Planning of Passive Optical Networks – GPON Planning

with NETW ORKS Trans

Passive Optical Networks represent a cost-efficient option of the FTTx technology for
providing broadband access. GPON markets are predicted to grow significantly.
GPON planning has become an important use case for the product NETW ORKS Trans.
Which planning tasks can be solved by the tool?
n Bandwidth categorization: Where are the subscribers located and which bandwidth
do they need?
n Duct network rollout: Based on detailed geographical information, which existing
ducts can be re-used and where should new ducts be built?
n Area definition: Which distribution and access areas have to be defined?
n Logical network structure: In which buildings should the OLTs and ONTs be located,
and which logical distribution and aggregation structure can be used between OLTs
and ONTs? Which cascaded bandwidth allocation is applied?
n Cable network rollout: Which physical drop, distribution and feeder cable structure
should be used? Where are the locations to splice fibers or to split the lightpath?
n Capacity and cost calculation: Which capacities are required for all network ele-
ments? How much does it cost?

The figure shows a planned cable and duct network structure on a geo-referenced back-
ground, which is essential for detailed planning. NETW ORKS Trans widely supports the
n Usage of Enhanced Geographic Maps
n Usage of Web Map Services
The prepared plannings can also be used for documentation purposes. It is possible to
n print out geograohic and schematic implementation plans
n fix the individual allocation of fibers by cascaded PON subsystems
n fix the individual allocation of ducts by fiber-optic cables

You can benefit from using NETW ORKS Trans for GPON planning by
n optimizing the structure of the access network and saving CAPEX
n reducing effort on maintaining data and checking their consistency
n improving quality of reports and printed plans for implementation
