented Special Program in Foreign Language (SPFL). And for
those who cannot take the basic education, the Alternative Learning System (ALS) which strengthens the literacy of individuals whose
school age has already passed by is also offered by ENHS. And now, with the Inclusive Education embarking into the learning system of the
Department of Education, the school opened Special Education (SPED) for students with special needs and exceptionalities.

What makes ENHS stand out among any other schools in the Region is the fact that it is the Home of the Champions tracing back to
its unfathomable victories in 2006 when the school paper became the Best School Paper Awardee in Aklan (National Level). "The Reflector"
won another national award for Best School Paper in Baguio City, 2007. ENHS also won national champion in Jingle Writing and Presentation,
English Festival, Olonggapo City, year 2010. Aside from that, the school also went International level when selected students represented in
Malaysia for International Engineering Invention and Exhibits in Research.
More feathers have been added on our cap year after year and a great number of regional champion titles, division champions and
other prestigious awards in different categories contributed to the limelight of success. The school had painstakingly established and sustained
programs and thrusts which gained creditable performances. It is a home of co-curricular activities, one which is the popular Hinabyog Festival
Dance Troupe, ENHS Drum and Bugle Corps and the Kalimudan Beauties and Brains.

A long list of highlights of awards and achievements included Regional Awards in Chess, Damath, Investigatory Projects, Food
Preservation, Residential Writing, BLC Convention Individual Quiz, Reading Aloud, Talent, Orations, Talumpati, Tagisan ng Talino, Spreadsheet
Making, Homepage Development, Desktop Publishing and other skills competition which sharpened learners innate capabilities.

At present, with the effective and efficient leadership of Dr. Eskak M. Delna, CES, Principal IV, who was awarded as Most Outstanding
Principal of the Region in year 2012 and 2016, ENHS does not waver when presented with educational changes and challenges. Instead,
it experienced an amazing culture of excellence. He started with discipline and personal and core values. And so today, with more buildings
constructed and the gym widened and completed, the present leader smiles with contentment and pride, as he takes an overview of buildings
depicting collaboration and mutual support from stakeholders. He likewise has set up a pool of capable and talented teachers who will propel
development at ENHS as an OASIS of a greatly advanced wisdom and learning. A strategic framework served as a unifying agent and it includes
home visitations for students at risk of dropping out (SARDO), modular programs for students who cannot afford to come to school, reading
programs for selected incoming grade 7 students.

ENHS BRIGADA ESKWELA HISTORY

The Brigada Eskwela is a proof that an effective partnership between the government and citizens is possible. Its effects on the School,
which includes the more improved perspective of an institution, from its physical attributes to internal aspects, depict collaboration and mutual
support from stakeholders.

The country’s forefathers who penned the 1987 constitution strongly understood this fundamental need that they wrote Article II
Section 17 on the pages of the highest law of the land – clear proof of the Filipino people’s belief that education is indispensable to the
growth of a nation. The Department of Education (DepEd) is married to the burden of fulfilling this commitment. Throughout the years,
it has devised countless ways to deliver quality education to every Filipino.

“The State shall give priority to education, science and technology, arts, culture, and sports to foster patriotism and Nationalism,
accelerate social progress, and promote total human liberation and development.”
(Article II Section 17, 1987 Constitution)

But like any other government agency with flaws and shortcomings, the DepEd is not always met with favourable feedback. Most
common among the issues thrown at them is the seeming lack of priority for education in the country, as reflected in the deficiency of resources
for public schools. Year after year, we hear news about the shortage of classrooms, overcrowded classes, and schools being not ready for the
upcoming school year.

DepEd addressed this issue through the Adopt-a-School Program (ASP) in 1998. This initiative allowed a partnership with other
stakeholders who are willing to share resources to improve the country’s public school education.

In order to reach even more people, DepEd brought the program to the communities in 2003 through Brigada Eskwela.

A brand new outlook

Brigada Eskwela also known as the ‘Bayanihan Para sa Paaralan (Working together for Schools)”, added a new meaning to the
Filipino concept of unity. From the image of barrio men bearing together the weight of a nipa hut on their shoulders to the image of volunteers
braving storms and floods to help calamity-stricken communities Brigada Eskwela brings to us a picture of people from different sectors of
society repainting walls, cleaning windows and doors, or repairing fences.

It was a challenge for both public school teachers and students to put up blackboards with that have become rough to write on, chairs
with broken armrests or uneven legs, and electric fans that do not work.
As its name suggests, Brigada Eskwela assembles an army of volunteers to repair and prepare classrooms in time for the
opening of classes. The success of its implementation lies in the collaborative effort of school heads, private partners, local government
units, and the community members including parents and students.

Through the initiative of the school heads, private partners are given the opportunity to contribute resources for the effort.
Local Government Units and community members mostly provide manpower and volunteer services during this week-long activity.
Partners from private companies not only donate cash and resources to the cause. Some of them also send their employees to schools
to help. Representatives from religious groups and members of Local Government Units (LGU) such as police men, Philippine Army,
and cafgu also take part in the pruning of trees, painting school fences, and cleaning of drainages. Parents, barangay officials, students
and officials from different organizations also offer their help.

Throughout the years, the spirit of volunteerism in Brigada Eskwela has reached more people in the communities. More and more
people from different sectors of the society extend help to our school every year.

Repairs and replacements

For 12 years now, Brigada Eskwela has been transforming public schools into a venue where people from the community get the
chance to be directly involved in an endeavour with the government.

People from the surrounding barangays who spare their time to volunteer or donate money and resources get the rare opportunity
of collaborating with teachers and the members of the LGUs. Seeing them work together paint a picture of shared goals and
responsibilities between the school and the community it serves.

Critics of the program often say that local governments should be the one to fund the maintenance of public schools, and schools
should not have to generate resources from private companies or individuals.The DepEd explains that one of Brigada Eskwela’s goals is to
foster understanding among all sectors of society that the education of the Filipino people is the responsibility of everyone. The government
which provides free education for the Filipino youth, community where they grow, and the private sectors who will eventually employ them
are all stakeholders of education. Their cooperation is significant to the success of every student’s education.

Not many of us realize our role as partners of the government in creating positive change in society. More often than not, we are
quick to point out the diseases of our country, yet we only wait for the government to act on them. We either fail to recognize the opportunities
we have to contribute to the cure of this diseases, or we turn a blind eye on them because taking part involves many changes that may
inconvenience us.

Brigada Eskwela forces us to evaluate our willingness as members of the community to serve when we are called for. With the
opportunity it provides us – to be a part of the solution to the challenges of the education system in the country - we realize how we
see ourselves and our duty to the community and the country in general.

It allows us to understand that, if we are willing, we can become a part of the change we want to see.
Improved Perspectives

Brigada Eskwela was borne out of the need to address the challenges of public school education in the Philippines. It started
with the simple mission of cleaning up and beautifying public schools to prepare for the opening of classes. But by allowing
everyone to contribute, big or small, to this worthy endeavour, it has also opened multiple doors for learning and reflection.

Through adhering to this program by the DepEd, Esperanza National High School zoomed to a great success after becoming a Hall
of Famer awardee for Brigada Eskwela in 2009 and Most Effective Secondary School in the Region. This was the moment when ENHS
heralded the best of times. The school remarkable emerged o excellence in the light of the two-storey building of 8 classrooms and
another 3-storey building of 12 classrooms.

It shows that volunteerism, generosity from fortunate individuals and collaboration among strangers are still abundant in our country
and that there are a lot of people who are willing to cooperate with the government’s worthwhile endeavours if given the chance.

The positive changes that it creates – both on the physical appearance of the schools and the outlook of the people that take part
in it – are sources of great pride for the DepEd family. The Brigada Eskwela is proof that an effective partnership between the government
and citizens is possible.
