Accelerated wearing out of piston and rider rings of NP

Recip Compressor 4HE/3

I'm writing to ask for your opinion. Our plant has a new NP reciprocating compressor,
4HE/3, installed in August last year. However, we have a problem with it, where
06/19/2007, accelerated wearing out of the piston and rider rings have occurred ever since it was
09:14:14 commissioned, more so with the 2nd and 3rd stage of the compressor. Because of this,
we have to shutdown the compressor every two to three months to replace the piston
Author Profile and rider rings. This accelerated wearing out brings another problem with it, in that the
eMail author dusts accumulate in the piping, and causing the 1st stage suction strainer to choke
Edit everytime recycle is done. This causes the compressor to be shut down once every ten
days.

Please find in the link below report from our recent overhaul. In the analysis section, you
will see what I'm talking about. In just one month, the piston ring thickness and the
piston/liner bottom clearance have decreased significantly.
NP advised changing the piston and rider rings to a new type of material, which we did
in this recent overhaul. We are monitoring its performance now. However, just want to
know whether you have any insight on why this happens and suggestions on how to
solve this problem.

Thank you

Regards,
Helmy

no edvidence of lubrication of the rings.

It's non-lubricated

What are the materials the rings, cylinders, pistons, rods, and bearings

Posted by: Kelly Bramble ® I don't see any information on the piston cylinder. What is the
roundness, surface roughness, and any surface finishes there?

During the overhaul, we only took the surface roughness of Cylinder 1 (3rd stage) and 3
(2nd stage) since they're the worst. Please see below:

Posted by: Kelly Bramble ® They are all bad from a friction/wear point of view. Another question I
have is are you doing anything on the cylinder and piston to harden the
06/21/2007, 17:58:10 surfaces? Like nitriding or other?
